The NFL has officially announced the rosters for the 2014 Pro Bowl. As expected/feared, no Jet was selected, although three players were named as alternates:
Bent, TheJetsBlog.comThis is disappointing, but not altogether unexpected. No Jets player was faring too well in fan voting the last time the NFL released an update and the fact that the team has missed the postseason for the third straight year doesn’t help matters.
Obviously it’s a complete farce that Muhammad Wilkerson, who some experts have been saying has been the second-best defensive player in the NFL this year, will not be on the roster but hopefully he’ll still get a chance to go if someone drops out. Cromartie and Mangold each being selected as an alternate in a down year is surprising, although Mangold arguably deserves extra credit for holding the fort while often having to cover for rookie Brian Winters. Other snubs include Damon Harrison, Nick Folk and Sheldon Richardson.
Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.comHey did everyone see that the Pro Bowl has a new format this year? What fun!
Instead of having teams comprised of the AFC and NFC’s “best” in intuitively neutral star-spangled jerseys, the whole game has gotten an overhaul and only the “best” players, regardless of conference will don jerseys which colors represent one of the most irrelevant rivalries in all of sport, Oregon’s Civil War.
I know it’s not been a great year for the Jets, but not one Jet was voted in? No Nick Folk? No Muhammad Wilkerson?
Other than to recognize that people who actually watch football, like the ATL crew agree with our assessment, the fact that Wilkerson was on the snub list gives me zero consolation.
We would always rather a Jets player be on the Pro Bowl roster than not, but if Mo Wilkerson can’t get voted into the Pro Bowl after the season he just had, then as we always say, this is still a poorly run homecoming queen contest. Now it’s just a re-jumbled poorly run homecoming queen contest with even crappier gowns.
