According to TMZ Sports, Jets rookie WR Quincy Enunwa was arrested for assault after a fight in a New Jersey hotel.
“It’s a legal matter,” Enunwa said after practice on Tuesday (Martin, Sept. 3).
Enunwa, currently on the team’s practice squad, was reportedly arrested and released on Sunday.
“We’re told the alleged victim suffered minor injuries and did not need to go to the hospital. Cops have not revealed the ID of the other person involved or explained why the two were fighting in the first place,” TMZ reported.
Rex Ryan said he aware of the legal matter, but will not comment on it (Walder, Sept. 3).
Update, 11:43 p.m.: It’s unclear if the Jets were aware of Enunwa’s arrest when they released him Monday or when they signed him to the practice squad on Sunday (NJ.com, Sept. 3).
The team’s handling of the matter — which reportedly involved Enunwa’s girlfriend — is likely to be scrutinized given the league’s new, stronger penalties for domestic violence.
