The Rundown: The Chris Johnson holding pattern

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

A week ago when Chris Johnson was cut by the Titans, PFT reported that Johnson would pick his new team by the middle of this week.  Well the middle of this week has come and gone and Johnson is still a free agent, looking for a new home.

Florio makes some suggestions as to why this might be.

… maybe the devaluation of the tailback position continues, with Johnson being the latest visit of the trend toward the passing game and away from workhorse running backs.

[...]

With the draft less than four weeks away, it possibly could stay that way until after teams with lingering needs at the position try to address those needs with incoming rookies.

Unless, of course, Johnson currently is negotiating with one or more teams who have insisted on secrecy…

From what we hear, the Jets have urged the folks they’ve negotiated with to keep quiet about the matters … could the Jets be one of the teams insisting in secrecy that Florio hints at?

Since the beginning, there’s been an “under the radar” team.  NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Jets were the team that “came closest” to trading for Johnson.

The Jets are more than likely going to add some running backs through the NFL draft, so if the Jets and Johnson are interested in coming to terms there might be some concern about just what sort of running back (or two) the Jets can find in the draft … more than likely they would draft someone who would be in competition for Bilal Powell’s job and not so much Johnson’s … assuming he even went to New York.

Regardless, Adam Schein shares his thoughts on NFL.com why Johnson could still be an effective part of an NFL team and why he thinks the Jets are the best match for the former Titan, double secret negotiations or not.

Johnson is most certainly not an upper-echelon back these days, but he can give you 15 carries and catch the ball out of the backfield. He can help teams — IF he is willing to check his ego at the door.

[...]

Personally, I think the best fit is with the New York Jets. Chris Ivory currently tops the depth chart at running back for Gang Green. I like Ivory. He has some sizzle. But he can’t stay healthy for an entire campaign. A Johnson-Ivory tandem would be solid, and an upgrade for New York. It’s logical.

In addition to Schein, ESPN’s Jon Clayton thinks New York will be Johnson’s next home, as does CBS Sports Jason LaCanfora.

In the end, given his lack of productivity lately, I still don’t expect Johnson to sign a lucrative deal. If he can get $2 million guaranteed with the chance to earn more in incentives, that might be as good as it gets. And I’ve been saying for weeks I expect the Jets to be a likely landing spot for him and I’ve heard nothing to change my thinking lately. So I’ve still got him penciled in to a team so lacking in explosion on offense.

Simply adding Chris Johnson won’t make the Jets an explosive offense, but adding Johnson along with their signing of Eric Decker, Mike Vick and whomever they come up with in the draft at receiver, tight end and/or running back could be enough to effect some change on this group.

But for now, we’ll just have to wait, just like Chris Johnson and the Jets seem to be.

Chris Johnson would create defensive nightmares because they have to put another man in the box. That's going to help the passing game and open up check down's to CJ2K. They should get sign him already and draft WRs, DBs, Pass Rushers and maybe one RB just to be safe with the 12 picks. If we can trade picks for a need position established player then why not.

Why the lack of any mention -- and respect, for that matter -- of Bilal Powell? He's been a fine back with the Jets the last couple of years. He and Ivory were certainly adequate last year in tandem. Signing running backs on the back end of their careers is always a risky proposition -- just look at Ladamian Tomlinson: he was OK, but not excellent by any means, in his first year, and was a disaster the second [I think he led the league in negative-yardage carries] and got hurt, too. Chris Johnson getting hurt is probably more likely to happen than not, and I just don't think it's worth the risk -- and the money -- to sign him.

Stick with Ivory-Powell, and draft another running back next month. There are certainly going to be many available in the third-fourth-fifth rounds. That's the way I'd go.

Idzik ought to give Mike shanahan a call and ask him who is gonna be a stud running back in the draft. That guy has always had good RBs and he finds them late too. Terrel Davis and Alfred Morris both picked in the 6th round.

Looking at it from CJ's point of view; one day I'm getting paid $8 million bucks...and then the next day teams are offering me about $3 million. That is a tough pill to swallow. I think CJ figures what is the rush. It's also possible he might wait till after the draft when teams who thought they might get a RB but missed, might be more amenable to paying more.

CJ needs to be a Jet... period

CJ +DAT +ODBjr /Cooks...etc

my plan is clear. Weapons

So lets see,we let Greene go to the Titans where they keep him and let Johnson go and Jet fans think signing Johnson is the answer when his stats and the Titans say he's no better than Greene. Got it,Brilliant...

Signing  Chris Johnson and drafting  a back would be counter productive,either or not both.

CLOSE SOURCE- ITs a great possiblity we may get him if no one exceeds JETS offer. I'm trying to get him to go to New York. We live in the same city and I'm negotiating with him through his fam... A couple of more teams do want him though.

I don't know how valid it may be, but the twitter feed from TruJetsFans tweeted that there is a verbal agreement between the jets and Chris Johnson already in place. They claim it's from "a VERY reliable source." Just FYI.

@levi  I will say this about Pittsburgh, green bay, new england, the giants and baltimore. They seemingly have done it the way Idzik is trying to do it and they have been the most successful franchises over the past 15 years. They still struck in free agency when an obvious upgrade was out there..(Boldin got the ravens thier superbowll.. and he was old as dirt :) . If he can draft as well as Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Green bay..then well have something.

@Marvel  signing CJ would be wasted money. We are in a rebuild, we dont need a 29 year old back on the decline, averaging Greene type numbers. No thank you

@johnnyl65  Im sure cjs 8 mil had something to do with why he was cut.. but thats just my opinion

Chris is a better back than Greene on his WORST day!!! That happens sometimes in the league, sometimes players just need a change of scenery too!

StealthJET

Very true. That would be dumb I think, a waisted pick... I don't know you all feel about Powell but I like him as being apart of the 3 headed monster in the backfield. Powell's got heart.

 Other teams are still in the hunt though. Its all about if the price is right pretty much. Its hard to get paid out here as a RB now a days. But just like anyone else. These guys want to get paid.

@Monty  As successful as the Patriots have been over the years, it's been the BB-Brady combo as far as offense goes in the passing game.  I don't think a RB on the Patriots has lasted more than two seasons.  Fickle? Cap issues, or just short tenure there?   BenJarvis blah blah  blah I thought was the answer for them. Nope.  As many others ,he had  a short tenure there.

levi
levi

@Monty  we wont know if Idzik is a good GM or not for a couple years but I like the idea of building a lasting team instead of always going for the big splash. Take a look at Washington, they always make the big FA moves and the still are bad. I think they are on their eighth Head coach since 1999 too. You need stability and young players to keep contending year after year. Washington reeks of desperation.

@eurojet

 The NFL will always be a "win now" league, regardless of if we are rebuilding, we are still actually trying to win.

Telling me what CJ averaged per carry without charting blocking schemes, opposing defensive fronts, missed blocks by titan lineman etc really means nothing.

signing CJ can only be viewed as a solid move IMO.

@StealthJET

I'd sign CJ and still draft either Archer or DeAnthony Thomas.

Give them PR and KR duties, spot plays while they bulk up and give them a heavier load the following season.

@levi @Monty  Yes, yes, & yes..... aren't you tired and disgusted of trying to make the playoffs if team A loses to team B...and then we might back into the playoffs.

Idzik wants sustainable success so that every year we have a good shot at making the playoffs or winning the division. Not hoping & praying that some other team has to lose first. Levi, your Redskin example is spot on.

Monty

@levi @Monty  yeah... Ive seen a lot of people booing at 0-0 in the first qtr...and they're the same people who wont make noise on third down..forget first and second :)

levi

@Monty  haha If you ever check out the game threads while the game is on you will see a lot of that type of stuff. Some people go crazy 3 minutes into the game and theyre saying "this games over."

Im not going to freak out but not getting him would be another blatent idzik failure hahaha

Monty
Monty

@levi @Monty  i get what youre saying ..but we cant rely on the draft to upgrade everything.. We need another RB. he still ran for 1000 yards.. Im not going to freak out but we need to find some talent upgrades and he would be a clear on over goodsen. He would make the team better.. we need some of that ..

but if we dont get him Im not going to do this... I was far more upset that we let every good corner go.

for your pleasure :)

@Monty  I wont be upset either way. A couple years ago I would have been drooling at the thought of getting CJ but I just dont know what he has left now.

@levi @Marvel@eurojet haha "monty" is that word that means caring about this season.. because if it is I hope he does,,iTs an obvious upgrade :)  We value the run more than any team in the league.. he should be with us.. this is a big test

@eurojet  He won't be getting 5 mil I don't think but the only one of those backs I'd take him over him would be Tre Mason IMO though.

@a57se

Your vision is pretty bad.

Here is the comment

"I want us to draft a future pro bowler like Tre Mason, or Seastrunk. Dudes that are able to break tackles and catch the ball out of the backfield."

Please 57 cut it out.

a57se

@harold

Hmmmm, I just read all the posts in this thread real carefully and  NO ONE said anything about Seastrunk catching the ball......

harold
harold

@eurojet

What is this talk about Seastrunk catching the ball he has 9 career receptions.  Zero last year.

Tre Mason has 19 career receptions and 12 last year.  These are not surefire fits for the WC offense.  Not saying they can't develop but they have very limited exp in these roles.

StealthJET
StealthJET

That's why he'll have a supporting cast though. He doesn't have to do it by himself anymore! Plus he'll be with a new team, Better defense, better line and hopefully better QB play this year. That revamps players! He was never thinking he was going to go to the SB over there!!! NO chance! With the squad we are putting together we can make a good run towards the playoffs. That makes players want to play harder!!!

eurojet
eurojet

@1969JAN12th true, but this draft is loaded and I take Mason, Hill, Sims, Seastrunk, Hyde, Sankey, Carey, Thomas, Freeman all over CJ on a 5+ Mill $ a year contract. None of them are better than CJ now, but long term the better choices.

1969JAN12th
1969JAN12th

@eurojet @Marvel  You do realize that the draft is a crapshoot....even assuming the players you think we should take instead of CJ are better;

their are 31 other teams that might take them instead of us.

eurojet
eurojet

@Marvel @eurojet  I respect your opinion, but I really dont like him. He gets stuffed all the time and he isnt a physical runner anymore. I want us to draft a future pro bowler like Tre Mason, or Seastrunk. Dudes that are able to break tackles and catch the ball out of the backfield.

Draft Seastrunk in the fourth and Dri Archer in 5th, or maybe 6th, cut Goodson and go with a RB depth chart of Ivory, Powell, Seastrunk and Archer into camp.

Marvel
Marvel

@levi

 Depends....

 We needs at least 3 more weapons, I'd rather pencil in CJ and put less pressure on the draft.

levi
levi

@Marvel @eurojet  Your not gonna go all "Monty" on us if we dont sign CJ are you?

StealthJET
StealthJET

12 picks is pretty exciting I must admit!!! With the addition of CJ and 12 RIGHT picks we could be in a MUCH better position than last year. Having Idzik as a GM DEFINATELY requires patience! lol It may be well worth it after draft's complete! I HOPE

Marvel
Marvel

@StealthJET

12 picks baby, we can take a chance on RBs WRs Punters, everyone lol.

But I dont trust Ford, I'd like a  backup plan.

StealthJET
StealthJET

Yeah, if they could hold up at returning well. But we have Jacoby Ford too. Hopefully he'll be a standout for us. With Chris I think we'll be nice at that spot. Our BIGGEST area of concern would be the WR position (to me)... I would rather tack a chance on a couple of those guys...
