Roster News: Jets Sign RB Jonathan Grimes, Trying Out Veteran CB

More shuffling the deckchairs on the titanic, or possible season-saving impact moves? Manish Mehta has the details:

I’ve been told that the Jets have signed RB Jonathan Grimes off the Texans practice squad

Manish also reports that they are bringing in veteran CB/KR Chris Carr for a tryout.

Analysis: The Jets had been keeping tabs on Grimes, on whom they put a conditional waiver claim at the end of August, which they withdrew when three of their other higher-priority claims were successful. Here’s what I wrote about Grimes at the time:

Grimes was an undrafted free agent who was also with the Texans, where of course they have one of the deepest stables of running backs in the NFL. He led the nation in all-purpose yards at William and Mary and runs a 4.53 forty, but didn’t make the Texans roster despite rushing for 170 yards and a touchdown (at 4.6 yards per carry) in preseason.

He will need to remain on the active roster for at least three weeks.

Carr went undrafted in 2005 and was a role player for the Raiders and Titans over this first four seasons, although he did make an impact as a kick returner. He emerged as a consistent starter for the Ravens over the last couple of years and earned himself a four year deal last year. However, he suffered an injury-riddled 2011 season and was let go. He is capable of playing in the slot.
