Round up of Jets-related news from Saturday

In case you missed it, here’s some reports from around the NFL on Saturday and how they affects the Jets.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

Having finished his meeting with the Jets, Rodgers-Cromartie will meet with the Giants today, as planned (Schefter).

Antonio Cromartie

While Cromartie and Patrick Peterson hinted last night that a deal between Cromartie and the Cardinals was imminent, a source says nothing is happening. (PFT).

Mark Sanchez

The Raiders are interested in signing Mark Sanchez (Gutierrez).

Brandon LaFell

Lafell signed with the New England Patriots on a three year, $11m deal (Schefter). The Jets had talks with LaFell’s camp, but never scheduled a visit (Mehta).

Usama Young

Safety Young resigned with the Raiders. The Jets had discussions with his camp but were never in play (Garafalo, Mehta).

Emanuel Sanders

Sanders is expected to sign with the Denver Broncos. The Jets were reportedly going to bring him in for a visit but never did. (Schefter, Mehta).

Julian Edelman

Edelman re-signed with the Jets’ divisional rival New England Patriots. There were no direct links between Edelman and the Jets. (Rapaport).

Brandon Browner

The Patriots also confirmed that they signed cornerback Browner. (Patriots.com). The Jets were reportedly interested. (Mehta, March 12th)

Aaron Berry

Finally, Jets UFA cornerback Berry is starting to draw interest from other teams. (Costello)

The NY Jets will always be the second best team in NY. The organization is moving very slow to get quality players. No the has bins are left on the market except a few. However, I don't expect the Jets t do anything for at least 25 more years. LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!

Aaron Berry han'st played in almost 3 years, who knows how good he is

I am sure this will draw some Ire from some of you out there but try and give it some thought before you excoriate me.

Golden Tate caught 64 balls for 898 yards and 5 TD's in 2013 for a team that only threw the ball 420 times with 267 completions.

Eric Decker caught 87 balls for 1288 yards and 11 TD's in 2013 for a team that threw the ball 675 times.with 461 completions.

If I 'just' prorate the numbers for Tate to equal the playing field (by equaling team completions) I get the following line for Tate:

110 receptions for 1540 yards and 9TD's. That is an impressive stat line.

Tate caught 24% of the balls completed by the Seahawks last season while Decker caught 18.8%.

Tate was targeted 23.3% of the time while Decker was targeted 20.3%.....meaning Tate was better at catching the ball than Decker. (Let me explain this comment, if you catch a higher percentage of the balls completed then the percentage you were targeted, that means you have a better catch rate and Tate clearly has that)

Since the stats basically even out (I an being conservative because Decker had better receiving options around him in Denver) if pro-rated, did we overpay for Decker? Tate got a deal for ~$6 mill APY while Decker got ~$7 million......

Watching Brandin Cooks highlights right now I really like this guy, and he's a killer in the red zone

It was funny seeing people try and pretend Brandon LaFell is a good player last night after he signed with the Pats. That guy stinks

jimjets

Uh yes Brendan bent et al....getting concerned. We need help and all the best players besides decker are getting hobbled up. And btw. The year we took LT and JT? We went to the AFC champ game. Guess maybe well resign Cro or get Carlos Rogers and miles Austin. Look out for us NE!

Teams like the Pats and Broncos are hitting FA's heavy because they are in a "win now "mode with aging QB's that have carried the team.  I'm starting to see the plan here, cautious signings of young players at positions of immediate need where we don't have potential replacements already on board. we needed an immediate RT so we got one, but we signed 3 OG?T last year who should be ready to start stepping up this year and next. We needed a sure thing WR and got one now we have the draft coming. we should be able to "bottom feed' after the draft and pick up depth, and if we still have a lot of money left we'll need it next year to solidify core and extend Wilk, Coples Richardson etc. I think Idzik is playing the long game here. buff and Miami should be weaker, we should be stronger with what we've picked up already. so I believe 10 wins is very achievable if we don't add much more that a good backup QB in FA and TE/receivers, OLB in draft.  2015 we should be ready for a run to the finish.

I don't understand why Idzik isn't going harder after James Jones......Asleep at the wheel...

Having said this......Cash is King

@a57se don't forget that Decker had good numbers with Tebow throwing him the ball too and was one of the better receivers even with Tebow

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se  I like the stats, but the variable you're not taking into account is that the fact the Seahawks run more means that there is an advantage when they do pass, because the defense is less likely to expect it.

I like Tate more than most and think he's closer to Decker than people gave him credit for.  At the same time, I thought he'd get 7-8m and that's what Decker got, so I'll take it.

Given an all-else-is-equal choice between the two, I'd choose Decker because of his size.

hazard2012
hazard2012

@a57se

Decker actually came cheaper than expected, and is a solid #2, receiver. It's a good signing, just as Tate would have been a good signing.  I'd put Jones in this same category, maybe even Sanders.   The key issue now is which other WR's & TE's will play beside Decker.   Still need game-changers, and more than one of them.   Good thing is that Idzik can find them in the draft.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se  No, the team did not overpay for Decker, who is basically paid the deal that Stevie Johnson is paid.

@Bernard Mclaughlin  So first we had the Rex apologists, and now the idzik apologists? Great! This is not the old NFL with no salary cap where you could stock pile talent like the Dallas Cowboys used to do.The K.C Chiefs and Carolina Panthers clearly proved that last season coming off poor season and becoming over night winners. There's no way your gonna convince me or anybody else here that if we lined up next season with J.Byrd at FS and A.Verner opposite Milliner and J Schwartz at one of the Guard positions that we would not be in a much better position to contend now! Building long term for the future is nonsense. Seattle is losing f/a's left and right just like other teams that win.These guys have between 4 and 12 years to make enough money to provide for their families for a life time so they go where the money is.By the time we secure enough talent through the draft to contend players like Mo Wilk and Big Snacks will be off seeking their fortunes elsewhere.You cannot build a winning team entirely through the draft.You need to bring in select talent through F/A and trades as well.

j3tsfan29
j3tsfan29

I agree on idziks philosophy however 10 wins seems like a stretch, you may wanna check the opponents we face this season. It will be rough.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bernard Mclaughlin  I'm glad you're back, Bernard. And I agree with your take on Idzik's "long game" philosophy, I'm actually very much behind the idea myself.

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks  How many other teams have you heard linked to Jones?

It was rumored that the Jets were interested and a visit was being scheduled...and then I haven't seen his name mentioned anywhere. Knowing what we know about Idzik, it's entirely possible Jones is coming in for a visit in the next few days and the team will announce a signing without us knowing diddly beforehand.

Bent

@a57se @MarshRandy  David Nelson put up similar numbers a couple of years ago.  61-658-5TDs.  Food for thought...

MarshRandy
MarshRandy

@a57se you can't have it both ways dude when you downtalk James Jones despite having 14 TDs a year ago and Decker for putting up ridic numbers. LaFell had every opportunity to be the #2 on a team with a great young QB and puts up those numbers, basically equaled by Ted Ginn. He's wack

Brendan
Brendan

@MPTG_Frank  They do, but that'll only be a couple million. They can cut someone to get more space to fit him in, but then they'll have no money for contingency.

Brendan
Brendan

@gusto  I don't think so, he had a pretty good year last year.

Bernard Mclaughlin
Bernard Mclaughlin

@Ron Alexander @Bernard Mclaughlin  seatle sucked and got better by taking the type of view of not looking for quick fixes. so did the 49ers. so did Denver once they got a solid base they looked to add the final pieces where needed. but they all had the one thing we are missing. A functional decent QB so it's all academic til we get that

a57se
a57se

@Ron Alexander

I am with you to a certain extent....if you look at the franchises that have had 'sustainable' success, the one thing they have in common is a HOF QB.....

NE and Indy had the longest post season streaks in the game. the rest of the teams have their ups and downs especially with the salary cap making it impossible to keep your squad together very long.

Bernard Mclaughlin
Bernard Mclaughlin

@j3tsfan29   looking at our schedule I believe this is totally doable.

Bills and Dolphins sweep=4 victories

Split with Pats                    1

Texans/jags/Titans            3

Steelers                              1

Rams                                 1              Easy no, but totally doable

Bernard Mclaughlin
Bernard Mclaughlin

@Brendan @Bernard Mclaughlin let me ask you,  do borderline receivers, like jones and Sanders want to come to us or are they looking for locations that have better QB's than us? if I,m a receiver I do not want to come to a place where the QB is still at the stage where he's throwing to the first option the majority of the times because he's slow on doing his reads.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

I hope so....

Jones/Decker/Kerley/Draft Pick WR (Cooks)/Nelson and then the Jets have a WR group that can legitimately compete with the better secondary's in the NFL......

I've heard NOTHING

gusto

I'm starting to believe it's best for the Jets to (once again) go defense in the 1st round of the draft and select Darqueze Dennard while signing James Jones. I wouldn't be upset with a receiving corps of Decker, Kerley, Jones, Hill, and a 2nd/3rd round pick, and I believe the investment in Dennard and Milliner to play with our D Line would pay off tremendously. I'd feel more comfortable with James Jones than DRC if he's asking for an unreasonable amount of money.

kniff
kniff

@Brendan @bradysucks  Signing Jones allows us major flexibility in the draft I would think... more of a BPA scenario, rather than going hard on O, or being tempted to trade up...

bradysucks
bradysucks

@tal8 @bradysucks

Jones and Decker together - would be terrific....

Look up how many TD's those 2 have scored over the past 2 years......These 2 score points....which is exactly what the Jets need....

Would be a Great one/two punch at WR for the Jets!

Ron Alexander
Ron Alexander

@a57se @MarshRandy  Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out what the heck is Idzik's plan? Is he saving the money to buy Woody Johnson a thank you present for hiring him? Betwen his very mediocre 1st draft and his inactivity during a free agency loaded with very talented players and more than enough cap money to make a statement to the league we sign one player of any significance?

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se You're really not going to explain why you're against veteran signings at the WR spot?

a57se
a57se

@MarshRandy

LaFell caught 16.7% of the passes Newton completed last season for 20% of the yards they gained through the air. If you prorate that to Denvers offense, He would have had 77 catches for 990 yards with about 8 TD's......nothing spectacular but better than anything we had last year.

I thought he might be a player to compete with Nelson and certainly wasn't looking at him as a no. 1.......just a cheap vet. who could contribute.

MarshRandy
MarshRandy

@Brendan @a57sewe can get out of Decker's deal after two years, I'm sure James Jones' deal will be even shorter due to his age. If the guys we draft turn out to be great we won't be hamstrung by vet contracts

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Well every time I've asked you to explain yourself, you refuse to. I just don't see the logic in that. I also want them to draft offense in the first 3 rounds (at least partially), but I want them to supplement those picks with veteran starters.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

You read my posts on this before, I don't need to explain myself again.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se You wanted to just draft WR's and rely on rookies at a position notorious for rough and slow transitions to the pro level?

a57se
a57se

@MarshRandy @a57se

Not trying my friend, I never said Jones or Decker weren't good players.I just didn't want us spending our money at that position. I wanted us to use Free Agency to fill the hole on defense and the O'line then go all Offense in the draft.

That is obviously not Idzik's plan........

MPTG_Frank
MPTG_Frank

My gut tells me that going through this Dog and Pony today with DRC, is probably just etiquette. "He's here, we said we'd meet him, so let's go through with it". It probably served a dual purpose to get Thurmond to sign quicker. Can't fathom them taking what they currently have in cap space, and committing it before they have their ducks in a row. Although I'd bet, they have a reworked deal in place with Eli already.

harold
harold

@gusto

The agents tell their clients I am going to get you this and then when they can't they try to drum up interest through the media.

DRC is a likely Jet unless the Browns or another team with cap space jumps in. I doubt the Giants get in this heavy at all.

gusto
gusto

@brendan

So then they won't be interested in DRC then. I guess that's good for us

Bent
Bent moderator

@Monty Granito @MarshRandy @Brendan  Spencer is visiting too.

If they can get these guys at their price, they'll find a way.  However, it does suggest that the chances of DRC getting a Godfather deal are perhaps slim.

@gusto  i like this plan and i definitely dont mind doing D in the first round... build a young defense and then supplement the offense via FAcy

bradysucks
bradysucks

@tal8

I like having a strong defense.....but we have not taken an offensive player in the 1st round since Sanchez back in 2009........and Mark is a bust,.....

We took Hill and Vlad in round 2.........not exactly good production

We need to rebuild the offense in the early rounds of this draft....We have 12 picks

tal8

@Brendan @bradysucks  Strangest things have happened. In a QB frenzy top 10 picks... Anything goes

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

agreed....

I am hoping we take Cooks......I  am assuming Evans, Ebron are gone by the time the Jets pick

tal8
tal8

@bradysucks @Brendan  We'll conclude that argument in a couple of weeks. These are just speculations. It all depends where our biggest needs are comes draft day. Right now they are CB/OLB/WR/TE/FS... At least a couple will be filled via FA.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

If they sign Jones.....I'd then hope they take Ebron in round 1.....

If they don't sign Jones I'd take a WR in round 1 (or Ebron) and a Wr in round 2 (or 3)

tal8
tal8

@bradysucks @tal8  I'm quoting my answer to you from a couple of lines up:

"It all depends on what our roster will look like comes draft day... If we are coming with a huge hole at CB... We will".

gusto
gusto

So if we miss out on DRC and Cro signs in Arizona but we get James Jones, you'd still prefer to take a wide receiver (which with Decker, Jones, and Kerley would be a position of strength) over a corner?

levi
levi

@tal8 @bradysucks  Im with Bradysucks on this one. Id just as soon roll with Lankster /Walls/ Berry at CB#2. We do need some Offense. But honestly I could see them drafting a CB at 18.

tal8
tal8

@gusto  If we miss on DRC... It might just be. I agree.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@tal8 @bradysucks

lol.....

whatever......We aren't drafting another CB in the 1st round.....Take that to the bank

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks So? If they get to 18 and Dennard or Gilbert is there and they have him with a top-7 grade on their board, they shouldn't take them because of the team's draft history? That doesn't really make sense.

I think if they sign DRC that will let the team weigh WR's as more important than CB's, which would influence their board, so they'd probably take a WR over a CB. But you saying they can't do it with this current roster because they've done it twice in the past four drafts isn't really fair.

gusto
gusto

Eric Decker, James Jones, Jeremy Kerley, Ed Dickson, Chris Ivory, Chris Johnson, and Jeff Cumberland in the hypothetical situation that would have us selecting Dennard or Gilbert in round 1 of the draft.

levi
levi

@gusto  Good point about Thomas. Ive been arguing that a good safety makes the secondary much better immediately. I think sherman is just plain good but it will be intersting to see how Browner and Thurmond do on different teams.

tal8
tal8

@bradysucks @tal8  Am I? We had one of the worst secondary in the NFL last season. Now, I  will not preach anything (Like u wanted last year to draft a OT and play him at TE because u are soooo obssesed with offense)... I do not know what our roster is going to be comes draft day. When I'll know? I'll tell u what I do want. If we do sign DRC... I want Ebron and the best WR avail at 49. If we don't? I want one of the best CBs in rd 1 or 2.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@tal8 @bradysucks

Our pass offense was worse than our 2ndary.....

Dude.....the Jets are not a balanced football team....The defense is light years ahead of the offense.....

You don''t draft defense every single f'in year early in the draft......Good teams are good on offense and defense and special teams.......just like the Seahawks who just won a superbowl.

The Ravens team with Trent Dilfer was one of the few exceptions

gusto
gusto

@levi,

DeAngelo Hall brought up a great point recently. He said that the Seahawks had a 5th round pick, a 4th round pick, and an ex CFL player as their top 3 corners on the roster. He said something about the Seahawks scheme (and Earl Thomas) makes it easier for them to have less heralded players and that they essentially plug and play over there. It wasn't to knock their talent, but I do wonder if guys like Thurmond and Browner will fail on new teams with different schemes.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@tal8 @bradysucks

You're wrong.....but please start preaching that we should draft another CB in round 1 ....by all means....

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks Dude, did the team not just sign the best WR on the market? If they sign Jones, do they really need to force an offense-first draft approach? No. You just draft the guy who you think will make the biggest impact on your team. If it's a future stud CB, then so be it. There are a bunch of WR and CB options later in the draft, that's the beauty of having 10+ in this draft. They aren't forced to pick any position in any round.

tal8
tal8

@bradysucks  U do remember where our secondary ranked... Right? Even before we cut Cro......

gusto
gusto

Imagine a (realistic) situation where we sign James Jones, Ed Dickson, and CJ2K after he gets cut. Do we still need offense, or can we go BPA?

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

Not when you have the 30th ranked pass offense 2 years in a row....

You draft best OFFENSIVE player available.....

Maybe you are cool with drafting defense every year and not scoring points......but I don't know why you would be.....

30th RANKED PASS OFFENSE IN 2012 AND 2013- NY JETS

levi
levi

@bradysucks  It is pretty rare to get the CB talent the way the Seahawks did I think. I wonder if its the coaching or the scouting who gets the credit for that.

tal8

@bradysucks  It's not insane - It's life. If you have only 1 starter at the position then...... Tough s***.

tal8

@gusto  U don't wann'a miss a once in I don't know how many years such a talented group of WRs. No way we do not draft one of them...

bradysucks
bradysucks

@tal8 @harold @bradysucks @Brendan @gusto

Picking a CB AGAIN in round 1 or 2 is INSANE!

We've chosen 2 1st round CB's since  2010!!!!!!! (Wilson & Millner).....Find a CB later in the draft which is where Seattle found Sherman, Browner, etc.....

NO MORE CB's early in the draft -  WE NEED OFFENSE

gusto
gusto

Right now, my ideal situation is to sign James Jones and Ed Dickson so we have pass catchers in place heading into the draft. I have no problem with Decker/Jones/Kerley/Hill as our top 4 receivers and it still gives Hill his last chance to be a starter in the NFL. After that, I'd go Dennard in the 1st and Attaochu in the 2nd. I'd take a guard in the 3rd and go BPA the rest of the draft.

tal8
tal8

@harold @tal8 @bradysucks @Brendan @gusto  All depends how we look like on draft day. If we go to the draft with only Dee as our starting caliber CB... They are picking a CB either on 1st or 2nd.

tal8
tal8

@bradysucks @tal8 @Brendan @gusto  Depends whether we go defense or offense on the 1st rd. If we r not filling our holes at OLB/CB/FS anything goes but not offense & offense 1&2. Cannot see that happening.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @gusto

Cooks is a monster......He is a take it to the house type WR....blazing speed.....great moves....hard to tackle....great yards after the catch

@gusto  I think Gilbert/Dennard and/or Lee/Beckham/Cooks are available at 18. Any of those is good with me.
