Six reactions from today’s Jets 2013 final press conference

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Today Rex Ryan and John Idzik addressed the media in an annual season wrap-up press conference. As expected, not much was determined or revealed, but here’s a few things we did take from the live feed on SNY.

No more information than when we started — Sorry, but there really wasn’t anything said about contracts or the status of coaches that moved the needle. Contracts are private matters and the coaching staff and players will be reviewed and dealt with in time. Idzik and Ryan held the line and we’ll have to assume more information on assistant coaches and/or coordinators will come out when it comes out.

idzik-rexLife is beautiful — A lot of praise was lavished from Rex onto to John, and vice versa. Some of it sounded genuine, but then other parts of it seemed rote to us. One thing did stand out: when Idzik and Ryan were asked to comment on what they’d learned about each other, John’s answer seemed methodical. When it was Rex’s turn he took the opportunity to make it into a joke as if  he’d learned nothing from Idzik this year. It’s a joke, but as mom always told you … “behind every joke there’s a little truth.”

No one’s getting ahead of themselves — There were no blanket declarations. No guarantee made. No starting roster spots were locked up. Geno Smith was not named the 2014 starter (nor should he be yet, the Jets would have gotten killed for it), but Idzik also acknowledged that the team will look to get better at each and every position on the team if possible. While Idzik likes their “nucleus” — including quarterback — they will do whatever they can to make the Jets a better team. It was a well-reasoned and longview approach … and frankly one that didn’t seem to go over with some (not all) in the audience. Brick & Nick were used as reasonable examples of players who should be starters in 2014, but then again, it’s a very long offseason and anything could foreseeably happen between now and September … Idzik was right to not overcommit.

Hope and change — Idzik did grant that the Jets will have “maneuverability” this year with a good amount of cap room and draft picks. He didn’t call out any specific positions or players that might be part of those plans either … but did you expect he would? So, as you can imagine, when the burning questions about Mark Sanchez long-term status were inevitably asked, it was tamped down with a “let’s get him healthy first” wet blanket.

John Idzik is not a good liar — Please understand, I mean that in the kindest way imaginable. When asked about whether the team made any inquiries into other coaching candidates he sidestepped the question and then wandered off into Jetsnostalgialand. It wasn’t a very convincing answer to a crucial question about how close Idzik was to attempting to pull the trigger on his head coach. Follow ups about Dennis Thurman’s status were also left for another day.

Some in the press’s expectations of the presser were not met and they seem perturbed by this — It’s hard to explain, but there’s a certain Quixotic vibe that comes along with being a member of the press. Maybe this one press conference is going to be the one. But alas, no one broke down and confessed on the stand. No one said anything that will prove worthy of a two second lead-in for SportsCenter. This was not one for the record books. And I was never surprised by that. What amuses me is watching some of Twitter feeds run from factual, to tinged with interpretation to frustrated editorializing. I’m sorry but … what hard answers did one think they were going to get from today’s media availability?

"And I was never surprised by that."

Rex is wearing off on you (use of the word 'never')

Nothing is going to be handed to us because we won the last two games of 2013, that being said I feel good about this organization moving forward and headed into next year. Lets see how the off season unfolds, we have a great opportunity to sure up some holes and come back stronger and wiser next year.

I hope the team holds onto that feeling of not making the playoffs and going home and use that as motivation for when you have those opportunities next year to close out games and come out strong.

The future is bright but nothing is going to be given to us!

Go Jets!!!

Some folks have already taken their shot at the jets off-season plan so I figured I'd throw in my 2 cents.

I would release the following players:

Santonio Holmes

Antonio Cromartie

Mark Sanchez

Konrad Reuland

I would target the following players in free Agency:

TJ Ward S

Sam Shields CB

Brandon LaFell WR

Willie Colon OL

Nick Folk PK

Ellis Lankster CB

Aaron Berry CB

Shaun Hill QB

Kellen Winslow TE

Austin Howard OT

Leger Douzable DT/DE

That would leave around $1o to $15 million in cap space.

I would draft 2 WR's in the first three rounds, an In-Line TE as well.

I would also draft an OLB, ILB, RB, QB and a FB/TE hybrid

I would also draft guys with an eye towards Special Teams play as we are very weak there.

Targets in the draft would be as follows:

WR's: Watkins, Lee, Benjamin, Beckham Jr.. Landry, Abbrederis

TE's: CJ Fiedorowicz, Marcel Jensen

OLB: Van Noy, Sam, Ottoachu

ILB: Mosley, Skov, Smallwood, Max Bullough

RB: Charles Sims, tre Mason

QB: David Fales, Zach Mettenberger

FB/TE Hybrid: Colt Lyerla

"Facts to interpretation to frustrated editorialization": That perfectly describes the Jets media.

No story here so lets talk about something else

Draftek has us taking the following in the first three rounds:

Round 1 Jace Amaro TE

Round 2 Kelvin Benjamin WR

Round 3 Odell Beckham, Jr. WR

Round 3 Michael Sam OLB

Interesting pattern emerging in the mock draft communtiy with regards to the Jets needs/selections!

Walter Football has updated their Mock Draft and have the Jets taking the following:

 Round 1 Jace Amaro TE

Round 2 Davante Adams WR

Round 3 Odell Beckham, Jr. WR

Round 3 Ty Zimmerman Safety

I would take the next player they had instead of Zimmerman....Charles Sims RB with he second 3rd round pick.

Brian, I heard what you heard from the live presser: nothing but coach-speak. I would've liked the media to ask Rex why he thinks it takes the team 3-4 weeks to get back in the flow after the Bye and what he will do to fix this going forward. With all the love and team spirit being tossed around this seems particularly relevant. It's also important if the team is really going to be on the upswing.

Off topic: The NFL has to rethink Strength of Schedule wrt the draft. It has too much impact when 5 teams have the same record (e.g., 8-8) and the perennially dominant clubs end of drafting before the less successful franchises.

In 2014, thanks to beating Miami in the season finale and getting to 8-8 vs 7-9, the Jets not only dropped 5 slots (from 13 to 18th) but also draft behind all other 8--8 teams except Miami. That means that dominant teams like the Steelers and Ravens both draft before us and they are traditionally much better at selecting talent. - I'm not looking forward to seeing who they select that could've gone to us.

Jets nation!!! this is only my wish that I would like to see happen and think that the new york jets... whould be the number 1 seed in 2014

We need a playmaker at Rb

We need a playmaker at wr

we need to add better dept in the secondary also get faster at the Mlb -Olb spots david harris is a lil bit to slow in the middle also calvin pace on the outside yes he did have 10 sacks for us but he to slow to cover the flats or dropping back in coverage we need an upgrade in these positions

we need to fix that LG postion maybe a good vet that can come groom winters and show him how to recognize stuns and understand how to play the position

If we can get these things fixed I think they win the division and the first round bye in 2014

here's is some players that can help in this free agent class

Brian orakpo - outside lineback

Sam shields - DB ( If cro walks)

Hakeem Nicks- WR

Darren McFadden- RB

And draft a TE WR MLB QB OLB S

I love these message boards, where I learn things like "Erick Decker would be a slight upgrade over Greg Salas". Happy New Year everyone

Brian / Bent -- Perhaps you could do an article about the revamped scouting staff.  Based on past Jet drafts...there is certainly room for improvement.  What do we know about the new team of scouts that Idzik brought in?  Thx!

So you wouldn't improve the O line which the bottom 5 of the league?

@frustjetfn

We actually dropped from 11 to 18 with the win (that is where we would have picked because of S.O.S).

The Strength of Schedule tiebreaker actually makes sense and is part of the NFL effort to create parity.

It is also a non-subjective way of setting the draft order.

At least you never sway from finding the negatives in every aspect of the jets.

Kudos?

Yeah and when someone points out something marshrandy doesn't agree with he just calls you a troll.

How much will Decker cost?  Catching passes from the greatest QB ins history is a far cry from Geno Smith who still hasn't fully shown the ability to pass before the receiver breaks. I like the idea of Decker, but not for a ransom

Happy New Year to You too!

I agree. I'd also like an article about who our scouts are & how the Jets break it all down.

@maynardfan All you have to know is that Bradway is still there :)

@johnnyl65@a57se

Yeah, I know about that...I wouldn't take him untill the 6th round at the earliest. He is an amazing talent with dung for brains.....so the interview would have to be good.

@BDarc23

Oops! I left him off my list of FA's to target!

Thanks!

frustjetfn

@a57seJust like anything else the NFL does, that rule can use improvement.

I have no problem w/SOS wrt playoff tie breakers, but am suggesting that for the draft SOF (strength of franchise) somehow be factored in. Ironically, I think this change would definitely be in the interest of PARITY. Then an historically bad team like the Browns who had a weak schedule and few lucky wins (good calls, etc.) couldn't find themselves drafting behind a perennial dynasty like the Pats if they had the same W-L record.

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@DrJonathanReeferYou mean I never sway from wanting the best for this franchise.

IMO there's a big difference between being a cheerleader and a fan and too many people confuse the two. All it takes to be a cheerleader is pom-poms, a leader and (usually) a paycheck. On the other hand, to be a hardcore fan you know the teams history, celebrate the good times and suffer through the bad time with them and like any good friend you can still see their faults. Yes, you see them, but still stay true. And BTW, that's a hellofa lot easier than waving pom-poms.

marshrandy
marshrandy

@a57se lol. I had to give slightly more context to your madness. Happy New years drive safe

maynardfan

@jaym @maynardfan Hey JayM…he wasn't a good GM and may not be a good scout…but its been documented that Bradway lobbied hard for the Jets to draft Russell Wilson.  If Tannenbaum had listened to him, he would have beat out Mark S. in 2012 (no buttfumble, etc.).

a57se
a57se

@BDarc23@a57se

I think LaFell is a very under rated WR who we could get for a good price and I think he would be a good addition to Nelson, Kerley and Hill + two rookies.

I do not do these free Agent signings without considering the Cap costs and with the guys I have us targeting, there might not be the money available to get a higher priced WR and with us also drafting two WR's in the first three rounds, I felt this was the best compromise.

BDarc23
BDarc23

@a57se @BDarc23

What are you thinking with the Brandon Lafell move? He seems pretty consistent at 600 yds per year so not much beeter than a David Nelson

a57se
a57se

@frustjetfn@a57se

Well if they went by the last five years records...the Dolphins would pick ahead of the Jets but the rest of the 8-8 teams would be behind us. We would be picking 15 instead of 18.......

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@a57se@frustjetfnI like it! There should be something factored into the Draft Rules in the interest of parity.

 Are you listening Roger Goodell? Then ask yourself: How many of the perennial also-rans and never-was teams have been in the playoffs at least once in the last 10 years? See, this is not just Jets-centric b/c at least we've been there, but some bottom feeders have not. Maybe you should think on it. As good as it is, something can be done to improve the NFL product.

a57se
a57se

@frustjetfn@a57se

i have an idea....how about the tiebreaker being the worst aggregate record over the past 5 seasons?

This way you aren't singling out any set of teams yet you are taking into account recent success as well.

If a tie exists after taking the aggregate then S.O.S. could be used......

a57se
a57se

@frustjetfn@a57se

It is an interesting idea......I don't think the league would ever adopt that but i see where you are coming from.

@frustjetfn @__fense @DrJonathanReefer

i'm frustrated too... Rex shouldve took the team to D&B every single day last week then the night before the game tell his team to throw the game after playing hard the other 16 so we can move a few picks up in the draft... but of course they have to make it look good so maybe everytime miami threw a pick we throw 2?

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@__fense@frustjetfn@DrJonathanReeferTo tell the truth, I don't give a dmn if Miami is in the playoffs; I only care if we make the playoffs. Then if Miami made them too, I'd want to kick their butts out so we could get to the SB.

If you recall, that's what happened when we met NE in the playoffs. ...And wasn't that one great experience?

To be Jets-centric is not to be blind!

djf1
djf1

@__fense@frustjetfn@DrJonathanReefer yeah, somehow I doubt they'd be celebrating moving up a few spots in the draft.

@frustjetfn @DrJonathanReefer Does anyone believe for a second that frustrated jets fan or I'm-old-and-therefore-am-smarter-than-everyone a57se would be talking about how great it is if the Jets lost and Miami was in the playoffs right now?

a57se

@marshrandy@a57se

You admitted you lied in your comment that responded to me saying you misquoted me and NOW you want me to explain how it is a lie?

marshrandy

@a57se @marshrandy  how is it a lie? This is a copy and paste of your comment

"I agree completely on Decker.....he is similar to Brian Hartline....nothing special but probably an upgrade over Salas and a slight upgrade over Nelson."

@bklyndude @maynardfan @jaym  BklynDude…it could be that Bradway was ignored because his miss ratio was too high.  We'll have to "wait for Tannenbaum's book"…lol.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@maynardfan @jaym There's probably a reason why they stopped listening to him.

Unless you know all of the players he recommended or didn't recommend,  it's hard to know how good his evaluations are in total.

The only thing we know for sure is the Jets have not drafted many great offensive skill players in the past ten years compared to most teams.

buddyryan

Bradway's issue from what some have written was he didn't properly use value when drafting...e.g. Taking a kicker in the second round

buddyryan

He also was a gig fan of Revis in the 2007 draft
