Open thread: Divisional Saturday 2014

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers

With Divisional weekend kicking off today, we wanted to set up a spot for reactions to Saturday’s games. Here’s our quick previews:

Saints (12-5) at Seahawks (13-3) — Winning in Philly is one thing, but can the Saints take their show on the road in the most raucous NFL stadium?  When the Saints came to Century Link in December, the Seahawks crushed them 34-7.  Beyond the advantage of the Twelfth Man, the Seahawks boast what might be the league’s best secondary and a defensive line that can give the Sons of Anarchy a run for their money.  Russell Wilson saw no sophomore slump, completing 63.1% of his passes for  3357 yards along with 26 scores and 9 interceptions.  Multi-million dollar man Percy Harvin is magically healthy and expects to play Saturday after being limited much of the season due to offseason surgery.  While Rob Ryan did a commendable job in his first year with the Saints, can he slow down Marshawn Lynch again while simultaneously stopping Seattle’s pass attack?

Colts (12-5) at Patriots (11-5) — After winning a shootout last week against the Chiefs, Andrew Luck and T.Y. Hilton head on the road to take on the Patriots in what will be a hostile environment for the plucky Colts.  This time though Belichick will have a more stable and somewhat healthier secondary to help even out his team’s play.  Still, will it be enough to stop the Colts next version of Reggie Wayne in Hilton?  Hilton has been targeted 33 times in his last two games totaling 379 yards and two scores.  What’s worse, Hilton is being used in four locations on the field, making it harder for defenses to get a single look on the dynamic receiver.  Meanwhile, Brady’s Patriots might be holding this year’s team together with duct tape, but it has worked to push them to a 11-5 record and a bye.  Can the Patriots experience manage to hold off a young Colts team who seems to be getting hot at the right time?

The best thing about NFL Network when hey talk playoff's  is the "Jet Helmet" in the background can't wait to the Super bowl is over so they can talk Jets a little in the free agency and the draft.

luck reminds me Of Dan Marino he had a great passing game but terrible running game.and iffy defense. The colts need to get a better running back to give luck some help.

Better hope Broncos win or else NE is in the SB again :|

The Pats are now a running team. Blount is a absolute offensive threat at all times and Logan Mankins is just so consistently unreal.

It is amazing what a team can accomplish when the FO, coaches and players are on the same page.

I gave up! Better go sleep and pray for Manning to kill these Pats... and guess I'll have to still hear from brazilian Brady (Gisele?) fans... LOL

Luck is being inconsistent all night... and turning the luck to damm Pats!

BTW, test Geno one more year and draft WR & TE on first/sec and then use the BPA on rest of them.

Cheers from Brazil!

The pats have to be the luckiest team in the NFL instead of the colts getting good field position after a miss punt they give up a safety and walk away 21-12 in stead of 21-17 Then the interception that should of been a first down. Should I continue watching. If it was the jets it be 21-19 right now or most teams.

Anyone that doesn't think the Jets should draft a QB early must not be watching the game.

I'm just going to go out and say it and piss a couple people off. Mark Sanchez isn't a a bad qb. His first season he played like a rookie excelled in the playoffs. Second year he got better throwing 17 Tds and less interceptions again doing VERY good in the playoffs along with how many game winning drives. In 2011 the team was lacking but he was still improving... They were losing players and they had a hard schedule. In 2012 yes he did bad but he had tony sparano as his OC and abs no offense. Eli Manning had identical stats as Sanchez and Eli had a miserable season even worse then Sanchez in 2012.

Sanchez got attacked hard by the media and they made him out to be a lot worse than he was. I think the Jets are keeping quiet about the situation because they know Mark is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. When he gets to the playoffs check his stats they are Damn good.

He wasn't worth that huge extension but I seriously think letting this guy go will haunt the jets forever. He would thrive with Marty as OC and some talent at WR.

Kill me for this but the stats are there he was improving up until they 2012 and I don't blame him for regressing that year with the staff and talent around him.

Question for you guys. Would you trade a 4th or even 5th round pick for Percy Harvin? He's got about 5 years and $52 million left on his deal after this season. I think the Seahawks would jump on that deal if it meant clearing that cap number off their books (I admit I don't know how the acceleration of bonuses would affect their cap in 2014).

Harvin's a playmaker. And you have to feel good that he came back this season and played, despite the concussion. He'll be ready to go next year.

@Tyrone Garcia

Luck in No way reminds me of Dan Marino.  Accuracy, NO!, Quick Release No!, Luck had 7 picks in two games and people on this blog think he reminds them of Marino?

Geno throws 7 picks in two games and everyone would run him out of town.  We have to stop drinking the Kool-Aid of the media (Not personal at you just all people who let the media color their perception)

All four picks yesterday were bad decisions or poor throws or a combo of both.  He could have easily thrown another pick where the DB's ran into each other.

@Tyrone Garcia

I don't think Luck will ever be as good as Marino.....but I get your point.

Too bad for the colts they gave up a 1st rounder to the browns for t-rich...he not also killed the colts but he killed my fantasy team too

As I said above if Geno thew 7 picks in two games the pitch forks would be out!!

I'm not watching the game.....but I think we should draft a QB.

true.....

The Jets need to add a QB....(hopefully Manziel.....but improbable)

@JCuratola3 I agree with everything you said except not bringing Geno up at all. Not every QB comes right out of the draft and performs at a Russell Wilson/Andrew Luck/RG3III level and not need time to develop (I read somewhere Geno didn't even know how to take a snap from under center). Another year with the same coaching and with added weapons will benefit OUR starting QB right now which is Geno. Would like to bring Mark back on a lower salary but not if he thinks he's worth this kind of money.

Pat d
Pat d

I agree with you. All the QBs that people talk about bringing in are worse than Sanchez. If the Jets do let Sanchez go they need to draft a QB.

@JCuratola3

Mark Sanchez isn't a bad QB?

(giggle)

Neither is Tebow, or Harrington, or Fitzpatrick or any of the other guys in the basement among NFL starting QB's.....

Letting Sanchez go will haunt the Jets forever? Sanchez the hall of famer......Been hearing this garbage for 5 years son.....and there's no such thing as the Ghost of Mark Sanchez  but the buttfumble was REAL

Getting married to QB's like Sanchez....no thanks

joe11

@davidus1 Pay him $10 mil a season and get him fully healthy for 4 games a season? No thank you. Definitely better options out there than that.

@davidus1 Great question.   The $50mm WR def scares me, but I want the playmaker. It's close, but I'd probably pass.

No draft marqise lee and sign golden tate draft Jordan Mathews in the 2nd

I wouldn't. Too fragile for that kinda money.

@bradysucks @Pat d

Gents, we have a game managing qb. he's servicable.

We have huge needs at wr and safety. Those needs absolutely need to be addressed with top tier tallent in this draft

Many will say BPA is the way to go...but I disagree when glaring holes are abound. take the best WR avail in first round and go BPA from there

Pat d
Pat d

Manziel may be the 2nd QB taken. Can't see him getting past the Raiders.

If he does drop it will be interesting. I can't see Geno winning a QB competition with Manziel

JCuratola3
JCuratola3

You can do that for any QB .. I'm not going to argue with you you hate Sanchez and your blind to the facts. Like I said and you don't have to agree if they release Sanchez he will find success elsewhere

JCuratola3

I think he'll be good I just don't want to release Sanchez.

Screw Sanchez......he sucks....move on.....This ship has sailed

Vlad - sucks

Hill - sucks

Sanchez - sucks

None of these guys are bringing the Jets to a super bowl......

The sooner we realize this the sooner we can move forward....and make progress......

How many years ...how many games.....how much poor production do some people need to see the truth?

These guys are what their production says they are

If the browns mess up these 2 first rounders this year they should just call it quits

It is always BPA. That is the difference between champs and bottom feeders

bradysucks

@JCuratola3

Mark Sanchez is not Archie Manning's son and he is not Peyton Manning's brother and he does not have 2 super bowl rings on his fingers. These comparison's to Eli Manning are outrageous at this point in time. Eli did have a terrible year but this doesn't make Eli and Sanchez similar QB's.

JCuratola3
JCuratola3

Yes in 2012 he was the worst .. But Eli just had a miserable season does that mean he sucks

bradysucks
bradysucks

Yes I hate Sanchez as the Jets QB but you are the one who is blind to the facts. The facts are that every stat used to measure QB's such as turnover ratio, pass accuracy, completion % etc....In all of these crucial areas Mark is terrible compared to his peers....

Why aren't Trent Dilfer, Neil O'donnell, and Rex Grossman going to the hall of fame?? They are all QB's who went to the Super Bowl. This is a fact. Sanchez lost in the playoffs twice on teams good enough to have won the championship. Your argument that Sanchez is good because he won playoff games like Rex Grossman and Trent Dilfer is flawed...

You are the one ignoring the facts here

bradysucks
bradysucks

@JCuratola3

What about his game is good? His accuracy? His mobility? His deep passing? His decision making? His turnover ratio? His ability to throw the screen pass?

I am lost here....

He's had some good games.......but he is as inconsistent as they come and he is TERRIBLE at protecting the football

harold
harold

@JCuratola3

He had pretty good talent around him.  People keep overlooking these facts.  What we had on offense this year consistently was worst even than last year.  Sanchez is bad let's move on

bradysucks
bradysucks

@JCuratola3

Trent Dilfer won a super bowl sucking at QB and he was carried by the Ravens defense.....

I think Darrelle Revis and Cromartie etc in their prime might have had something to do with shutting down Brady and Manning.......

Mark Sanchez plays offense and the defense coached by Rex shut down Brady and Manning

Mark played well in the playoffs but he is WITHOUT QUESTION not an elite NFL QB or even close......He is a turnover machine who can win games provided the team around him is incredible......If you ask me and many others the Jets would have won a super bowl in 2009 or 2010 with a better QB on the team........but we'll never know

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Pat d

Agree.....Competition at QB and another young arm - I am all for it!

Jets drafted Sanchez round 1 and Kellen Clemens in round 2 and MISSED on both guys. They are both busts.

Geno may or may not be the answer (not sure).....but I am all for drafting a talented QB like Manziel in round 1 if the opportunity is there......

JCuratola3
JCuratola3

Trent Dilfer beat Peyton manning and Tom Brady in the playoffs ?

Pat d
Pat d

As far as playoff play Sanchez outplayed the opposing QBs. But watching Luck and Brady it is obvious the Jets need to draft a QB. You are right Sanchez is not in their class, but Geno doesn't look like he is either. And I don't want to wait 4 years to find out. If there is a QB that is on top of the draft board take him. Draft someone like Carr and lets have a real competition.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@JCuratola3

Sanchez did nothing that has not been done by Trent Dilfer (super bowl), Rex Grossman (super bowl), and Neil O'donnell (super bowl)........

Please......I am begging you....Don't compare Sanchez to Manning and Brady.....

I respect that you support Mark.....We're both Jets fans......and Mark is a Jet.....but please....He is not the answer for our franchise and he has shown this again and again......

The franchise needs a QB who can carry a team on his back if necessary and Sanchez isn't that guy, Any QB can look good with a top defense and  a top running game and even when Mark had this he was mediocre at best and inconsistent in his mediocrity

JCuratola3
JCuratola3

Dude I'm not a Sanchez apologist it's a fact. What do Brady Manning all have in common? They win when it matters so did Sanchez.

He showed that when he needed to make throws he good. Obviously he could improve it was his 4th year.

What's his playoff stats please remind me.. You say he sucks because what? He had one bad season? Every qb goes through slumps except maybe Brady and manning. It's just the media made everything blown out of proportion.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Pat d

yes I agree Pat d...

Drafting a QB is smart.....but Sanchez is in the past.....

Sanchez is not an elite NFL QB.....and he is not capable of protecting the football and he has proved this AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN

bradysucks
bradysucks

@JCuratola3

It's a big universe....No really....

In this big universe there will be other QB's who will make you forget alll about Sanchez

It's kind of like when you date a girl and you break up and think what did I let get away....and then one day you meet another girl and you move on and are actually happy.....

Sanchez  isn't Namath and never will be......He is so far below the other QB's who are elite in the NFL .....and it's not close

Pat d
Pat d

Bradysucks

Don't understand why you are shocked by my post. Reread my post if you need to but I said I don't mind if the Jets move on. Just if they do the Jets will need to draft a QB early. How much Sanchez was over paid or the horrible extension really don't matter any more. That is done. But all of the vets that have been mentioned here to bring in are worse than Sanchez. Also way too early to say how good Geno is.

JCuratola3
JCuratola3

You can keep saying how much he sucks and then ill see 17 touchdown season and a great playoff performance AGAIN and then follows that up with a 26 touchdown season. Watch us release him and become a star like I said it will haunt this franchise forever.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Pat d

Sanchez had a 5 year 100 million dollar audition in NY.....

Move on - He sucks...He is terrible.....Geno is much better than Sanchez and many of us have doubts about Geno being the answer......

Sanchez is part of the problem....not the solution.....

He's had 5 years and his stats say it all

The fact that people are still wanting more Sanchez is shocking at this point

Pat d
Pat d

I really don't have a problem if the Jets move on but it makes no sense to move on with QBs that are worse than Sanchez. If the Jets do move on they need to draft a QB, and I mean draft one early.
