Roster news: Jets sign S Hardin to futures contract

It looks like the Jets have added another project to their ranks in the form of former Chicago Bears safety Brandon Hardin. Hardin himself tweeted the following:

Eric Allen has confirmed the signing on twitter.

Hardin is a 24-year old defensive back with great size (6-3, 217) and was a third round pick in the 2012 NFL draft. The Bears were taking a chance on Hardin, who missed the entire 2011 season with a shoulder injury, but his injury woes continued in the pros. In the 2012 preseason, Hardin suffered a scary neck injury that sidelined him for the season and this year he broke his scapula in preseason and was released with an injury settlement.

Hardin played at cornerback in 2010, but since being drafted by the Bears had been working as a free safety. He had 13 tackles and two passes defensed in six preseason games as a Bear.

He has good athleticism (4.43 forty time, 35.5 inch vertical and 124 inch broad jump at Oregon State’s pro day) so could be a low-risk high-reward pickup if he can get healthy.

If this guy can stay healthy, he can be a real find. But if he gets injured again in preseason, Idzik can't keep him on the roster

We're talking low risk, high reward potential so it's definitely worth a shot. The key here is that Idzik doesn't count him as a player when putting together his real FA and draft plans. The prudent thing is to sign these long shots, but go forward as if they don't exist. That way, the "worst" that can happen is you're deeper then expected if the guy stays healthy and blossoms.

I was really high on him coming out. I really wanted to look at him in the 5th or 6th round. He went much higher, but if healthy and that is a BIG IF, he is a solid prospect with rare movement skills and speed for guy his size.

Been injured a lot, but I recall him being a rather good player.

Oh no.....One of Idziks' boys at work garnered this observation:

"The Jets rep here beside me making literal notes on the asses of the players on the sideline."
