TJB Year in Review: January 2013

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Here’s a quick look at all the happenings from the Jets of the last year, month by month.  First up, January 2013 …

For a month with no games, it sure was a busy one! Mike Tannenbaum was fired and while the body was still warm, Darrelle Revis started off the year with a bang by stating publicly that the team needed more playmakers — he wasn’t wrong. The good news was that Quinton Coples made Kiper’s rookie team.

Between nod-offs, Mike Francessa used his more elegant prose to called the Jets a “sewer” while Ryan ducked out on a post-season press conference he was obligated to do while the owner allowed cooler heads to prevail after the Tannenbaum firing. The PFWA was satisfied with an arrangement to speak with Ryan and Woody a week later, but Ryan was of course on vacation. It became a huge problem when he was spotted in the Bahamas sporting a rather telling tattoo.

On the down side, we predicted the wrong guy as the team’s next GM. What we later learned was the deal fell apart over hiring/firing of a coach. The Jets started unloading a host of their coaches. QB coach Matt Cavanaugh wasn’t retained, Pettine left for Buffalo, and Tony Sparano was finally fired.

It was made clear that Ryan wanted an offensive version of himself and a new defensive coordinator whom he would run the defense for … it for certain wouldn’t be his twin. Trouble brewed for the team’s top quarterback, despite a large salary and former STC Mike Westhoff declared the QB situation a “mess.”

Not to toot our own horn, but after after falling down on the job, but we did get it right first even ahead of guys like Schefter on who the new boss would be. Agent Greg Linton called Idzik a “great hire” by the Jets and Marty was then soon named the OC. The day Idzik was announced, he dropped a bomb on the media and it before the press conference even started that the Revis stuff picked up while Cromartie and LaRon went to the Pro Bowl.

Random stuff? PSLs were demonstrably proven to be a scam, Tim Tebow sat forlornly on the bench even in a mannequin display while his mythology was shattered and Tanny took the blame. I fell in love with future Seahawks TE Luke Willson and former Jet Bryan Thomas started down a slippery slope. Oh and we still weren’t going to talk about JaMarcus Russell.

Im curious what our TJB staff thinks about the fire/extend Rex situation. I believe Bassett said he would like Rex back but I havent heard what Weeks, Cory, steiny, Bent and others think.

I know Bent probably wont come out and say definitively one way or the other but it would be nice as you guys know inside stuff that we never hear about Im sure. Just a thought to see where you guys stand...

Rex is the first HC ever who's sole responsibility is defense. Around here he gets a pass for everything.

Funny how in all the Rex debates the penalty angle is never used. Not only is he a DC playing head coach but the "people's coach " can't even get his guys to play disciplined football.

Bottom line he's a poor HC, and a great /sometimes crafty /sometimes too crafty DC..

Am I the only one who feels Rex is getting canned come Sunday night?

And to think, 90% of this stuff was either greatly exaggerated by the media, or downright fabricated.

Brian, Bent --

You're don't have to apologize for 'falling down on the job''. I was in the newspaper business -- advertising end, but I knew some big-time reporters quite well -- and they ALL miss from time to time. It's a very difficult, delicate task to 'break' news stories: as you know, you should have two, three confirming sources before you go with a 'scoop', and sometimes you don't get it just right. I'll assume you went through all the proper protocol before going ahead with the story. It didn't work out. As I said, it happens to all reporters.

@a57se that would be like trading for Braylon again and giving up young players that we need to groom to have for 7 goods years, Fitz is great but getting long in the tooth, if he was the missing piece to a SB it would be ok.

bob

@a57se

That's a hard question wow I would really have to give that one some thought.

@a57se

The Rams 2 first round pics and the Lion 1st round pic. Ya dats a good idea.

@a57se Too crazy to even consider hypothetical.  But fantastically speaking, I wouldn't offer them anything.  I don't want to try to make something out of Eli's leftovers.

@a57se Cutler, but mainly because I despise Ben.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se OMG YES. *breaks phone keypad trying to dial*

Bent

@levi Steiny has been trying to get #KeepRex trending for the last week or so.

I'm an emotional beast, I always want guys to return - and they hardly ever do, and it usually works out okay.  Plus, when they do return, it often doesn't work out.

@a57se

I would really like to get Sammy Watkins . He looks like a really awesome receiver. Buffalo could also take a TE.

levi

@a57se No, we have to many draft picks to even keep on the roster but I would only trade up for a QB (in the 1st) at this time. Drafting a WR high scares me.

EDIT: Drafting a QB high oviously scares me too after Sanchez but Im willing to try again depending whos there.

marcus81
marcus81

@a57se Tanny is gone and Izzy doesn't seem like the type to trade away picks to move up

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I'm guessing this is based on the current draft order? Possibly.

But if the Jets win and the Billdos lose, that gap between the teams widens and I don't think that compensation would work.

@Marvel Jets have gone to bed with Rex, they either sink or swim with him or start over at worse, we know his strengths and weaknesses very good defensive mind, clueless about the offense, poor clock management, and too loyal to players, but somehow he could succeed with a really good OC that MM is and offense if Izzy gets him the players on offense to make it happen. I doubt any successful high profile coach want to come to NY. Parcells was the exception.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marvel What does Marvin Lewis or Mike Tomlin do different in regards to offense?

Until anyone gives a legitimate answer to the above, the whole "Rex isn't a complete HC" talking point is worthless.

@Seth PlautBy George I think you've got it! Don't know if the news will break Sunday night, but I do believe it's a done deal.

My guess is the same as yours. Rex will tell the team after the game and the shlt will hit the fan.

@jake100If the Phins D doesn't cover the middle of the field, that would greatly improve our chance of success. Let's hope the Miami DC is a moron like the Brown's DC, so we can embarrass them like they embarrassed us. Payback's a blitch.

Bent
Bent

@Jim Israel Yeah, the information Bassett got was accurate, he just jumped the gun because it wasn't a done deal yet.

Brendan
Brendan

@Johnsbodybyvi Ledo Wait, you don't want to bring in Tony Romo because he's "mistake prone," but you want Hay Cutler?

Johnny boy, that's just silly. Cutler is way more mistake-prone than Romo.

djf1
djf1

@Brendan @a57se I'd want some reassurance he can be fully healthy first though.

marcus81
marcus81

@bob@a57se Buffalo could become a force with another no.1 receiver opposite Johnson

Brendan
Brendan

@marcus81 All 57 did was ask if you, marcus81, would do it. Whether Idzik, or Random Team X would do it is a different matter entirely.

Marvel
Marvel

@Brendan

 look at your defense.."oh well Tomlin & Lewis do it too"

This is our second time doing this and you STILL cant tell me what makes rex a good HC..

 but i get your angle, it's cool.

Bent
Bent

@a57se @bob Beat writer of the year and GM of the day?  Maybe we should just give bob the head coach job while we're at it.

Can you fill in at left guard too, bob?

bob
bob

@a57se@bob

lol ..thank you thank you thank  you very much.

@Brendan@marcus81

That to if a good QB comes when Buffalo picks that would be hard one to pass up.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se So do the Jets. I don't see Marcus writing swan songs about this team, though.

Brendan
Brendan

@marcus81 They lost by 13 to the Browns (who the Jets just beat). They lost by 18 to the Saints (who the Jets beat). They lost by 21 to Tampa (who the Jets beat).

They're a bad offensive team.

marcus81
marcus81

@Brendan@marcus81 Bills have played the top teams tight and barely lost, with another top receiver they can pull out those close games. Manuel has played well enough for a rookie.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I didn't realize that none of them had. They've got like 3 weeks to declare, right?

Brendan
Brendan

@marcus81 Okay, so you wouldn't do it. That's fine, I was just clarifying 57's question because your firs tanswer made me think you didn't read it right the first time.

marcus81
marcus81

@Brendan@marcus81we need to draft as may players as we can and sort out who can help out the team, with the spot we have we should be able to get what we need, I still say Izzy doesn't trade up.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marvel I don't get how this is a response to my question, though.

I can continue giving examples. Mike McCarthy and his defense? Sean Payton and his defense? Norv Turner and his defense (when he ran a team)?

Guys have specialties, and then there's entire phases of the game they aren't experts on. Rex is no different than the majority of coaches in this regard.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I didn't say you can't speculate, but that's a bit much.

In other words, on a scale of 1-to-Hank, that's a solid 8.

Edit: adding a smiley face so you don't think I'm being serious... :)

levi
levi

@a57se So Rex was out coached again, that should have been our loss!!

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Oh, settle down with those conspiracy theories. The scheme they run is, relative to Rex's, pretty vanilla.

Bent
Bent

@a57se @Bent Sure, it's about perception.  But I know the source of the information and what that information was, so I stand by my comments.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se So if it said "set to offer a contract to..." you would have no issue?

That's a legitimate question, not me poking fun or anything along those lines.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bent Wasn't it his complete lack of knowledge regarding contracts & salary cap that scared teams away?

Bent
Bent

@a57se @Bent What would have been misleading about it?  At the time, they did look set to hire him.

Bent
Bent

@a57se @Bent Yes, although I think that would have been the case if the headline was "Buzz: Jets look set to hire Gamble" in which case nobody could say anything.

We live and learn.

Bent
Bent

@a57se @Bent @Jim Israel

He's acknowledged that and will learn from it, but really the article contents were 100% accurate, just the headline was over-sensationalized.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Well, they were drawing up paperwork and all Gamble had to do was impress in his interview, right? I thought that's how it was explained to us.
