Rex: Geno ‘head and shoulders’ above last year, all players conditioned

Geno Smith is already “head and shoulders” above where he was last year, Rex Ryan said as he arrived to camp on Wednesday (Waszak, July 23).

Still, Ryan wouldn’t put a timetable on when he would announce who would be the starting quarterback.

Ryan said this is the best QB situation he’s had since he’s been here. This is Rex’s sixth season as head coach of the Jets.

Ryan also said that all players have passed conditioning tests. The reason Willie Colon and Antwan Barnes were both placed on the active/physically unable to perform list earlier was just so the Jets could be “smart with them.”

Also as I stated on the other thread Colon is likely to be off the PUP very soon.  According to Rex he evn passed his conditioning test.

Can all the Colon is Mr. Glass stuff cease for a moment.

Ya think???? Rex had the Suckchize and Timmy boy..........Now he has Vick....

Funny how Rex talks up Geno....Give it a break already....Geno sucked last year.....At least wait until he plays a few good games before you start slobbering all over him......Geeeezz (I like Geno....but I'm not gonna talk him up prematurely)

@bradysucks If he was so terrible last year (and at times he was, but going by your comment you'd think he was 100% of the time), then being head and shoulders above there a) shouldn't be difficult and b) shouldn't be a huge compliment. Geno had to be head and shoulders above where he was last year or he'd have no shot at starting. This is basically Rex confirming that Geno is where he needs to be.

The fact that he said he isn't ready to name a starter in the next breath should also show you that he's not slobbering over anything.

@tsjc68 The rotation is getting crowded with all these prospects teams should have neeeeeever traded the Mets. Wheeler and Syndergaard (and d'Arneau) for Beltran (who was leaving anyway), Dickey (never was going to keep that level of production), and Josh "I suck in every conceivable measure" Thole. I'll take another trade in line with those, please.

Rex did the same thing with Sanchez except then it was Rex and Sanchez joined at the hip...now he can't name a starter but Geno is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

Number of times Rex Ryan said "Geno Smith played well last year during the season where he had 12 touchdowns and 21 turnovers": zero

Praising the progress a guy made during the offseason is not identical to "slobbering all over him".

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks No, 18 TD's, 25 TO's (you ignored rushing TD's and fumbles)

And you ignored my entire post. Rex isn't slobbering over anything, and Geno didn't suck for an entire season.

Rex, Marty, David Lee, Geno's teammates who were here last year have all given Geno these compliments. Maybe, and I know this is crazy to even consider for you, but maybe Geno actually is a much improved QB than the rookie who showed up to TC last year? That's not even that hard to do, the fact that you're acting like Rex just called him a future HOFer is just weird.

Sounds like the perfect time for you to pull a "Let's flip Yangervis Solarte, our version of Bartolo Colon 'found money' and one of our fireballing pitching prospects who probably only tops out as a moderately successful reliever because his secondary stuff is non-elite for the steady production of Chase Headley".

For all we know Geno regressed.... How can anybody praise his progress yet? They haven't played ANY games? Rex did this same crap with Suckchez every year......It's annoying to listen to and it doesn't help Geno either

jaygo

@Brendan @jaygo I have never seen anything like this.  It's officially "cross country" racing.  And this is France, not some third world country.  This was making the rounds as we had the first Steeplechase Race of the season at Saratoga today.

Crazy, just plain crazy.

Brendan
Brendan

@juunit But if you're going all-in with a rebuild holding on to a 37 year old knuckleballer instead of flipping him for your future catcher and a future SP is a no-brainer. And the fact that that SP might turn into a frontline starter makes that a lopsided trade. Thor has to pan out, obviously, but if he does Sandy gets a bigprops.

Brendan
Brendan

@tsjc68 Headley will benefit mightily from going from Petco to Yankee Stadium.

tsjc68

@bradysucks

For all we know Geno regressed...

You're absolutely right, for all we know, Geno regressed.  Here's the thing, though:  Rex Ryan, Marty Mornhinweg, David Lee, and the numerous members of the Jets team who have seen him every day in minicamps and OTAs and workouts and practices are not "we".  They are "they".

And "they", to a man, have ALL said he's progressed, not regressed.  And again, unlike "we", "they" get to see him every single day during workouts and film sessions and practices and drills and OTAs and camps.  So, yeah, their word might be a bit more influential than your supposition that "maybe he actually regressed".

How can anybody praise his progress yet? They haven't played ANY games?

By watching him in all the non-game events that happen during the year, and noticing how his command of the offense/playbook/huddle has increased exponentially.

You can progress between tests even when not being tested, you know.

Rex did this same crap with Suckchez every year...

Which is why it's not proof, just evidence.

It's annoying to listen to and it doesn't help Geno either

It's only annoying to listen to you pooh-pooh it, tbh.

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks Because they've had mini camp, OTAs, offseason workouts, film studies and so on.

They had all of this last year, so...compared to how he performed in those same practices, he's much better this year. How is this difficult to grasp? It's not a riddle. Geno has a baseline from his rookie year, and is outperforming it thus far, as he should.

juunit
juunit

@Brendan @juunit

Oh, yeah. Getting him on top of d'Arnaud definitely makes it a great deal, even if d'Arnaud doesn't pan out.

I just was pretty opposed to it because Dickey was my favorite player, knuckleball pitchers can easily pitch into their 40's and we already had Plawecki pla-wrecking it in the minors, so a catcher wasn't really the biggest need. Thor is what makes the deal acceptable for me, assuming he stops sucking ass.

Brendan

@a57se That only works when Google will turn up the requested information.

I just don't think Rex's track record with the offense since he's been a Jet makes anything he says about anybody on offense credible......His offenses the past few years have been a national disaster (and they are Rex's offenses because Rex is the HEAD COACH and is responsible for the ENTIRE TEAM).....

I wish Rex would shut up and let the players play......If Rex talks up anything it should be his defense......His track record with offense should arguably get him FIRED.....and let me be clear (I DO NOT want Rex fired.....but I get why some people do)

I KNOW that YOU know pre-season means NOTHING.....

If Pre-season means something than Matt Simms is freakin awesome....He was great when he played last pre-season...

I'm rooting for Geno but I'm not gonna over hype the kid or make like he is so much better now than last year until I SEE IT when the season starts.......REX can BLAB all he wants.....means nothing

Brendan
Brendan

@juunit I think he'll be fine, he's been trying to work on his breaking pitches. His BB/9 and HR/9 are both down, but his BABIP is freaking .375! Hopefully it balances out the rest of the way.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@bradysucks @tsjc68

So, the fact that Rex Ryan, who has coached against (and flustered) the best quarterbacks in NFL history for about 20 years now never had a good QB himself means that he's unqualified to speak about how good a QB is or is not or how much a QB has or has not improved when he sees that QB in practices, games, and on film, up close and personal?

Gotcha.  That makes perfect sense, Bradysucks.  You nailed it.

Brendan

"I KNOW that YOU know pre-season means NOTHING....."

Um...this is completely untrue. I don't know this at all.

"If Pre-season means something than Matt Simms is freakin awesome....He was great when he played last pre-season..."

Okay, let me rephrase...preseason with context matters.

"I'm rooting for Geno but I'm not gonna over hype the kid or make like he is so much better now than last year until I SEE IT when the season starts.......REX can BLAB all he wants.....means nothing"

Saying "2nd year Geno is a lot better than Rookie Geno at this point" isn't an insane comment. It's not undue praise. It's an observation that everyone working with the guy has made this offseason. Why? Because he is! He is a better QB than the rookie who was swimming in his playbook, showed up with happy feet and couldn't drop back consistently from under center.

Just because you haven't been present for all these workouts doesn't mean you get to call out Rex's comments as BS. They've been there, people have been talking about it for weeks. Geno hasn't shown us he's progressed as an in-game QB, but he's shown that he has progressed as a practice QB and in his preparation. That is relevant.

juunit
juunit

@Brendan @juunit

Never liked those "luck" stats. They completely ignore the velocity of the ball being put into play. A hot hitter will make better contact, hitting the ball faster, giving fielders less time to make a play. Ditto for a struggling pitcher, the ball will get hit harder and find the holes more easily.

Working on his stuff is perfectly fine. He does need to start getting outs though. His ERA is getting close to 6, isn't it? That's Ollie territory.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se To prove a point. You said something, I asked you to prove it, and you can't.

bradysucks

@tsjc68 @bradysucks

No you are missing the point......The point is Rex Ryan has coached some teams in NY that have been some of the worst offenses I've seen in 35 years as a Jets fan.......He is lucky to have a job.

Rex has a job because he is such a good guy, and we all know he is a Jets fan as well as a good defensive coach (and the players love him)......This doesn't change the fact that he is talking up  Geno prematurely..........I appreciate the way you SPIN things tsjc68 but it doesn't change the fact that Rex is drooling over Geno and  a team that has yet to do ANYTHING

harold

@tsjc68 @bradysucks

Also as much as we all say Sanchez was bad overall (and he was).

He did progress from his 1st to 2nd year.  If Geno progresses slightly more than that he becomes a top 16-20 QB in the NFL in his second season.

This would likely be enough to put us in the playoffs.

Saying "Geno's much improved over last year" isn't "slobbering over the dude. It's just not.

Rex may have prematurely fawned over Sanchez (to their mutual detriment) but he's doing a better job of not doing it with Geno as well. He is allowed to praise progress where it exists, though, which is all he's doing here.

juunit
juunit

@Brendan @juunit

I really thought he'd be better. Even thought he should've had a real shot to make the team in spring training because he's always had good control, low walks. Hopefully they give him a shot in September regardless, to get his feet wet. Maybe he can pull a Harvey.
