Draft-2014-e1389404247238

The Jets Blog 2014 draft primer

The Jets have remained tight-lipped about their plans for the upcoming 2014 NFL draft. When asked about picking a wide receiver in the first round just a few days ago, Jets GM John Idzik said, via Metro, “I wouldn’t say it is safe to say anything at this point. We’re going to take the draft one pick at a time and take the best player available.”

As of Tuesday, Ian Rapoport reported that the Jets were looking to trade up into the Top 10.

So, where could the Jets go when the draft begins on Thursday? First, check out how Monday’s rumors will impact the Jets. Then, listen in as Brian Bassett goes through his “100 percent Arbitrary Mock Draft” during the most recent TheJetsBlog Podcast.

For a more visual look, check out Bassett’s predictions for rounds 1 through 3 and rounds 4 through 7

What do the Jets need during the 2014 draft? Take a closer look at the team’s offensive line, wide receivers and cornerbacks to find out.

The Jets could also consider picking up a quarterback during the draft, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. Get Bassett’s take on the potential pick here

Now that you know what the team needs for the draft, find out who made Jake Steinberg’s list of defensive backs and defensive fronts that the Jets have shown interest in.

Lastly, take a look at the following profiles to get a better sense of the players you could see in New York or around the league during the 2014 season:

Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert said the Jets were "one of the few teams that told me if I was there when they picked, they were going to get me.''

This concerns me.

Jordan Matthews is a steal in the second round!!!!!!!! Thats who I'd like to see us draft anyway... we can go any other way in the first and if we get Matthews in the second we're set...

If I never read any draft twitter and only based my opinion on watching tons of sec football I would say williams is much better than beckham. Although both deser e to be top 15 pics.

0There will be an elite wr/te at 18. We will stay put. The only wild card would be if one of the quarterbacks falls and we have thdem significantly higher rated than we had geno last year. At this point we are over thinking.

I can't believe Idzik is making draft picks one at a time. Freakin amateur.

Tanny used to draft them two picks at a year.

According to ESPN's Ed Werder, "nobody in the NFL will be surprised" if Odell Beckham is drafted ahead of Mike Evans on Thursday.

NFL teams seem smitten with Beckham despite his limited size (5'11/198), as he's been linked to clubs drafting as early as Tampa at No. 7 overall, Buffalo at No. 9, Detroit at No. 10, and the Giants at No. 12. We consider 9-16 to be the "sweet spot" for Beckham's draft slot. Our main takeaway from this Werder report is that perhaps Evans will not be drafted as early as people expect.

Not a surprise to me.....

My final mock of this draft.   Special thanks to  tsjc68, whose board was used as a guideline and template for the picks wherever possible.   I'd be delighted if things turned out this way come Sunday.

OT...I live in Virginia, and all I hear is that the Skins screwed up trading up for RG3.  Just curious other thoughts.

IMO, the trade's still an unknown and RG3 was still recovering from knee surgery.  Everyone praised the trade his rookie year, but now soured on him.  I don't get it.  Am I missing something here?

@a57se  As tempting as it would be having Evans sit there at 18, I wouldn't do it, with decker we have a big bodied possesion receiver, we need someone who can spread a defense. If Evans was there, the Jets would have good offers to move into that spot, I would move back to between #20 through #22.  And hopefully still be able to draft Cooks. And maybe add a second round draft pick.

By 11pm we'll be a better team whoever we pick...except for JFBall.

Love Cooks btw. Just a super compliment to what we have already and the wco fit.

@Wilkershakes  Too soon to tell.

They gave up a crapload of value to get him, but if he's an All-Pro caliber QB (and he still could end up being one), there's pretty much no expense too large for one of those.

@Pablo Bruno even if Evans somehow falls out of the top 10, he's not making it to 18. But if he did, I'd take him in 1 second. There's plenty of speedsters we are looking at in this draft later or who will be cut.

@Pablo Bruno Take Evans and pray Hill plays well enough to keep safeties honest.

@SackDance99 @a57se

It would lend credence to other rumors that are floating around but nothing surprises me at this point....

Wwwwwwwwait a minute, since when do you like Beckham?....:)

@tsjc68 @Wilkershakes  It's definitely a lot, but you have to do that for a top QB.  He showed that he could do it, but still can't be judged completely on last year.  Gruden will have that offense humming.  He made Dalton look pretty good, and Dalton's Sancheztastic....

@Marcus Armstrong

Unless RG3 turns into the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady who also can run.....

SackDance99

@Wilkershakes @Brendan@tsjc68The Shanahans let RG III be RG III and by far the only mistake they made was letting him play in the playoffs.  RGIII caused a lot of his problems by taking too many unnecessary hits.  I thought the Shanahans were, if anything, innovative in they way they used the read option in the NFL and, it worked.  They led the NFL in rushing in 2012, while RG III was a legitimate passing threat.  The first rule of any athlete is to protect yourself and RG III just didn't do that.  I don't think that goes entirely on the Shanahans.

Welcome back dude...even if it's temporary. And thanks for that draft board, really good stuff!

Wilkershakes

@Brendan @tsjc68  They are going to be better with D-Jax and Jordan Reed more experienced.  As well as Jay Gruden taking over for the Shanahans (awful)...

57 I would agree a top tier QB on a rookie deal is worth it.

@a57se @tsjc68  My temporary insanity was a side effect of all those gays in Sweden.  I can't focus on anything anymore or maintain a good family life.  Their gayness is ruining my American life.

@a57se @tsjc68  False.  We gave up 6 things to get Sanchez and only got 2 things back. Hence, we gave up too much and got fleeced.

Sincerely,

@tsjc68 @a57se

Well compared to what Washington gave up, we got an absolute steal.....to bad Sanchez turned out to be a bum.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@a57se @tsjc68  Yup, which is why I agree that trading up for RG3 could end up being worth it or not.  All depends on how he turns out.

At least he was a better guy to gamble on in the top five than Sanchez was.  RG3 the collegiate prospect >>>>>>>> Sanchez the collegiate prospect.

If you miss it is always bad...

If you hit, the first three years will be rough but after that^^^^^^^^^^

@tsjc68 To be fair, the Skins have a pretty damn good offense, RGIII just got hurt.

tsjc68

@a57se @Marcus Armstrong  Spending too much to get one makes it harder to build a good team around him, though.

Taking Sanchez in the first was bad.  Trading up to get him made it exponentially worse.
