Roster News: Jets cut Nick Taylor

The Jets have released DB Nick Taylor according to the NFL’s transaction wire. They had to make a cut by 4pm ET, because the eight undrafted free agents they signed yesterday put them one over the roster limit of 90.

The Jets had signed Taylor in January.

Most seem to think the Jets had a great draft. Most seem to think Hill will be the WR opposite of Decker.

I'm not sure if these two things go hand in hand.

Hopefully Smith or Boyd plays lights out and Vick ends up on the bench.

Vick won't have to carry the team and run allday like he did in philly plus our oline is better than Philly's and the bonus is seeing MR.Pryor level a patriot lol

Fellas we are OK trust vick should be out geno and I know Vick would do some things with decker , Amaro ,Johnson and kerley watch can't wait

I like where this team is headed. They have players that exude toughness and discipline, and that aren't afraid to hit.

I'm projecting these starters as a bold prediction:

QB G Smith

RB1 Ivory

RB2 Johnson

WR1 Decker

WR2 Ford

Slot   Kerley/Saunders:  they will split reps

WR4 Hill/Evans:  They will split reps

CB1  Milliner

CB2  Wilson:  Promoted, because he finally made progress in offseason

Slot CB: Walls

CB4  Lankster

Dime McDougle

SS  Pryor

FS  Allen

Hill vs Evans

Walls vs Patterson

Ford vs Saunders

Bohannon  vs UDFA

George vs Mauga vs Cunningham

Boyd vs Simms

and more!!

Some great player v player matchups coming soon.. gonna be a wild camp

any others that might be fun to pay attention to?

(Not for a roster spot more for rank /depth chart positioning in many cases )

@Pat d Who are these people that think Hill will be on the team, much less start?

Kerley, and Nelson will rotate, with Kerley moving inside in what I think will be a base 3 wide.

That's if no one steps up between Saunders, and Evans

Evans had the best 10 yard split in the draft, at his size that should give him a great shot as the designated hot read target.

Decker, Evans, Kerley, Saunders, Amaro, and CJ should make getting the ball out quickly a lot easier for Geno.

Most people on this blog were upset the Jets tried to trade for Peyton Manning because they liked Mark Sanchez. Most people are usually wrong.

If Hill starts it will only be because the rookies haven't learned the offense yet or because Nelson regresses. It really doesn't even matter if Hill starts because he is going to get replaced unless he starts producing. The guy isn't durable. He has yet to make it through an NFL season healthy. His lack of production speaks for itself. Plenty of WR's will be in camp ready to eat Hill's lunch

Are you projecting Amaro gets cut in camp or there's just no room for a TE in the Jets offense?

@Pablo Bruno  I haven't done a lot of looking into the draft week because I'm dealing with finals, but I'd put the winner of a Saunders/Hill competition in the WR2 role (and Hill as winning), and have Ford, Evans and the other guy we drafted (Enemuwa? I haven't learned his name yet) in the WR4 competition.

The for CBs Wilson has a lock on Slot CB, with Patterson, Walls, or McDougle playing the outside CB2. Patterson starts the season, gets hurt, then McDougle comes in and finishes it is my guess.

I'm also thinking Landry starts instead of Pryor at first, but Pryor takes over at some point (after the bye?) and finishes the rest of the season. He'd be the one with the headset in his helmet (like Landry does now), so it'll take a little longer for him to get comfortable with the entire defense.

@Pablo Bruno  Ford in the WR2 spot is surprising, a lot of people don't think he makes the roster.

I don't think CB2 is a promotion from slot CB. It's just a different position with a similar name. Wilson is one of the best slot CBs in the league, and it wouldn't make sense to move him somewhere else. It's like someone saying that Welker hasn't made any progress since entering the league because he's never been anything other than a slot receiver.

@Pablo Bruno

Bold indeed!!

 No way Ford starts, Walls isn't equipped for the slot, and Wilson is comedy on the outside.

@Marvel  You think Nelson is in the mix with Ford/Saunders/Hill Evans is he Decker's backup?

@Steven Windeler @Pat d  Yeah, "most seem to think Hill will be the WR opposite of Decker" is just inaccurate.  Arguing that he might not be cut doesn't translate to "he should be starting".

@bradysucks

 Unless Hill found out he's near sighted, and got new glasses he should be released fairly early. I still can't understand what happened to the guy I saw on film in college.

Nelson is the fall back, and incumbent 2nd/3rd wide out depending on the defense.

Kerley is the #2 option.

Saunders reminds me a lot of Austin, and Geno is going to love having him, and CJ to show off his touch on no look screens. We haven't had a player that could run a screen, or a wheel route since Leon.

Amaro will really help keep those screens from being overwhelmed.

I think we'll see Saunders lined up in the backfield more than occasionally. At least they'll try that out a lot in camp.

Saunders is going to tilt the field with his punt returns. The guy is electrifying. I've yet to see him tackled be the first 2 guys. That will be a great thing to see after a couple of years of just praying we caught the punt.

@joemustgo  Pryor will get a few. Lets hope our CBs can start getting some picks this year too.

@Marvel @Pablo Bruno What is Peterson getting cut? Swap Pryor and Allen so aside from those 5 problems, and the fact we have no linemen, were good here.

@joemustgo

 I view Nelson a solid backup, not someone who will start across from Decker

@Francesco Bruno @Marvel  They don't really play the same position, I don't think. McDougle is more of an outside guy, and Wilson is really good in the slot.

Marvel

@Francesco Bruno

 Honestly, I think Wilson has a strangle hold on the slot CB role. McDougle probably being groomed for post Patterson life.

@levi  Or Pryor coming free on a blitz... Unfortunately, Brady is good at hitting the deck in self defense.

@joemustgo  Once Reed arrived the turnovers picked up. Hopefully thats a sign of a the difference a good safety can make on this team and it continues.

joemustgo

@levi @Dr. Jonathan Reefer @joemustgo  They were 28th in forced fumbles least year in addition to being 22nd in ints, so it's not just bad bounces. This is exactly what I hope Pryor brings: a contagious mentality to go after the ball after locking up the carrier.

tsjc68

@Pablo Bruno @__fense  He can impress, yes.

Question is, can he impress enough to hold off Jalen Saunders, because it might be an either/or for the two of them (and the team has many reasons to pick Saunders over Ford.)

Steven Windeler

@__fense @Francesco Bruno@Marvel

Yes it's really annoying hearing how small Dougie is all the time. Like one inch makes him a slot corner. He looks like he uses the sidelines very well in the film I've seen.

Bent
Bent moderator

@tsjc68 @Bent @Marvel  That's why it's so hard to pigeonhole a depth chart.  Pace and BT swapped places all the time and their backups (whether that be Westerman, Maybin, Gholston or JT) rotated in at both spots.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Bent @tsjc68 @Marvel  Sure, but Rex has often went with larger SAMs as well to add more run-stuffing and edge-funneling (not just Pace, but Adalius Thomas back in the day as well).

Bent
Bent moderator

@tsjc68 @Bent @Marvel  As a general rule, I'd expect the smaller of the two to be the SAM because that's the linebacker role if you consider their defense to be a variant 4-3 under.

And Cunningham probably would have been a SAM initially but don't forget he bulked up between 2011 and 2012.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Bent @tsjc68 @Marvel  Barnes does play the run fairly well despite being so undersized, so yeah, he could play some SAM (and yes, Cunningham could end up at RUSH, not that I think it matters because there's a super-slim chance he makes the team anyway).

Bent
Bent moderator

@tsjc68 @Marvel @Bent  Not bad.  Obviosuly DiMarco and Chappelear are only tryouts at this point.  I'd also put Cunningham as a RUSH in the base defense.

When they go to the nickel, I am expecting Barnes on one side and Coples on the other in a 4-2-5 to be one of the main looks they use, as it was in preseason last year before Coples got hurt, so I wonder if that might lead to Barnes being listed as a SAM (which is the role he played in SD that year he ended up starting several games and had double digit sacks).

It's an interesting one because sources told me Barnes has no real desire to start and is happy in a DPR role so that might impact where you'd list him.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Marvel @Bent  How I see it stacking up right now:

RUSH OLB: Coples, Barnes, Enemkpali, T.Davis

JACK ILB: D.Davis, George, Divitto, Dimarco

TED ILB: Harris, Bellore

SAM OLB: Pace, Reilly, McIntyre, Cunningham, Fugger, Thompson, Chappelear

Hope that helps.

Marvel

@Bent @Marvel

Oh ok.. George must feel pretty good about his chances, just gotta not wet the bed.

Bent
Bent moderator

@Marvel @Bent  The only other one is Steele DiVitto but essentially Rex already outlined his plans for both George and Bellore going forward so it sounds like they each have a spot penciled in.

@Simon Gribben FBs are overrated. If you can get an H-back that's fine, but if he can only run block he's just causing more traffic and taking up a roster spot. We could still use a blocking TE, unless Shelly can do it.
