Three matchups to watch today: Raiders at Jets

NFL: New Orleans Saints at New York Jets

Some matchups to look for today in the Jets – Raiders tilt.

Stefen Wisniewski Versus Damon Harrison

Running back has been an issue for the Raiders this season between the injuries to their best man Rashad Jennings and Darren McFadden.  This means that Jeremy Stewart will be the next man up for the Raiders and they will have to stick to what works when running the ball.  So far this season, Oakland likes to run the majority of their ground attack right up the middle.  Of course this is where the Jets are at their best with Muhammad Wilkerson and David Harris.  We don’t expect that the Raiders will try to get their  backs around the edge so when they run, look to see how Wisniewski matches up against Harrison it could be a key element in whether the Jets can shut down Oakland’s running game.

Rod Streater Versus Antonio Cromartie

Antonio Cromartie’s health has been an issue this season and teams have taken advantage of it and since getting signed, Ed Reed is providing little help over the top.  The Raiders will be without Denarius Moore come Sunday which means that the passing offense will focus around Rod Streater.  Streater only has two scores on the season but leads the team in yards and catches (43 for 657).  Streater is averaging 15.4 yards per catch so look out for the Raiders trying to beat the Jets over the top.  Remember that it was this same NFL crew of Gene Steratore’s that threw four questionable flags on Cromartie in the teams’ 2011 loss to the Raiders …

Muhammad Wilkerson versus Jared Velhdeer

Just like the Jets, the Raiders have been working all season with inexperienced quarterbacks.  So as tends to happen, the Raiders have been just as bad at the Jets at allowing sacks, tallying 38 on the season.  Today should prove to be a good opportunity to continue his prelude to a Pro Bowl by racking up another sack or two.

I agree with McGeorge........we need mildly competent QB play from Geno.

Brain,

The only match up that counts is Geno against the Raiders.  If he performs OK, not great, but OK, the Jets can wine.  If he is horrible, its a loss.

Darn. meant win not wine.  They can drink wine in celebration if they win, and can whine if they lose.  Which is what the NY sports writers will do.
