I wonder if this last game will determine the status of Simms and Boyd, I wonder if they will be battling for that 3rd string.

I just don't want to see hill cut by the jets and sign with another team who develops that potential into a star receiver. We'd all be kicking ourselves then.

Im confident that we will not agree with that quote when the time comes.

I'm sure we'll keep the right guys because whoever we keep will be the right guy!

@Isaac Miller My gut feeling is that the Jets will commit to Hill for another year, it helps the Jets see if Hill can finally get it in his 3rd season, if not then not all is lost, they can atleast raise his stock during this season and get better value in a trade. I think it would be stupid to just let him go and allow another team to take him for nothing and experiment with him to basicly do the same thing get value in return for a trade.

@Brendan Lowell Rose, Miguel Maysoney, Spadola...

They be dropping like flies.

With all the starters (and Sanchez) resting this week's Expendables is shaping up to be a Vlad special.

@levi How about the day after when they pick up a couple of other teams trash?

@bradysucks

I'd really rather someone else than Gates. But otherwise, yeah, sounds about right.

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks On 3-WR sets I'm guessing that Nelson comes in and Kerley slides inside. The top-3 is Decker/Kerley/Nelson, so I figure they'll be on the field first.

Saunders will have to work his way in, I'd assume.

I agree with u man but it looks like the writing is on the wall from what people are saying is he's a goner.

@Bent @Brendan What Sanchez isn't playing, darn, you just took away my motivation for watching with all the starters resting, it would have been nice seeing our backup front seven harass him a little..lol

@Bent @Brendan

Take a look at the CB's in the games you review...maybe you culd do a "We wouldn't mind seeing this guy or that guy get cut and the Jets pick him up" type of deal there...

@a57se  No you wont, you are already disagreeing with me.

Gates is nothing special but he can be developed. I actually agree with Hank on this. Gates at least can run routes and create space on a variety of routes. Stephen Hill in my view  has always been a one trick pony who isn't effective running the entire route tree......As a result, I'd rather have Gates. I won't complain though if Hakim makes the roster instead

@Brendan You like Salas at all?  Not sure if you've commented on him before or if I've just missed it.

I view Nelson as a back up on the outside at WR. I view Kerley as a starting WR on the outside who is capable of playing slot WR (as we know).

 I think the Jets are far more dangerous starting Kerley on the outside and using Amaro or Saunders in the slot. I think Nelson is a very average WR who should definitely earn a roster spot (but with limited playing time)

@a57se @Bent @Brendan As a general rule, CBs everywhere are struggling with the new rules.  TONS of penalties.  Jets have been lucky on that front.

I'll always be keeping my eyes peeled but I can't say anyone's impressed me much so far.

@bradysucks @juunit

I'd actually say that Gates is a horrible route runner. He has the speed, but he doesn't execute. I seem to remember some INTs because of his poor routes.

Back when we first got him, I remember Bent saying the Dolphins cut him because his lack of route running ability didn't fit in their new West Coast Offense. Of course the irony there, is he's now here in our WCO.

t__k

@bradysucks @juunit I feel like Gates is the same one trick pony - Only runs the fly pattern.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't stand the guy.

Brendan
Brendan

@t__k He's kind of like the Bilal Powell of WR's. He doesn't do anything exceptionally, but he seems to do a little bit of everything.

BDarc23

@bradysucks @Brendan Kerley is probably not as effective on the outside. I agree on Nelson. He is a solid player but probably tops out at around 600 yds receiving.

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks I agree Kerley is the starter, I just meant when they bring the 3rd WR into the game, I expect it to be Nelson, while they slide Kerley inside most of the time (where he's basically lethal to a defense).

Did you notice Derek Cox when you were looking at Vlad?

The Vikes released him and I thought he might be a good candidate for us since he is a press corner...

@juunit @bradysucks

I have no love for Gates.....but I think he has more upside than Hill.....

I don't think Hill has the hands or route running ability to ever make it in the NFL....

Gates has improved his route running since joining the Jets. He was terrible in Miami and he has had some terrible drops for the Jets. His route running HAS improved though quite a bit and his speed is world class

@juunit @bradysucks

Yup and Jeff Ireland, that sage of NFL Eval men, said that he was afraid that someone else would take the time to let Gates develop and he would come back to bite the DOlphins in the butt...

@BDarc23 @bradysucks @Brendan

David Nelson had 61 receptions for 658 yards and 5 TD's in 2011 with the Bildos...he started 13 games and appeared in all 16...

@a57se @Bent @Brendan

Vikings were like the worst secondary in the NFL last year. They'll be better this year, but a guy who can't even make that secondary is of no interest to me.

Bent

@a57se @Bent @Brendan

No but I've seen him in the past.  He's always been adequate but nothing special (which might be what we need, but might also not be better than what we can get anyway from our existing roster).

BDarc23
BDarc23

@a57se @BDarc23 @bradysucks If I was then I would mention how much potential he has and how he was a project when we drafted him and you don't give up on that yet... BS loves when people say that

juunit

@bradysucks @juunit

Well I know you won't agree, but if it's between Hill and Gates then I'd keep Hill. They both suck, but Hill is taller and faster. He's also a more capable blocker.

Frankly I'd cut them both to avoid sending Enunwa through waivers, but that doesn't really seem to be in line with the team's thinking.

Brendan
Brendan

@Tom Riccio 57 was pointing out you messing up his name, fyi.

I expect Hakim to make the team, he's going to be huge for the team as a gunner.

a57se
a57se

@Bent @a57se @Brendan

Interesting because he was a PFF secret superstar a couple years ago while with jacksonville...he went to SD on a pretty good size FA deal and SD, of course, used him in off coverage and zone which he was not very good at and he looked bad so they cut him...

The guy is 6'1"tall and 195 lbs. with 4.39 speed...

just seems like the kind of guy that some good coaching in a press man scheme might just help revive the guys' career.

jetsjerk

@Brendan @Tom Riccio He is our best gunner, that's why he makes the team.   Just watched the Cinci and Giants games again, Actually, he's so fast he over pursues sometimes.

Bent

@a57se @Bent @Brendan Yeah, that was when I was doing a bunch of Jags games.  He stood out with them because they were so bad.  Haha.

juunit

@jetsjerk @Brendan @Tom Riccio

We had a guy like that a couple years ago. Might've been Trufant. He'd always get down the field quickly, but then he'd fail to make the play, making his speed largely irrelevant.

Brendan
Brendan

@jetsjerk Yeah, which is a problem I'd gladly take.

"Teaching Hakim how to slow down so he stops running past the return man" is something I can live with. His speed is just outrageous on the outside.

a57se
a57se

@Bent @a57se @Brendan

Well he does have 4 INT's in 3 of his 5 seasons which is actually pretty good production...he has also been nicked up a lot in his career.

I guess it doesn' take much to be a secret superstar with the Jags!

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se He certainly had good numbers this preseason (only 11 yards on 7 targets) but the bad news is that all came against backups.  He didn't get any second half reps in the last two games and entered with the second unit in the second quarter in game one.

a57se
a57se

@Bent @a57se

Maybe they are trying the old okey doke with him...release him early, then re-sign him after the first game hoping that he falls through the cracks...
