Report: Jets and Vick hit ‘roadblock’

The Jets were interested in Mike Vick, but according to Kim Jones on NFL Network’s Around the League sides seem to be stuck right now which will force both sides to walk away from the deal … at least for a little while.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

As we expected, right now Vick is looking for what looks like an almost guarantee that he can start and so far no team in the league is willing to give him that.  While the money might be right, Vick is in no rush to make a decision now that no clear path to a starting role outside of Oakland exists for him.

Vick likely isn’t in a rush to sign with a team just to be stuck as a backup.  If he’s going to be a backup, he might rather just go play for the Eagles.  At this point Vick might even be in a position to hang tight until closer to training camp to pick a team he thinks offers him the best chance to play in 2014.

Why all the hate for Vick ???? He will be an upgrade over what we have now

This was was best news I heard yesterday. Vick should go to the Raiders. It's a match made in Al Davis heaven, although that's probably not where he ended up.

Can someone clear this up for me, I thought we had 11 or 12 picks and now i see on nfl draft tracker we have 8.

Love it, Idzik is consistent . He's just not going to overpay . The start of FA is like a Christmas sale at k-mart where people mob the stores almost kill each other while the true value is waiting until after Christmas sales.

So, it's Day 2.  No reason to go all nuts and start a "FIRE IDZIK" petition.  Patience is the name of the game.

*Is it disappointing to lose out on Verner and Davis?  Sure.

*Does it suck losing a player in Howard that the Jets have spent time developing and might still be ascending?  Yes.

*Would we have liked them to sign one of the top FA RG's at least with losing Howard?  Yes.

But...let's keep the doom and gloom in perspective.

*The contract for Davis was too steep to pay.  Verner, not so much, but that's there valuation of him.  Still disappointing.  Talib's contract was ridiculous, though.  Maybe that's who the Jets were actually going after.  There is also still a big name CB that's going to be availa....ahh, forget it.

*Howard left for 6M per year, which I think most of us would have accepted his worth was at.  There are still very good options left and might be better than Howard (at least according to PFF), but cost less.  Breno or Strief

*The money being doled out to the OL was ridiculous.  Colon's still the fallback option.

*One of our biggest weaknesses was on offense...no big FA WR signed yesterday.  Their cost might not be as big as thought.  Decker at 7M/yr is acceptable (at least to me).  Tate's out there.  And of course, Ted Ginn Jr!

*We did sign Folk.  Sexy signing, amiright?!

So, let's realize that Idzik and this front office is very methodical in its approach to bringing in players. I thought last year was just related to our cap situation.  Well, it's a wakeup call that that's just the way it will be with him as the GM.  Let's get used to it.

All that said, I'm ready for a freaking fast..err, who are we kidding...another slow FA day 2.

I thought this was all about competition and that everyone would be competing for starting jobs.  did they tell Vick something other than thatit was an even competition, if so what a bunch of hypocrites tese folks are, is Idzik protecting his QB Smith the way Tanny did with Sanchez?

Any money we give to decker will be a better contract than we gave to santonio

@greggreen  That's because they haven't given out compensatory picks yet. That'll happen in the coming weeks, and you'll see that number increase by 3, maybe four.

@johnnyl65 And the best sales are on Black Friday!

Yeah, I don't know the analogy for that though.

@Wilkershakes  I'd agree with pretty much all of that. My main disappointment is not being able to snaffle a decent G to replace Colon and how reasonable Verner's contract seems given the rest of the market.

@jake100

I'm guessing maybe hasn't been giving much of a chance . As of late and just maybe?

Brendan
Brendan

@jake100  What have you been reading? Because in 2012 the Seahawks had the #1 ranked rushing ypc off the RT in the NFL. Breno started every game there that season.

He's nothing special, but he's definite a legitimate starter.

ukjetsfan
ukjetsfan

@jake100  I'm not convince either, but I still think he's a really good addition if the price is right. Where's your ceiling for him? Say $30m over 4yrs?

Brendan
Brendan

@Bernard Mclaughlin  Yes, the told Vick he wouldn't be guaranteed a starting spot, which would be eliminating a competition at the QB position. So, they stayed true to their word, he didn't like that.

@Wilkershakes @johnnyl65  Actually no there is not, ciber Monday has better deals.

Wilkershakes
Wilkershakes

@ukjetsfan @WilkershakesWe have to consider Colon to replace Colon.  It's a risk considering his torn bicep and injury history, but it is a plus to provide continuity and he played suitably at the position.  If Winters improves then Mangold/Colon should perform better.  Plus they drafted OL to develop them (similar to Howard even though he was signed off the practice squad).  No reason to spend big money for a younger RG in FA if they believe those players will step into those roles in a year or two.

ukjetsfan

@Wilkershakes  CB market still has potential, WR market hasn't moved at all really, QB situation is the same as ever, etc etc...

Roll on a day two signing though. Just to keep us all interested!!

ukjetsfan
ukjetsfan

@Brendan @jake100  Agree that he would be ok, same with Strief really. Feel like it makes who we get in at RG so much more important though

Bernard Mclaughlin
Bernard Mclaughlin

@Brendan @Bernard Mclaughlin If that's the case, then I stand corrected .  it then makes signing Vick at all a bad decision to have a backup resentful and wanting to start. if he has confidence in his own ability then it doesn't matter.

But how are you sure that's what happened or did Vicks folks not believe they would be getting a fair shot?

@Peter Whelan  I already wrote tha,t my ciber Monday response that the sale that follows the supposed big sale is always where the value is.

Wilkershakes
Wilkershakes

@johnnyl65 @WilkershakesSo cyber Monday is like mid-free agency, Pre-Christmas sale is the start of free agency, and Black Friday is like the salary cut signings.  Got it.

Actually the best deals on EVERYTHING, not just a few select items, comes in January. The after Christmas bargains.

@Wilkershakes @greggreen @Brendan  I will say that its still early. I will try and keep a level head for the next few days and overall try and judge this offseason when its over. Its just difficult at this time

Wilkershakes
Wilkershakes

@greggreen @Wilkershakes@BrendanI know what you're saying, but I do trust this defense and any defense really with Rex as the coach.  Plus let's say we go and get Ware...that right there improves the secondary at the same time.

Again, I know what you're saying, and I'm just trying to be optimist here.

greggreen

@Wilkershakes @greggreen @Brendan  Last year we were left with a lot of holes but i was ok with it because we were saving money for this offseason. If we repeat last years offseason we are in trouble

greggreen
greggreen

@Brendan @greggreen  Mid tier then. Id be ok with Munnerlyn. But i think cro is done. and browner size worries me that be will break down in his 30s, dont know much about brown

Wilkershakes
Wilkershakes

@greggreen @BrendanThere are plenty of FA's available to fill the holes and still draft BPA.  That's what this management office did last year.

Brendan
Brendan

@greggreen None of those players I just listed are "lower tier." They're all starter-quality.

greggreen
greggreen

@Brendan @greggreen  Im gonna disagree with you on cromarti. also how are you supposed to build a team if you keep signing older lower tear free agents. If you go into the draft with glaring holes you might end up drafting for need and not PPA. Which leads to problems

Brendan
Brendan

@greggreen Everyone can't be a "long term solution" even though I disagree with that assessment of this CB class. Browner, Cro, Brown, Munnerlyn (who I left off originally) all have plenty of years left in the league.

Brendan
Brendan

@greggreen Revis, Carlos Rogers, Browner, Tarell Brown, Cromartie. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few names, too.

Brendan
Brendan

@jake100 He's capable, which is more than you can say about many starting RT's in football.

People still forget that there are 32 starting RT spots and only like 20-25 actually good, starting-caliber RT's. If you can get one, even if it's one of the flawed ones, you should try.

ukjetsfan
ukjetsfan

@BrendanYeah RT is always the priority. I know we joke about Campbell and Aboushi, but it's so difficult to get a read on how real their prospects are given they were never played last year. Have we had any word on opinions in recent months?

Brendan
Brendan

@ukjetsfan I have no idea, to be honest. None of those outcomes would surprise me. I could see them waiting around, keeping tabs on Colon and signing him post-draft. I could see them finding another cheap veteran option like they did with Peterman, too. I'd be concentrating on RT if I were them, also.

ukjetsfan
ukjetsfan

@Brendan @ukjetsfan  Can;t argue with that logic I guess. Do you think we leave it at that, or look to pick up a RG in FA prior to waiting for Colon? Or do we draft in the mid rounds to groom a youngster?

Brendan
Brendan

@ukjetsfan I think I'd prefer Giacomini to Strief, but either would suffice. And neither was worse than Howard last year, so the RG situation should be equal to last year's in terms of degree of difficulty, if not easier.

I think more hinges on Winters develop than on the RG.

I'm still holding that spot for Colon, to be honest. He wants to be here, he'll be cheap, he won't eat up space in the future...sign Breno and pair him with Colon and you're looking at one mean right side.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bernard Mclaughlin I agree, if that's Vick's mindset you shouldn't bring him in.

And I'm basing this on the tweet above.
