TJB Year in Review: August 2013

Mark Sanchez

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

With New Year’s and all the interest around any pending decisions, we took a few days off from the Year in Review posts … we’ll finish them up quickly over the next few days.  Here’s a quick look at all the happenings from the Jets of the last year, month by month.  Next up, August 2013 …

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Jets chant was reborn!! Well .. kind of.

Mark Sanchez got a start, everyone had a hot take.  David Aitken’s post went viral.

Geno defended his conditioning, Chris Ivory needed more of it. Kellen Winslow was monitored closely to keep him healthy.  Dee Milliner’s started to get dinged up too.  Coples was having a good camp.  Corey got to interview his surnamesake.  We also spoke with Mr. Kerley.  Check out the D-Line at work.

Geno Smith’s camp injury became a problem, impeding his chances to play in the preseason.  Rex called a practice of Smith while he was fighting off injury “brutal.”  Sanchez then got the second straight start.  The odd re-insertion of Sanchez caused him injure his shoulder joint due to an unfortunate injury.  Please stop talking about JaMarcus Russell!!!!  The Jets started to get ahead of the Sanchez injury story.

The Jets PR staff handed out their now-famous crib sheets for players.  Goodson returned to the team and was prepared to serve a four game suspension.  Matt Simms took advantage of an opportunity.  Dan Carpenter got a cup off coffee with the Jets.  The Jets submitted their 53 man roster.

We got a little preachy what with all the media on media violence.

Random stuff? The Jets moved on from Jordan White.  Joe McKnight continued his downward trend. Jeane had a Q&A with Damon Harrison.  Braylon impressed, but not enough for John Idzik.  CAN’T WAIT™ joined CBS Sports. We were unimpressed with whatever value Santonio could offer if and whenever he returned to the field.  Former Jet Dustin Keller had his first season with the Dolphins end way too early due to a low hit.

The Jets crowned their King Ugly, who was later deposed.

Kiper Jr.: Jet not top defensive rookie

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. posted his NFL all-rookie team , along with his picks for offensive and defensive rookies of the year. Most notably, he selected Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso over New York Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson as the top rookie on defense.

Alonso and Richardson are thought to be the top candidates for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, presented by the Associated Press.

Kiper's take: "If this were purely on per-play impact, I think Sheldon Richardson could back up his case as the best rookie overall, but I give Alonso a slight edge here based on his total impact. Alonso was third in the NFL in tackles and, perhaps just as impressive, was one of the best coverage linebackers in the NFL, a significant bonus. Because of his ability to cover, Alonso never came off the field; he played nearly 1,200 snaps. Richardson might be a better player, but I give the season edge to Alonso."

Just read that Met Life suites start at only 400 grand for this year's SB. That is a bargain as warmth equates to luxury they say. I am looking into a suite, lol

Oh my gerd, now the Geno nonsense is starting to show up around the web; what took them so long? Oy Vey!

I would have to say 2013 was a success, but now it's time to get to the next level. In a season when we were expected to win only 4/5 games, finishing .500 with a rookie QB, many new starters, new coaches and a new offensive system to boot, what more realistically can we Jet fans have asked for?  We were still fighting for a WC at the end of November.

Now with the rebuild over, Geno not a rookie and showing major improvement as well as Winters and Milliner, we can jump into the second phase. The Jets have mucho $ and draft picks to accomplish the above. It is all on team Idzik to make the most of those resources. While I am not in favor of celebrating 8-8 and no playoffs like we just won the SB, it still has to be noted how much this team accomplished when all the analysts had us close to dead last. We even finished close to mid pack by some in the power rankings.

Next season the fans will not accept a 4th season in a row of no playoffs and mediocrity. We have a tough schedule, but I am very optimistic moving forward and feel we are up to the task. This is a great time to be a Jets fan! I can't wait for the offseason moves to start. Go Jets!

@DrJonathanReefer imagine how pissed Boss would be if he didn't even get nominated? Between that and Wilk getting 2nd team all-pro and snubbed for the pro-bowl, there'd be a lot of offensive corpses littering many fields next year.

@DrJonathanReefer I don't think this is the legit ROY awards. The real awards are separated by offense/defense. I think this is just some fan thing.

@DrJonathanReefer PFF grades for the nominees through week 16 (don't have 17 up yet):

Allen: +16.2

Lacy + 16.9

Bernard: +16.4

Alonso: +8

Patterson: +6.8

Meanwhile - Sheldon: +29

@jaym Translation: I didn't bother watching any Bills/Jets games this year, so I'm just going to go with total tackles and call it a day.

@jake100 I might know a guy selling seats in his suite for 25k a pop ... now THAT'S a bargain!!

@jake100 "Now with the rebuild over."

Yeah, that's not accurate at all.

@rstysanchz

Yes it is and Sheldon Richardson said he switched to Coca Cola after hearing the results!

All good Jets fans should do the same! Boycott PEPSI!!!

@Brendan@jaym

Kiper is an idiot as well. ESPN is the spawning ground for idiots apparently.

@Brendan @jake100

True, phase 2 is more accurate. But the toughest part is out of the way. Now we are in much better shape, cap wise and with many draft picks and hopefully a more gelled team as opposed to 2013 with many new starters and hopefully there wont be too many major coaching changes. The arrow is definitely pointing up..

i have to admit i didnt know much about sheldon coming out of college so when we drafted him i was puzzled...but after his first interview i knew he was gonna be good...noone with that much confidence turns out to be a dud...we talkin the same pepsi who did the awful sanchez commercial that was played nonstop on gamedays like 2 or 3 years ago

@jake100 It's always tougher for at team to meet expectations when you're supposed to be something as opposed to over achieving when the pressures off and nobody expects it.

So I don't agree this year the tough part starts.
