Quote: Schefter on Vick-to-Jets rumors

I don’t expect Michael Vick to be back in Philadelphia…And then he’s gonna have to decide what’s the best circumstance for him moving forward. I think the Jets will be in play. … I definitely think the Jets will have some level of interest in Michael Vick. Definitely.”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Right now I would prioritize FAs WR Golden Tate and OLB Brian Orakpo... then bring in one of the Chiefs FA Guards along with another year with Colon... Winters and Vlad provide depth....now our O line is addressed.

Cro gets another year at a reduced rate, and we draft another CB in round 3.... Milliner starts as well, and we hold on to Walls or Berry for depth.

I would rather spend money on  J Byrd than an expensive FA QB.... I'm leaning on a Geno Smith with a killer O line, two Monster TEs, a ramped up WR corps, backed up by Simms, and a 3rd round QB like Mettenberger.

So to recap... Tate, Orakpo, Schwartz (or Asamoah,) and Byrd..... two Offense two Defense...

Everything else is in house and can be resigned.....and yes, we must draft like geniuses!!

Bent,  you've probably stated them in the past but What are your views on the qb situation, how would you handle it going into the off season /season?

Draft?  free agent?  all in on Geno with capable backup? training camp battle?  etc..

(also, would u be for bringing in Matt Cassel or is he as bad as my man Brendan ssays )

Does anyone one think Aaron Donald could play olb for us? He's more athletic then coples. I don't think we'll draft him but I think he'll be a great player.

Awe No!

His personal life, as any athletes, has nothing to do with his performance on the field

i have nothiong against Michael Vick he has paid his debt by the time he has served. On that note I do not believe he would be a good option for a back up he is injured too much and I do not believe the NYC media would be to kind as they never are anyway to any athlete with a past....

Rob R
Rob R

as a season ticket holder, if vick is on the team i will not attend a single game, I am sorry, he may have paid his debt and all that but I still have the choice to not agree with employing him, even besides the obvious the circus and attention he would bring would be tebow all over, and we all know how that ended up

For those of ya downing Vick I'd love to hear who ya feel is a viable option other than Vick.

Please don't mention McClown as I just ate my dinner.

Cousins isn't a option.

THERE IS NO ONE ELSE - THRU FA OR DA DRAFT

I LOVE Dogs...love them . I forgive Vick and believe he deserves a second chance. I'd be happy with Vick or mccown but we need one of those guys

I don't dislike the idea as much as some. Just please bring in a QB who can hold down the fort if Smith gets dinged up or can save a game if Smith's is having a really bad day.  If the Jets do end up bringing Vick in I have to believe MM - who knows him as well as anyone - believes he can fit that bill.

As a football move this seems like a significant upgrade over McCown, Garrard or Sanchez and of the free agent QB market he seems the best option currently available to actually push Smith or take over if needed. No?

Vick did some very terrible and inhumane things to dogs. I believe he paid his debt to society. EVERY human being deserves a second chance, forgiveness, redemption and all that. I have forgiven him, and I love and respect all God's creatures. Enough already with judging him on his past. Judge him as backup/ competition to Geno and leave it at that.

No way. injury waiting to happen plus he's not good, plus the whole dog thing...  plus the whole waste of money thing..

We are two cuts away from the completion of our image change. No need for this..plus he's not good....

I hope not, he sucks and can't throw straight. All he does is gets hurt. Signing him is a step backwards

@jake100  We don't really know what the Idzik way is when he can actually afford elite talent. He bargain binned it last year because he had no choice, and proved he's capable of finding useful talent on the trash heap, but until we see him play out this year, I'm not sure we can say what he is/isn't yet.

Brendan
Brendan

@jake100  Joey, the bit about the drops isn't true. Jones has been 24th ('13), 18th ('12) and 12th ('11) in catch rate for WR's recently.

@kniff  Swap Verner in for Byrd and good god almighty.

Why settle for Tate. Go after Graham. Not so sure Cro is going to agree to play for as cheap as some think.

Come on Bob-O!   You mutts have to forgive Vick!

@Rob R  The main difference between Vick and Tebow is: Vick can play QB. Tebow couldn't.

I could have lived with the Tebow hype if he could actually play, but he sucked.

Pat d

If Carr is there at 18 he is a better option than Vick. Geno would be the backup in that scenario.

@RCBennett  You're probably right, but the Tim Tebow trade made some sense as a football move...

@RCBennett

McCown on a 2 year deal would be a much better option imo.

no shots but everyone does not deserve a second chance, vick does, but rapists ,padaphiles etc do not..

not the place for this but I can't stand when people make blanket statements like that.

Vick isn't worth the money, or roster spot, regardless of his past. if he comes @ the min. I'll take it.

You are right. Not the place and it came out wrong. I'm just tired of people saying they won't be Jet fans anymore if Vick is signed. C'mon!

@a57se @Disgruntled Jets Fan  I threw this one up there, not Bassett.  Thought it reasonable enough to throw up the most recent speculation about a possible move without rehashing the ins and outs of that move, especially on a quiet news day.

I didn't have anything to do with SNY tweeting it out, but if there are irrelevant reply tweets appearing in the comments they'll be deleted anyway.

Brendan
Brendan

@jake100  Every move of his will be calculated, and I highly doubt he rushes into anything out of emotion or panic, I agree there. But I think when you have ~$50+ million to spend, that could change things. I still think he'll make sure the team has easy-out clauses and is getting a value, but I foresee him spending some of that cash on top talent. To some degree he has to, once they make those cuts, because they'll need to spend a pretty penny to get to the minimum cap.

Brendan
Brendan

@jake100 I'd give it three weeks before Jets fans started with the Cotchery comparisons, if it took them that long.

Brendan
Brendan

@jake100 I don't know how you can quantify something like "he benefit more than his teammates from their elite QB," so I can't really argue that.

But the key catches thing isn't true. He's consistently making tough catches in the middle 1/3 of the field for first downs. Teams need a player like Jones. I'm not saying it has to be Jones, but he's proven, he's tough and he's a good all-around player. The comment about Jones might pricing himself off the Jets' radar is potentially true, with the higher cap and top level guys being signed already, but if he's available and reasonably priced the Jets have to give him a look. They're not writing off 2014 like some fans are, and Jones is a perfect glue guy for a young receiving group.

@Joseph Koll

I understand completely why some people would want to stop being fans.  I myself would struggle with this signing a great deal.  It's true other players had done some terrible things.  Ray Lewis got in a fight and probably murdered two people, but what Vick did is different.  He inflicted untold pain for no reason other than entertainment.  I get that dog fighting is cultural, but what Vick did goes far beyond just dog fighting.  Any grown man who participates in such behavior is broken in my opinion.  I don't buy the second chance stuff.  The guy went to a publicity firm and started filming a documentary about his comeback before he even left prison.  Only 32 people on the planet get to be starting NFL QBs at any given time.  Does one of them really need to be a person who set animals on fire?

At some level I understand this from a football perspective, but ultimately football is just a game.  Vick's actions were some of the most abhorrent and unsettling behaviors I've ever read about.  Cheering for such a man would be difficult for me, as I imagine it would be for many people who want to set a good example for their children.

Definitely agree with u there, signing Vick shouldn't make someone stop being a fan, at least it won't make me stop.

2008 was really exciting and although they overpaid, it did solidify the team. I'm dying for some excitement but not at the expense of the future. Thank you.

Bent

@Joseph Koll  Well, they did make a bit of a splash in 2008 (Pace, Faneca, Jenkins via trade), so that's something which is not outside of organizational philosophy.

I completely agree with your last two sentences.  It seems like they have to make some kind of a big signing.

Joseph Koll
Joseph Koll

Bent,

What do you think the odds are that the Jets make at least one BIG SPLASH FA signing? It's not the smartest move to overpay in the FA market but sometimes it might be worth it. It seems like we have too much cap space not to throw money around on 1 or 2 guys. Idzik is hard to figure out though. Thanks.
