TJB Year in Review: January 2013

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Here’s a quick look at all the happenings from the Jets of the last year, month by month.  First up, January 2013 …

For a month with no games, it sure was a busy one! Mike Tannenbaum was fired and while the body was still warm, Darrelle Revis started off the year with a bang by stating publicly that the team needed more playmakers – he wasn’t wrong. The good news was that Quinton Coples made Kiper’s rookie team.

rex-ryan-jets-tattoo-beach

Between nod-offs, Mike Francessa used his more elegant prose to called the Jets a “sewer” while Ryan ducked out on a post-season press conference he was obligated to do while the owner allowed cooler heads to prevail after the Tannenbaum firing. The PFWA was satisfied with an arrangement to speak with Ryan and Woody a week later, but Ryan was of course on vacation. It became a huge problem when he was spotted in the Bahamas sporting a rather telling tattoo.

On the down side, we predicted the wrong guy as the team’s next GM. What we later learned was the deal fell apart over hiring/firing of a coach. The Jets started unloading a host of their coaches. QB coach Matt Cavanaugh wasn’t retained, Pettine left for Buffalo, and Tony Sparano was finally fired.

It was made clear that Ryan wanted an offensive version of himself and a new defensive coordinator whom he would run the defense for … it for certain wouldn’t be his twin. Trouble brewed for the team’s top quarterback, despite a large salary and former STC Mike Westhoff declared the QB situation a “mess.”

Not to toot our own horn, but after after falling down on the job, but we did get it right first even ahead of guys like Schefter on who the new boss would be. Agent Greg Linton called Idzik a “great hire” by the Jets and Marty was then soon named the OC. The day Idzik was announced, he dropped a bomb on the media and it before the press conference even started that the Revis stuff picked up while Cromartie and LaRon went to the Pro Bowl.

Random stuff? PSLs were demonstrably proven to be a scam, Tim Tebow sat forlornly on the bench even in a mannequin display while his mythology was shattered and Tanny took the blame. I fell in love with future Seahawks TE Luke Willson and former Jet Bryan Thomas started down a slippery slope. Oh and we still weren’t going to talk about JaMarcus Russell.

Hypothetical F

Jon Gruden lets Woody know that he would be interested in Coaching the Jets IF he could bring in his own people (GM, Coaches, etc.) to run the day to day football stuff. Woody is baffled by the situation and comes to you for advice. What do you tell him?

Hypothetical E

Arizona lets it be known they are taking offers for Larry Fitzgerald.

What would YOU be willing to trade (DRAFT PICKS PLEASE!) for his services?

Hypothetical D

Jerry Reece and Tom Coughlin are fired on Black Monday. The Giants spend a week and a half to find their next GM and HC and once in place, they decide that Eli is not the answer going forward for them. They are going to rebuild the NY Giants in their own image and the Mara's decide to back Bill Cowher and crew.

YOU are the GM of the Jets, do you call the Giants about Eli? What would you offer them?

Hypothetical C

Ben Rothlisberger and Pittsburgh can NOT come together on a deal and Pittsburgh decides NOT to franchise him as the main sticking point is the O'coordinator and Tomlin will NOT have players dictating who the coaches are.

Jay Cutler is also allowed to walk in Chicago because Phil Emery has out all the data into his super secret, super computer and the answer came out McCown and a rookie!.

You can ONLY pursue one of these guys as both want to be the only glitter in your eye and neither is guaranteed to come to the Jets as there will be other suitors.

Who do you pursue??? (Yes, neither is an option!)

Hypothetical B

Jerry Jones has decided that Tony Romo is the problem in Dallas and has also decided he really likes Geno Smith.

He offers the Jets Romo for our 1st round pick, our Third round pick and Geno Smith.

Would YOU pull the trigger? Would Idzik?

OK, so I am a little ahead of things and starting on off-season issues already but it is kind of slow today!

Hypothetical A

Jay Cutler will come to the Jets for $12 million per year with incentives that could push the contract much higher with playoffs, playoff wins and SB's.

Do YOU sign him? Would Idzik sign him?

Im curious what our TJB staff thinks about the fire/extend Rex situation. I believe Bassett said he would like Rex back but I havent heard what Weeks, Cory, steiny, Bent and others think.

I know Bent probably wont come out and say definitively one way or the other but it would be nice as you guys know inside stuff that we never hear about Im sure. Just a thought to see where you guys stand...

If the Jets could trade their 1st, 3rd and 6th to jump ahead of Buffalo to get Sammy Watkins, would you do it?

(I am assuming we get the 14th pick and this trade would get us to 8 with Buffalo picking 9th. We would trade TB's 3rd round pick plus our 1st and 6th. trade value is approximately 94% which is better then most of the trades last draft for whomever we are trading with.)

I would because I think Sammy Watkins is the ideal WR for MM's offense. He is much quicker then Evans (better then Lee as well) which is a plus for a young QB because he can get open very quickly. He runs very good routes and can catch anything. He is also a threat to go deep.

@a57se that would be like trading for Braylon again and giving up young players that we need to groom to have for 7 goods years, Fitz is great but getting long in the tooth, if he was the missing piece to a SB it would be ok.

@a57se

That's a hard question wow I would really have to give that one some thought.

The Rams 2 first round pics and the Lion 1st round pic. Ya dats a good idea.

@a57se Too crazy to even consider hypothetical.  But fantastically speaking, I wouldn't offer them anything.  I don't want to try to make something out of Eli's leftovers.

@a57se Cutler, but mainly because I despise Ben.

Johnsbodybyvi Ledo

No..no way would I give up a first for a 33 year old mistake prone qb. 3rd round and Geno yes all day.

@a57se OMG YES. *breaks phone keypad trying to dial*

@levi Steiny has been trying to get #KeepRex trending for the last week or so.

I'm an emotional beast, I always want guys to return - and they hardly ever do, and it usually works out okay.  Plus, when they do return, it often doesn't work out.

bob
bob

@a57se

I would really like to get Sammy Watkins . He looks like a really awesome receiver. Buffalo could also take a TE.

levi
levi

@a57se No, we have to many draft picks to even keep on the roster but I would only trade up for a QB (in the 1st) at this time. Drafting a WR high scares me.

EDIT: Drafting a QB high oviously scares me too after Sanchez but Im willing to try again depending whos there.

marcus81
marcus81

@a57se Tanny is gone and Izzy doesn't seem like the type to trade away picks to move up

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I'm guessing this is based on the current draft order? Possibly.

But if the Jets win and the Billdos lose, that gap between the teams widens and I don't think that compensation would work.

a57se
a57se

@bob

Bob, you get the GM of the DAY Award!

Brendan
Brendan

@Johnsbodybyvi Ledo Wait, you don't want to bring in Tony Romo because he's "mistake prone," but you want Hay Cutler?

Johnny boy, that's just silly. Cutler is way more mistake-prone than Romo.

djf1
djf1

@Brendan @a57se I'd want some reassurance he can be fully healthy first though.

a57se
a57se

@Bent

Pace returned, how'd that work out?

Folk returned, how'd that work out?

It isn't all BAD!

marcus81

@bob@a57se Buffalo could become a force with another no.1 receiver opposite Johnson

a57se
a57se

@levi

The mock I was using had 4 QB's gone by pick 5 and it would take a lot more of our draft picks to trade up that high so I didn't think that was worth discussing.

Sammy Watkins is the consensus no.1 WR prospect and according to most, as can't miss as it gets.

Brendan
Brendan

@marcus81 All 57 did was ask if you, marcus81, would do it. Whether Idzik, or Random Team X would do it is a different matter entirely.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan

The Compensation is actually more then what the Bills got last year from St. Louis for the same trade.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan

     Yes it is, the one I am referencing has the Vikings at 8, Buffalo at 9 (and taking Watkins, FWIW) and us at 14.

@a57se @bob Beat writer of the year and GM of the day?  Maybe we should just give bob the head coach job while we're at it.

Can you fill in at left guard too, bob?

bob
bob

@a57se@bob

lol ..thank you thank you thank  you very much.

Johnsbodybyvi Ledo
Johnsbodybyvi Ledo

@brenden its not silly because I wouldnt be giving up a 1st rd pick for Cutler. I could have Cutler, who is younger, plus match him up with 1st rd WR.

a57se
a57se

@djf1

That usually includes a physical before the deal is consummated! But that is always a wise move!

a57se
a57se

@bob

    I would be more surprised if Buffalo took a QB early then if we did and I don't think we will. I could see them upgrading their O'line early as well. There are some fine Tackle prospects available that would really help them.

This is a pretty deep WR class so there will be good options in later rounds.

  I just think Watkins could be one of those special guys that years from now, the teams that pass on him will be regretting that decision and moreso, their fans.

bob
bob

@Brendan@marcus81

That to if a good QB comes when Buffalo picks that would be hard one to pass up.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se So do the Jets. I don't see Marcus writing swan songs about this team, though.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan

   I think they took some time learning Pettines' defense which didn't help them earlier in the season and they have had numerous injuries at RB and WR as well.

I get your point about Manuel, but they do have a really nice mix when everyone is healthy.........

Brendan
Brendan

@marcus81 They lost by 13 to the Browns (who the Jets just beat). They lost by 18 to the Saints (who the Jets beat). They lost by 21 to Tampa (who the Jets beat).

They're a bad offensive team.

a57se
a57se

@marcus81

You are correct and they would still have their choice of Evans or Lee but also all the TE prospects.

marcus81
marcus81

@Brendan@marcus81 Bills have played the top teams tight and barely lost, with another top receiver they can pull out those close games. Manuel has played well enough for a rookie.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan

The thing with Bortles, from what I understand, is that some scout said that at least one team with a likely top ten pick had Bortles at the top of their list.

This is why he showed up all of the sudden and now everyone is trying to guess who that team could be.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan

   I think they have to wait until AFTER their Bowl Games before signing an agent so there probably isn't much to be gained declaring before then anyway. The deadline is usually mid January like the 13th or something, if I remember correctly but that is just a matter of filling out the paperwork and submitting it which the Agents handle anyway!

Just a template where they fill in the details.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I didn't realize that none of them had. They've got like 3 weeks to declare, right?

a57se
a57se

@Brendan

    Not that I am aware of but neither has Bridgewater, Manziel or Hundley yet people are mocking them all over the place!

a57se
a57se

@marcus81

    We will likely have 12 draft picks for this draft. There are probably not going to be 12 roster spots open for rookies. We would still have 10 draft picks after this trade. Wouldn't it be prudent to try and maximize our haul?

I was thinking we might even try and trade a pick or two for a 2015 pick......

Brendan
Brendan

@marcus81 Okay, so you wouldn't do it. That's fine, I was just clarifying 57's question because your firs tanswer made me think you didn't read it right the first time.

marcus81
marcus81

@Brendan@marcus81we need to draft as may players as we can and sort out who can help out the team, with the spot we have we should be able to get what we need, I still say Izzy doesn't trade up.
