Open thread: Championship Sunday 2014

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers

Today is Championship Sunday and there are two games which promise to rather entertaining for fans of defensive and offensive contests alike so here’s our quick takes.

Patriots at Broncos – This might be one of the last times that these two great quarterbacks meet in the AFC Championship and should make for an interesting matchup.  After being on the vanguard of the two tight end sets in years past, the Patriots have struggled to keep their talent healthy and on the field and so the Patriots have pivoted into a run-heavy team and it certainly worked for them against the Colts last week.  Today, however, it might get harder for the Patriots to run the ball.  Denver’s secondary is the weak link, so look for the Patriots inside receivers to feast on the Broncos.  While we all know Brady can be clutch in key late-game drives, the talent at Peyton Manning’s disposal on offense is unquestionably better … who will end up on top after 60 minutes?

Niners at Seahawks – Each team won the game in their own buildings so far this season, so can the Seahawks hold serve with The 12th Man in their corner?  The Niners could be called the hottest team in football over the last two months and that can’t be discounted but the Seahawks have won some ugly games (witness Saints Divisional game) regardless.  Both teams seem to be bunkering down and turning into much heavier run attacks of late, but this game will come down to which quarterback can beat his opponent’s secondary.  Navarro Bowman is leading the Niners defense and playing out of his mind.  Everyone wants to talk about Luke Kuechly this year, but Bowman is the player who actually is the embodiment of what many seem to project onto Kuechly.  Meanwhile, the Seahawks secondary has had Kaepernick’s number in the past … can the stout Seahawks secondary do it again tonight at home?

Here's ten to get you chomping...........

TEN REASONS THE JETS MUST FIRE REX RYAN NOW !!!!     (POSTED DECEMBER, 2013).

(And restore Respect to The Jets)

1) Poor Offensive Management skills!!

2) Poor Game/Time Out Management skills

3)) Allows favoritism to rule player decisions !!!

4) Defecient talent evaluator (see Ducasse, Wilson, Conner, Sanchez, Milliner, and others),

5) Poor ability to prepare a team ( See 4 out of 5 CRITICAL losess after the Bye Week)

6) NO team Discipline (Penalties, Consistently Poor Play execution)

7) Poor ability to Physically Condition a Team ( See team meltdowns after second half of seasons)

8) NO Credibility ( Continues to purposely build-up false talent and make promises not kept)

9) NO Character ( Constan visions, bluster, fluff and overall illuions of Grandieur, Guarantees, and Asurances of FAILED player/team efforts and perfoemances).

10) No sense of Direction, Identity, or Core Values with the Team.

Brendan, I failed to find where I posted the other three........will let you know later !!!

PS. I've tried posting these (As you requested) 3X in the last 24 hrs

I'm not that impressed with neither QB Wilson or Kaepaneck it looks  like there are  running backs that can throw a football.. I give them 4 years tops before there hurt and gone. I still believe more in the pocket passer who can scramble but throws. If peyton and the Broncos goes up 14 nothing i see a blowout. But if the weather is cold and nasty i give it to Seattle. This would of been a perfect SB for New England because their use to playing in the cold weather and I know Belacheat emotionally wanted to win at the Meadowlands... But tuff Im glad to see the Patsys eliminated.. And as for Boomer Esiason giving excuses for the pats not having their weapons. Shannon Sharpe shut him up by stating..  They got to the AFC game with this same team.....I think Brady is done.  It should be our time if we use our brains.and draft correctly

For those saying this is the end for the Pats, stop it. It is amazing that the Pats who lost many of their offensive weapons and had rookies starting, and also the defense decimated with injuries something fierce, that they went this far. Brady still has a few good years left and they will address the offense with a  couple vertical threats/TE, and the defense with some depth and a couple of acquisitions for the secondary. I have been hearing the Pats decline for years and almost every year they dominate the division. 2-3 years from now when Brady really starts slipping, maybe, but don't count on it before then. I still cant believe how far they went with losing many weapons on offense and 3 key starting defensive players.  Can you imagine if the Jets lost 3 main starting defensive players? Yikes! Unfortunately they will be the team to beat this season again. I think we will give them a real battle though this season, but to say they are in decline is wishful thinking. If they went this far with massive losses to their offense and defense, when they address them this offseason and with Brady and BB still at the helm, they will again be the team to beat. But I do agree we will greatly narrow the gap.

Richard Sherman makes a pass breakup that ends the game, on a pass that if completed would have won it for the Niners - then he gets interviewed like a minute later and people are offended how jacked up he is? Add in the fact that Crabtree was trash talking all game, Sherman's response was pretty expected IMO

I cant wait for the SB. This match-up is intriguing.  I just believe with the rules favoring the offense now days and all Peytons weapons, it will be hard to overcome by the Hawks defense. If this game was played back in the old days when the defense had much more freedom, I would go for the Hawks. Peyton will still have to have a very solid game to beat Hawks.  Would I bet on this game, no way.

Top of the morning.  I hope we saw the beginning of the end of Brady/Bellichek.  While Broncs played well, Pats stunk.  Warmed my heart.

Did any of you see Page Six today?  6'5'', 300lb, Nicky Mangold will spoof Kim Kardashian in Kanye's "Bound 2" video for a Pepsi commercial during the Grammys.  Wow.

That guy sherman is a real Jerk off he's good but he kinda of over do it Revis had more class than this guy But Sherman to me could be very good but his attitude is terrible

This will be one heck of  SB. The first time since a number 1 defense vs a number 1 offense since the Giants/Billdos, and we seen what happened to the unstoppable Billdos offense, they got pasted. But this is Manning who I think has too many weapons in a offensive friendly league. The Forehead will lead his team to victory, Feb 2.

I'd like to see Peyton win it and cement the GOAT status.

Love watching Brady miss open receivers all game. Been living off this "clutch" reputation from ten years ago, when in reality he just crushes cupcake matchups in the divisional and gets owned in the conf champ game year after year

@Hanknaples Oh, this is perfect.

They should just hire Mangini, amirite!?

@Tyrone Garcia

You really think with the pats obtaining a  solid TE and some vertical threats for Brady, and Wilfork, Mayo, and Spikes coming back healthy and the Pats addressing their secondary, that with BB and Brady still at the helm, that they will still not STILL be the team to beat? I cant see them declining yet for the life of me.  They lost top weapons like Gronk, Hernandez, and Welker, and an experienced deep threat like LLyod and also had the heart of their defense hurt. I wish they decline, but I in no way see it yet. I wish I had a nickel for everytime I heard the pats are in decline or Brady is done. Eventually, but not for a couple of years.

Wilson is solid.  He protects the ball.  But because of his size he leaves the pocket quickly.  Kaepernick is much more of a work in progress.

@jake100 There dead and they suck we should of beaten them twice just face it the dynasty died years ago When you have the unpredictable jets  bills, and Miami, to beat out for the division its easy to win.

@jake100

I see kinks in the armor that I have never seen before.  Of course they can come back strong but, for the first time in a long time, it's possible they go in the other direction.  Brady, like Eli, can't do it all himself.  Combine a mistake or two in the draft with a key injury or two, and they could be the 2013 NY Giants in 2014. In hindsight, they (like our Jets) ended up playing a down NFC South.  They had six games in the AFC East against 4 rookie QBs and a scandal ridden team. They lost to the Jets, the Panthers (at home) and to the Bengals.  Only real "quality" wins were over Ravens and Colts.  Colts hobbled into playoffs and had to play in cold Foxborough.  Take away two wins against the Colts and where are they?  In the past, Brady/Bellichek took no-name NFL quality talent and made them stars.  Not this year.  They need a bigger retool than at any time in the past decade.

MarshRandy
MarshRandy

@jake100 clearly they're still gonna be in the playoffs but the good thing is neither the Dolphins or Bills have stepped up as the AFC East team of the future, and with a good draft/offseason we should be able to get in that conversation again

jaygo
jaygo

@MarshRandy The jacked part was OK. Screaming that he's the best in the NFL was a bit over the top.  And he said it again was he was calmer later when interviewed by the Fox panel.  I can't remember the last time a player declared on national TV that he's the best at his position.  People do take offense at the lack of humility and modesty.

jaygo
jaygo

@jake100 I thought Broncos would be 3 1/2 point favorites when I went to bed.  Woke up to see they're 1 point favorites.  My favorite handicappers  - - - the ones with the best records for 2013 - - - both have SeaMonsters by 0.5 right now.  I'll wait a week for injury and weather updates before making a pick but, as I said, my first instinct is to take the Broncos.  Just seems like Peyton's year to cap off what will go down as the greatest offensive team in NFL history with a SB win.  Also, Dever D is very good and will slow down Lynch and Wilson.  This isn't just about  Peyton vs Seattle D.

Brendan
Brendan

@Tyrone Garcia What did he do that was wrong? It's very obvious that Crabtree was talking trash himself, and that set Sherman off. He was targeted one time, which was a game-clinching defensed pass.

I keep seeing people crush the guy over his interview yesterday and I have no idea why. We celebrate the violent, animalistic nature of a sport, but then criticize its best players when they exude pure emotion. It's hypocritical.

@MarshRandy I too loved seeing the Pats and Brady lose and seeing Bradys face.

:-)

I'll root for Denver, but I think Seattle will win.

Brady will also be 37? 36? Not many Qbs perform at that age too.

Tyrone Garcia
Tyrone Garcia

@jake100 @Tyrone Garcia once teams stop respecting the pats and fearing them you will see teams approach them differently and start to beat them. Brady didnt look like himself yesterday and he looks like he is getting frustrated.. The Pats have a good team but once that QB starts to fall off the beam its over for the Pats.

Tyrone Garcia
Tyrone Garcia

@Brendan @Tyrone Garcia I understand and agree..but I remember back when he was talking trash about how he was better than revis and he might be. I'm ok with it on the field but he just looked ignorant when he did it on the interview...Yes I remember Bart Scoot Famous Cant wait but that was portrayed better Sherman looked like he was lost and just wanted to vent IDK it just didn't come out right...

@a57se@MarshRandy

Oh I sure hope this will be a good game...

I just want to see a battle and may the best team win..

Do defense still win championships. If so the D hawks should take that or if offenses win championships the Broncos should win it interesting this is truly football at its best and in NY. cool

I really can't keep track with everyone that posts here, especially when they keep changing their names. But I was wondering is Hanknaples the one waiting for the perfect storm in Miami

BRENDAN:

OHHH WAIT........that's right, It was you AND BENT that keep bringing up the Henne bet !!!

Hanknaples
Hanknaples

@Brendan @Hanknaples

I figured I would write off your (Washington' bet)  loss against MY Taxes but since you insist on bringing up the Henne bet..........

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples Sanchez didn't just do better in games played. He had a very positive TD/INT ratio, a better winning %, more cumulative stats, a higher TD %/lower INT %. They had nearly identical completion%'s and QB ratings.

Sanchez had a better year, it's not up for debate.

At least you gave up on the Leon Washington thing, though.

Hanknaples
Hanknaples

@Brendan @Hanknaples

Ok, no problem....what are we doing about Henne's bet???

Higher QB rating/Higher Ranking/Higher Passing % vs More games ?????

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples You're right, I did. But you can't remember them, so I wasn't going to demand you post them if you forgot what they are. Post them if you remember, no big deal.

Hanknaples

@Brendan @Hanknaples

Your short memory is being affected Brendan !!!!

Did you forget that it was YOU that requested to see them ???

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples Feel free to post those, as well. I'd happily read them if they're as good as the first 10.

Brendan
Brendan

@Tyrone Garcia They interviewed a guy a minute after making the biggest play of his life, I'm surprised he could even formulate a sentence he was so juiced up on adrenaline.

It's just not fair to use that to generally bash the guy, he's an intelligent person (graduated from Stanford), he was just fired up beyond belief because he played the game of his life in the game of his life.

HAHAHA! That is very funny! What's that old saying about the pot calling the kettle black?

@Brendan@a57se

Oh just stop trying to tell everyone how they should think, it is getting old.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Great. It wasn't a joke, it's 100% true. It's hypocritical to call out Sherman for being pumped up after the game when that's what he gets paid to be like, and that's why we turn into watch.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Great reply, 57.

What I said was an honest, insightful opinion, laughing at it is insulting.
