TJB Year in Review: May 2013

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Here’s a quick look at all the happenings from the Jets of the last year, month by month.  Next up, May 2013 …

Things started quieting down some in May, but with the drafting of Sheldon Richardson, the Jets had plans to “move” Quinton Coples.  Coples knew he had to help out the line more.  Willie Colon was ready to make the jump to guard.

geno-martyWith the draft finished, the Jets let go of some of their front office staff and then did it again.

Deadspin lent some detail to Geno Smith’s firing of his agents.  Football Outsiders said Geno was the best QB prospect of the class based on the Lewin Career Forecast model, Jaws came to Geno’s defense. Geno knew he had to brush off criticism, unless I guess it was from himself.  Geno settled of the Jay-Z’s agency to rep him.

Geno wasn’t the only one to fire his agency.  Dee Milliner moved quick by firing his agency and finding a new one not long after.  Joe Willie wanted Sanchez to win the QB job. Then Sanchez went out and threw three picks in practice.  Word was some teammate(s) wanted Sanchez gone.

The Jets had some camp players who were arrested and then terminated.  Then Goodson was caught in a similar circumstance.

Joe McKnight made it known he wanted to be a big part of the team in 2013.  The team started signing their draftees at the eve of rookie camp.  Geno pulled a page from the Sanchez playbook and held a players meeting before the start of camp.

Random stuff? We learned Tommy Bohanon had some family ties to Idzik.  Were the Jets looking to push Sanchez out? Antonio Allen wanted to become the starter at safety and Dawan Landry was ready to step in.  Did Matt Simms already have the inside track in May?

Brian, I don't remember you doing this kind of Year in Review before.  I like it. Good stuff!

Firing Rex after this season makes no sense. The team has overachieved and he's in the process of building a nasty and dominant defense. Starting from scratch after a rebuilding year would just set the team back another year. Plus, I want to see if Rex can reach his potential as an HC. I view him like I viewed Walt Michaels. Sure, there's a downside to his personality, but the upside more than offsets it.

Hey guys I'm really enjoying these month by month reviews.

I can't believe how many people really think they know what John Idzik is going to do when it comes to Rex Ryan, I mean Idzik just loss his Dad a short time ago and I don't think he's looking to have the media all over him for firing Rex just because he isn't his hand picked guy, people forget that Idzik was hired to work with Rex and over time pinpoint his strengths and weakness. Everyone has their minds made up that Rex can't coach the team unless they extend his contract, that's baloney in my book. The media is currently hard at work building the Rex must stay campaigne just so they can tear Idizk apart, just like they tore Rex apart at the beginning of 2013 and Woody Johnson I might add for keep Rex after firing Mike T.

Oh this media, oh this fan base, and oh this snake bit franchise who work so hard against one another. I will always be a Jet fan nothing will ever change that, because I just can't wait for the day when they win one again and in unisons everyone will be happy for at least one day. This has been a very frustrating year depending on where your expectation level for the team was, I expected 8-8 or 9-7, even with rookie QB. So no matter what happens in the last game I won't be to upset or to happy.

The Jets have to do what's best for Business

@SackDance99  Idzik seems to be a pragmatic guy and I wonder that if at the end of the day, he's thinking to himself, "Where am I going to find another guy who is better than what I have here? He's flawed, but there's no one better on the defensive side of the ball, and after I stripped this team down and gave him chicken p**p to work with, he still made a decent chicken salad. He's changed the culture of the franchise, given it an identity, the players support and play hard for him, and even the fickle Jets fans love him."

@DrJonathanReefer

I would be happy with that....Rex is an excellent talent evaluator from what I've seen.

Good post. I predicted 7 wins this season, knowing we were in a rebuild with a rookie QB, a new system, many new coaches and severe salary cap constraints that Idzik did a great job with considering. I also knew our defense would be close to a top 10. I am happy with the way the season went, and a win tomorrow, will even make it better. But my real eye is on this off season. I am very optimistic and I cant say that I have been like that the last couple of seasons watching the offense get neglected and decimated, but we will have a new direction and with plenty of resources in draft picks and $$$ to right the ship. The future is bright and we exceeded expectations this season. All in all, I am very satisfied.

I agree. And, I think Idzik saw the best camp at Cortland. Lots of young and unproven players were coached up into a 5-4 start. Injuries, some coaching errors and the flaws in the young players started to be exploited, but Idzik should have been comforted that if you give Rex talent, he can get the most out of it. Plus, having an HC that free agents want to play for makes his job easier.
