Rookie CB Dexter McDougle taking reps with first teamers

Since Jets starting cornerback Dimitri Patterson is taking it easy in practice after a rough game Thursday night, rookie Dexter McDougle was asked to work with the first team some over the weekend, according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

The Jets coach said he is impressed with the rookie cornerback enough to have him taking all the first-team snaps Saturday in practice. Ryan admitted the third-round pick from Maryland came into camp a little overweight, but said once he gets into NFL shape, he has “a heck of a chance.’’

[...]

The 5-foot-10 McDougle is listed at 195 pounds, with Ryan clearly intent on melting off a few of those.

[...]

“We’ll see where Dimitri is physically. But I expect [McDougle] to get a lot of opportunities,’’ Ryan said.

“I’ve been kidding him, I said, “43, I think he thought he was a running back.” He means well. He works his butt off. We’ve just got to get him down a little bit more. He came in a little heavy. Sometimes guys do that. They think, ‘It’s the NFL, they are big guys, I’ve got to get a little bigger.’ That’s not the case. You’ve got to be able to run and be in great shape. But I’ve been impressed with him. For a guy that only played three games last year, I’ve really been impressed.’’

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Despite whatever the Jets are saying publicly about Dimitri Patterson, the man has played on seven teams in 10 years for a reason.  He’s good enough to make a roster, but doesn’t seem to make enough of a positive impact to stick around for long.

If the Jets play Patterson as their starter this season, it will be with a wary eye and having hedged their bets with Darrin Walls, Ellis Lankster and McDougle.

Playing cornerback as a rookie can be one of the hardest jobs in the NFL.  McDougle might not have been on this team for long, but a look at the team’s depth chart validates the team’s high opinion of him; that and the third round draft pick.

I was impressed with McDougle at camp and came away convinced that he can be a factor on this team, what I am unsure about is when and for how much work early.  It’s clear to me that the Jets will do their best to buy a player like McDougle as much time as possible, but if Patterson can’t stay healthy or can’t respond, his time might come sooner than expected.

Idzik at least addressed CB and WR in the draft and free agency...

Oh wait...

Enter Jets apologists (this is your cue)....lol (sarcasm)

See prior posts about using all 12 draft picks and not adding better depth in free agency...(smh)

Dear bradysucks,

We were wrong about Johnny Manziel who looked awesome in his first pre-season game for the Browns. You wanted to draft him so the Jets would have a franchise QB but we told you how wrong you were. We are often wrong but act like we know football. We were wrong about Vlad, Hill, and Sanchez and you were correct just like you were correct about Manziel who is already better than Geno.

Sincerely,

Tsjc68 & Brendan

patterson should be cut immediately. he can't cover a sewage hole. what is disappointing is that the giants appear to have a much better draft haul with half the picks. two players they drafted in the 6th round are better than anyone the jets have in their whole draft. that being CB jackson form the dame of notre and dennard LB from usc. maybe the jets should start drafting players from prominent schools instead of east missouri state and east central iowa state.

McDougle leaving the field with trainers limping. Walls takes over with first team.

Brandin Cooks, DAT, Jon Brown, (didn't see Dri yesterday but heard he was OK)...looking like we missed a few opportunities.

As for starter opposite D-Mill, Walls is the guy.

As soon as McDougal was announced as their pick in round 3 I saw just about every pundit question that pick as a reach. No question the kid has athletic ability and i think at some point he may turn out to be really good.I'm skeptical to say the least that that point is now? He was considered by some to be a poor scheme fit for the Jets as apparently  Maryland played him mostly in off coverage rather than press coverage and they also played a lot of zone. Now, i honestly don't know if that is true or not as I haven't been able to find much film on him as Maryland was not featured on T.V much and again, he only played three games. I remember McShay saying he projected him much later like the 5th or 6th round as did Gil Brandt Mike Mayock and Daniel Jeramyah, possibly because he missed so much time?

Decker not in team drills and Ivory just ran over to the trainer area. Salas looking good!

Start giving Lankster and Walls first team reps, no way do I want a raw rookie who was out most of his last college year and a 3rd round pick to boot. Even the top pedigree CBs struggle most of the time making the transition in their first year. I like Lankster and also think Walls could hold the fort, give them some serious reps!

maybe late in the season he'll get the idea of how CB is played in the NFL, don't expect too much and be pleasantly surprised if he can contribute early, maybe use him in packages to get his feet wet

Logan Thomas looked pretty good last night for the Cards...as did John Brown, the WR some of us really liked.

@levi Time to move Snacks back to his natural position: CB.

@bradysucks

Manziel posted modest numbers against backups and didn't even get his team in the end zone.  Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge and Brett Ratliff all had preseason campaigns where they posted QB ratings of over 100 against backups.  He's not even emulating them yet.

PS- Sanchez outplayed Manziel by a mile yesterday.

@Ron Alexander

Gil Brandt actually had him rated as a 3rd rounder after he showed he was healthy at his pro day.  Also insiders were saying other teams were looking at him around this same point in the draft.

The Sanchise also looked pretty good running Chip Kelly's offense though no one is gonna bite on his QB keeper fakes!

He was actually victimized by a few drops as well...

@Marvel_ @UncleJoesJetFarm Too early for that, but it looks like they wont make an immediate impact by the looks of things, but that doesn't mean that eventually that they wont turn out solid.

heard Manziel got hit hard a couple times, his frame isn't built for that.. has the body of a young teenager.
