Roster News: Jets claim C Scott Wedige

Adam Caplan reports via Twitter that the Jets have claimed former Arizona Cardinals center Scott Wedige on waivers.

Wedige was recently released by the Cardinals, with whom he saw action on offense during two games in his rookie season last year. A teammate of RB Chad Spann for three years, Wedige went undrafted in 2012 and the Jets are his fourth NFL team.

Wedige takes the place of WR Titus Ryan on the active roster. Caplan reports that Ryan left the team and the Jets therefore were given a roster exemption.

After Dalton Freeman – an undrafted rookie free agent who had been praised by Rex Ryan – injured his ankle, the Jets have been looking to improve their depth at the center position. They recently added Erik Cook and have also been using Stephen Peterman there in practice. On the other hand, last year’s backup Caleb Schlauderaff got most of his reps at guard on Saturday, so he might be falling out of favor in terms of being an option for that role.
