Poll: Should the Jets keep Rex Ryan for 2014?

Reports have been circulating this week that Jets head coach Rex Ryan’s job could be in jeopardy come the end of the season.

In his five years as head coach of the Jets Ryan is 41-38. Ryan took his first two teams to the AFC Championship, posting four playoff wins over six games. Since then, Ryan has failed to make the playoffs and seen no better than a .500 record dating to 2011.

Please vote in our poll below.

Wonder if the Jets will announce their Rex decision at their end of season wrap-up or maybe Rex will let the cat out if the bag at his post-game presser. Either way, sh-t or get off the pot.

Heard a disturbing thought on the radio that said if Rex comes back for 2014, Geno will start the whole season. That's a living nightmare unless they draft a QB, hire a viable vet and he beats them out for the job, However, just awarding a job out of loyalty or obsession even if the evidence doesn't support it is quintessential Rex and the reason he'll ultimately get fired.

If the choice is another year of Geno - Rex or an offensive HC with open competition at every position, then I opt for the latter because another lame 16 games is too pathetic to contemplate.

All the support I am seeing behind Rex Ryan is making me feel very nauseous. As usual other fans are right about Jets fans...they are clueless. How much longer are we going to put up with this boring, mediocre show that Rex's teams keep portraying on the field. People keep harping on about this team exceeding expectations ? lol Everyone knew this team wasn't going to make the playoffs and finish with a losing record and guess what that is what they did. The Jets finished exactly were they were expected to finish.....no surprises there. Even from year one Rex's teams have continued to play inconsistently, on both sides of the ball. For the sake of simplification I will explain in dot points why Ryan should shove off.

-Inconsistent play on the field which probably stems from a lack of discipline and preparation.

-Failure to develop talent.

-The offense stinks.

-Rex just seems unintelligent and clueless in post game interviews. Don't want a fat jock running the franchise I care about.

I leave you all with this quote from Einstein which I think best describes the fallacy of Jets fans support of Ryan.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"

If Joey didn't vote 321 times the results woulds been even more lopsided.

I'm pretty shocked how many people are on the "yes" side of this. (I am, just surprised that I'm not alone).

Of all the Jets coaches having five or more years tenure, Rex is the only one over a 50% winning record.

REXTEND!

Watch Rex's postgame speech after the Browns game on www.nyjets.com. You'll all see Woody Johnson in the background as Rex is talking. Take a good look at Woody's face. This is an owner who likes his head coach. It could not be more obvious. Some fans can whine as much as they want but it doesn't change the fact that Rex is the best coach the Jets have had since Parcells.

Give Rex Tom Brady and give Bellicheck Mark Sanchez, Kellen Clemens, & Geno and we'll see who has the better offense.....You need a QB in the NFL and you need a GM who can draft talent on offense. Rex is a great coach

I would like to thank all the brass at TJB and all the posters for all the insight, venting, and even the hard knocks we share together as Jets fans here on this sight... but most of all I wish you all a Merry Christmas!!

I would only add that I'm thrilled (and indeed consider it kind of a present) that 85% of you guys are supporting Rex in the poll...

I agree that 8-8 or even 7-9 has exceeded expectations this year.  However, this will be his third consecutive year not to make the playoffs.  In addition,

- Coming out of the break, the team was 5-4 and in control of their playoff destiny.  Since then, just 2, max 3 wins against a much easier schedule.

- Rex has demonstrated too much loyalty to players like Reed and even Winters which has hurt the team.

- Throughout his tenure, his limited expertise on offense has not improved nor has his offensive philosophy changed. Still ground and pound and the wildcat.

Therefore, I would extend him for one more year. If he can't get to the playoffs next year with a more experienced team and loads of cap room, then it is time to move on.

Rex for all his imperfections has done more to change the perception of this team, to make this team relevant, then anyone except Weeb himself. With the exception of Parcells he is the best coach that we ever had.

It would be ludicrous to at this point in the team's history to allow a new GM to inflict what would in all likelihood be an inferior coach on this team and on us fans.

Why would change for the sake if change be change for the better? Why in God's name would you disrupt what has been established, and what shows promise for some unknown who might need 2 to three years to get where Rex already is, or could in fact go backwards.

We buy the seats, we pay the bills, and it's time to stand up and be counted.

Why would any Jets fan want to save Rex's job? You are giving all us knowledgable Jets fans a bad name!

@frustjetfn I'm not sure what you're watching but I've seen a QB that gradually improved as the season went along. His footwork needs improvement but that's what off-seasons are for. I'd rather see the Jets surround him with weapons than grab another QB.

@jetrealist

Without getting into whether or not einstein said this, perhaps the definition of insanity RE: the Jets should be: having a mastermind defensive coach that the players respect and will run through a brick wall for as the HC, but saddling him with ridiculous QB play every year (not to mention a dearth of offensive skill positions).

That being said, to me it would be pretty insane to jettison that coach and start over just because some clueless, impatient fans NEED blood to be satisfied.

Ron Alexander
Ron Alexander

@jetrealist Thank god there is someone else here that gets it! The mindless loyalty seen here illustrated by these pool results mirrors exactly what ails this organization. By signing on for more Rex we are basically saying its o.k to remain mediocre. Its time to set the bar higher than 8-8. What happened to the Jet fans who recognized after tho AFC championship game losses that actually winning the division and gaining home field advantage was actually the easiest way to get to the Superbowl vs eeking in as the last seed wildcard and having to win three games on the road. Rex has had five years to figure this out and considering all the coaching changes he's made since he's been here and how much influence he's had in getting the players he wanted I think its time to give someone else a chance. With a new GM in charge its only a matter of time before he brings "his own" guy in anyway so lets get the show on the road.(or off the road!)

Bent

@Marcus Armstrong If they'd have lost against the Browns it probably would have been the other way round.  That's how fickle we are.

I wonder if this poll was influenced by livefire, I can't believe that many JETS fans want Rex gone!

Ron Alexander
Ron Alexander

@lrjets Really ?  three games over 500 (two of which were playoff games where he's 4-2)which means his regular season record is plus 1. Again, unless your o.k being mediocre we need to aim higher!

Ron Alexander
Ron Alexander

@bradysucks He's had 5 years to figure that out and yet he supports not one but two human turn over machines and blindly  says they give us the best chance to win. Its time to take the emotion out of the equation. I personally like Rex and supported him untll the S.Holmes debacle at the end of the Miami game in 2011 where he cluessly proclaimed he was unaware Holmes was pulled from the game and that he was unaware of what had been going on regarding Holmes? Come on dude,

I wonder if the PFF Pro Bowl selections line up with their rankings?

Bent
Bent

@djf1 No way Folk makes it in real life with Tucker's recent heroics (and Gostkowski has been just as deadly).

Wilkerson won the Jets MVP award, voted by the players.  That shows they know who their best player is.  He might not be going in real life either, though.  Last I saw he was 6th in the voting for AFC defensive ends.

Jeff E. Guy
Jeff E. Guy

@Neil Herschkowitz  I think he's better than Parcells (as a Jets coach). He took the team to two AFC championships (and he could have won either one with 1. A better slot corner or 2. A better call on the Sanchez "fumble" that left his hand as a spiral) and he's the only coach in Jets history to coach the team for at least five years and have a winning record.

@Stephan Niewdach Because they know Rex can win - he has done with a shaky QB, much more than you can say for belicheck or most other coaches. Give him some real players on O and we are in the playoffs every year.

Jeff E. Guy
Jeff E. Guy

@Stephan Niewdach With all due respect, you, sir, are part of the problem. This team does nothing but fire coaches. They've fired one -- on average-- every 2.9 years since 1969. Why do they fire so many coaches? Because impatient Jet fans are always chasing the next bright shiny object. It takes time to change the culture of a losing organization. Fortunately the poll results show that fans are coming around to the reality that continuity might be a Good Thing.

jetrealist
jetrealist

@DarrolRayFanClub@jetrealist Instead of attacking my argument you attack my quotes and comments. Maybe because I and others who have said the same are right. I quoted Einstein because what he said has relevance to the way people are thinking here. You think that by keeping Rex and just adding some players that will change things it won't as it has been done before with the same results. We have also had three offensive coordinators in three years with the same results, tells me Rex is the problem in this organization. Why do the Pats contend and continue to dominate the Jets and the AFC east?... because of Bill Belichek. If the root of the tree is rotted it won't produce good fruit.

Jeff E. Guy
Jeff E. Guy

@Ron Alexander @lrjets The fact that Ryan is the only coach in Jets history with a winning record after five years on the job demonstrates just how bad this organization has been. Mediocre is an improvement. But it's more than that. Mediocre is the spring board to greatness. When you look at a team like the Steelers, their "bad" years are 7-9. While the Jets change coaches every 2.9 years, the Steelers change them every 14.6. You can't expect Ryan to turn the Jets into the Steelers over night. It takes time and I'm pleased that a large majority of Jet fans seem to want to give him more time. I'm convinced he's the right man for the job. I hope Woody agrees.

@Bent @bldsgrnNwht how the hell can that be with the players they gave him to work with on O?

The team is predicted by most to win 4-5 games, they win (at least) 7 and they"re going to fire him? Never thought I'd say this, but if that happens:

Same Old Jets.
