Open Thread: Wildcard Sunday 2014

NFL: New York Jets at Cincinnati Bengals

With playoff football kicking off this weekend, we wanted to set up a spot for reactions to the games. Here’s our quick previews for Sunday’s slate:

Chargers (9-7) at Bengals (11-5) — Andy Dalton has led the Bengals to the postseason for the third time in a row, but will it be third time lucky? Cincinnati were one-and-done courtesy of the Texans in 2011 and 2012 as Dalton threw for four interceptions and no touchdowns. The Chargers snuck into the postseason with an overtime win against the Chiefs last week, despite the fact the Chiefs were resting several starters and had a chance to win the game with a late field goal. This will be the Chargers’ first postseason game since the Jets beat them 17-14 in January 2010.

49ers (12-4) at Packers (8-7-1) — For the second night in a row, the later of the two games features a superior team going on the road to face an inferior opponent with cold weather expected to be a major equalizer. The 49ers enter the game with a six-game winning streak and have the kind of power running game that might actually suit the conditions. On the other hand, the Packers had to rely on a come-from-behind win over the Bears with some late game heroics by Aaron Rodgers enabling them to clinch the NFC North.

Gholston and Schlegel in the same thread? That wore me out. Glad our season is over so I can take a few days off from TJB and not miss anything meaningful. I need a break after that.

Trade up and draft J. Manziel please.....

Manziel is every bit as exciting to watch and every bit as elusive as Kaepernick (who just single handedly beat Green Bay)

The sooner Jets fans realize we can't win a super bowl without a true difference maker at QB the sooner the Jets will win a Super Bowl

Jets number 1 priority is too get a franchise qb this offseason!

Two things I took away from today's games....

As foreign as yesterday's AFC game is to Jets fans, this game is all too familiar..

Daulton took a page out Sanchez book, fumbled the ball by himself for no reason instead of sliding

how many good games has the red rocket had since his "arrival" game against us??  1?  lol...

Wake up Goodell! No way a playoff team with 50% more wins should travel to play an 8 win team unless you want to reward mediocrity.

Jim Harbaugh Gave Michael Crabtree a new pair of Mittens how come he no give Auquan Bolden new Mittens . That's not fair ...I say how come you no give Auquan Bolden new Mittens!

@a57se Next years class arguably will be better than this years for qb class.   I am a huge fan of Johnny Football but the only way i draft him is if he slides to us at 18.

Geno for as much as he had his own struggles this year he did have some great moments, notched so good wins against quality competition as well.   He also made some throws this year that made me scratch my head but also made some that makes me think he deserves a shot to potentially start next year.

Bortles isnt the answer

@bradysucksGeno doesn't look that different to Kaep when he is running. i like Geno's upside.

marcus81
marcus81

@David Iantosca Geno was 8-8 with horrid receivers, give him some decent receivers to pass to, I said many times Kerley is the only decent receiver on the team, and Smith has a winning record when Kerley plays to prove it.

@David Iantosca

Agreed

For all the talk about the Jets needing help at WR  it gets lost that the truth is a franchise QB makes the biggest difference between winning and losing games and ultimately winning a championship. This is the deepest QB draft in years.......The Jets should make a move for Manziel

I don't know.

As Spent said... Geno's definitely pointing up!

@realityfanKaep almost lost the game with a horrible throw. if he isn't running he doesn't look that good

frustjetfn

@realityfan+1000! You beat me to it. I was going to say it's amazing to watch QB's like Kap & Rogers who make the team better around them vs having the team try to win by minimizing the QB.

I wonder if Rex sees this and decides it's no longer his father's NFL.

@bob Not going to happen, the Niners sound like they want to keep him he's still playing at a high level and he want's to stay with the Niners.

As solid as he is he's 33 years old. Aren't you tired of old one or two year rentals at the end of a players career?

I say pass.

When I told people I wanted the Jets to draft Russell Wilson people on this Blog said it was an absurd idea. I also liked Weeden at the time. In my view they both would have been much better than Sanchez. For having this opinion people said I was crazy. They also said I was crazy when I said Stephen Hill and Vlad were not good enough to start for the Jets. Well neither guy has produced in green and white thus far and lived up to their draft status..

QB is the most important position and you need an elite one to win a Super Bowl. If the Jets can get any of the top QB's in the draft and upgrade from Geno they should.

bradysucks
bradysucks

Mobile QB's like Geno are one hit away from serious injury (see RG3)

We all like Geno's upside - but there is no guarantee he reaches his potential which is why you always look at other QB's unless you have a QB who is already a top 15 QB in the league. Geno was a bottom 10 QB this season and he needs competition. He'll either rise above the competition or he won't.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Daniel @bradysucks

I watched Kaperenick and Aaron Rodgers in that playoff game today and it was so clear that Geno is not even in the same galaxy (talent wise) as those 2 QB's........Manziel on the other hand is very similar to Kaepernick and he's a big game player......The Jets need to take a shot at a big time QB in this draft if they get the chance.....

bradysucks
bradysucks

If Geno is the real thing he will beat out whatever competition the Jets bring in whether it is Manziel or a seasoned veteran. Nothing against Geno but the bottom line is he was unwatchable at times this season and bringing in competition should not be an issue. Anytime you can improve at QB it is a no brainer to try and do so...

2015 is shaping up pretty well for QBs too. I wouldn't be overly worried about passing up this class.

I never saw Dalton buttfumble and lead the NFL in turnovers....

but hey if Dalton was on the 2009 Jets with the best running game in the NFL and the best defense in the NFL maybe he too could ride the wave to some playoff wins and get his own GQ cover

@Eddy Lopez @marcus81

First Hank talks about missing Gholston and now we have some people mourning Sanchez......

You guys probably mourn the flu after it leaves your body when you get sick....

Sanchez? Nobody misses Gastineau and Marvin Powelll and Freeman McNeil and Al Toon and Wesley Walker but apparently it's a GREAT DAY to be mourning Mark Sanchez and Vernon Gholston......

The Jets blog has entered an alternate dimension where logic is inverted

marcus81
marcus81

@Pat d SF had 12 wins, and sometimes teams that win 11 games get left out and an 8-8 or 7-9 team will make the play offs if they're in a horrible division, that's life

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@Brendan@frustjetfnHello? The NFL Commissioner is in charge of success (profitability and market appeal) of the NFL product as it's CEO. That's why he gets the big bucks  And among his responsibilities is steadily improving and upgrading it's progress: that's why, if you haven't been paying attention, the Commissioner established all sorts of committees to help him succeed in this mission.

So changing the rule for playoff seating IS as much his responsibility to his business as fining players for misconduct and promoting rules to limit head-to-head collisions.

Brendan, get outta this thread and go back to arguing with Hanks kid on the last thread. I get off knowing there are folks who will wholeheartedly go to battle for V Gholston. I was just about to orgasm.

Kinda sounds like the 49ers know that next year they wont be able to buy Bolden new Mittens.

I haven't answered it because it is a dumb question. This is a Jets football blog and the whole point of this forum is for fans to voice their opinions. You know this! Obviously none of us have any real power...As for the fortune of the team I think that many of us who have followed the team for over 25 years have witnessed our share of triumphs and mistakes made by this franchise. Perhaps some of us have learned a thing or two. Fans often get it wrong but they sometimes get it right. As an example many fans figured out early on that Chrebet could play while many of the so called "experts" threw their stones.

But to keep it simple - this is a fan forum where fans may voice their opinions even if they don't get listened to or agreed with! :)

bradysucks
bradysucks

Tebow never got to play as a Jet and I like the Gators so of course I liked Tebow. However you exaggerate. Unlike you I don't get married to QB's who turn over the football. It took you 5 years to admit Sanchez sucks. It took me half a season to admit both Sanchez and Tebow were not the solution at QB for the Jets long term. Based on the way Sanchez played last year he should have benched much earlier than he was. Being that Tebow was his back up I wanted to see him get a shot. It never happened. I knew in 2009 that Sanchez was a mistake and Bassett hated the pick also...

bradysucks
bradysucks

A bit premature to say this.....

How many people on the Jets blog said drafting Russell Wilson was a dumb idea? Quite a few of us. Manziel has elite mobility just like Kaelernick and Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. We don't know yet if he can read NFL defenses and cut it in the NFL but he certainly has the potential to be a good QB. Maybe Geno will be also...then again maybe Geno regresses like Sanchez. I'd feel better going after another QB in the draft if a good one is available

bradysucks
bradysucks

I just don't like the idea that guys like Stephen Hill and Geno should be guaranteed starting jobs because of their POTENTIAL. Guys should play based on PRODUCTION.

Production wins games

davem

It's "seeding". Not seating

Meant for frustjet

marcus81
marcus81

@frustjetfn@marcus81@Pat d they would have to do what they did in hockey, condense the divisions and the top records get in, I know hockey has expanded play offs which I'm against

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@marcus81@Pat dThat's the dilemma. I've heard a few coaches on radio talk shows say the seating rule should be changed and making the playoff itself was reward for finishing first in the Division. And others are for keeping it the way it is.

If enough coaches make enough noise it'll change. If not, we'll have to live with it.

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@Brendan@frustjetfnAt least we agree on the last point: it's not the NBA.

Both the NBA and the NHL ruined it's playoffs by letting almost every team make it. They made the regular season mean next to nothing, which is why I opposed Jerry Jones' suggestion to include more teams. Yeah, adding 2 is not a back-breaker, but it would be heading in the wrong direction. - Something that JJ has made his trademark w/the 'Boys.

Brendan
Brendan

@frustjetfn Dude, you're whining about Goodell not changing the system, when it wasn't changed after the 7-9 Seahawks won their division. They also ended up winning, beating a heavily favored team, and gave us one of the best NFL highlights of all time (Beastmode's run). I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, it's never changing, this isn't the NBA.

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@Brendan@frustjetfnThe commissioner is in charge of the entire  NFL product. He establishes direction of the biz and has been very successful or would've been replaced by the owners.

Based on your comments, I'm now thinking you really don't know how corporations work. - In that case, maybe you work for the government? :)

Brendan
Brendan

@frustjetfn Oh, Roger Goodell changed an existing rule to make it this way? I didn't realize that.
