TJB’s 2014 New York Jets free agent tracker

VERNER

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

As the negotiating period of free agency begins Saturday March 8th at noon, here’s the quick list and links to articles about players which the Jets are already tied to in terms of some level of interest, or Jets players who have already been retained by the team.

We’ll keep this somewhere on the front page for the next few days, see the full list after the jump.

EXTERNAL FREE AGENTS

WR Emmanuel Sanders (PIT) — Sanders was the first name to come to light almost a month ago along with the now re-signed Eagle Jeremy Maclin.  Sanders would provide the Jets a deep threat to stretch the field but the team shouldn’t expect more than 40-50 receptions from a player like Sanders in the Jets offense.  No word on whether talks have progressed since the start of free agency.

WR Andrew Hawkins (CIN) — The restricted free agent was low-tendered by the Bengals and according to our own Jake Steinberg, the Jets are reported to have interest in him.

WR Andre Roberts (ARI) — Draftinsider‘s Tony Pauline told us on the podcast this week that the Jets could demonstrate some level of interest in the 24 year old unrestricted free agent who had over 700 yards with the Cardinals in 2013.  Roberts is joining the Washington Redskins.

WR James Jones (GB) — Draft insider Tony Pauline reports that the Jets have “heavy interest in Jones“.

TE Jermichael Finley (GB) — The Jets were reported to have been snooping around the Packers tight end who is recovering from a serious spine injury.  He has yet to be cleared medically and is beginning team visits.

TE Brandon Pettigrew (DET) — Named among potential targets in a NY Daily News report alongside the news of the signing of Jeff Cumberland’s new deal.

TE Ed Dickson (BAL) – Named among potential targets in a NY Daily News report alongside the news of the signing of Jeff Cumberland’s new deal.

TE Scott Chandler (BUF) – Named among potential targets in a NY Daily News report alongside the news of the signing of Jeff Cumberland’s new deal.

OG Geoff Schwartz (KC) — Tony Pauline reported that the Jets might be looking to ground their offense in 2014 and Schwartz could be a part of that plan.  Schwartz has signed with the Giants.

OG Zane Beadles (DEN) — Same as above, but Beadles is nowhere near the talent that Schwartz is.  Beadles has signed with the Jaguars.

OG Jon Asamoah (KC) — While Schwartz displaced Asamoah due to injury, Asamoah is a solid started and has been linked to the Jets Friday night in a report by the NY Daily News.  Depending on what the Chiefs decide to do between Schwartz and Asamoah, the Jets might pursue the other.  Asamoah has signed with the Falcons.

QB Mike Vick (PHI) — The Jets have been closely tied to Vick since the opening of free agency.

QB Josh McCown (CHI) — It is unclear as of yet, but the Jets are rumored to have some level of interest in the Bears backup.

QB Matt Schaub (HOU) — This is a little convoluted, but apparently if the Jets were to cut Mark Sanchez, Schaub might be in the mix for the Jets as a potential veteran backup to  quote-unquote push Geno Smith.

QB Shaun Hill (DET) — Seth Walder from the New York Daily News reported that the Jets have “some interest” in the 34-year old.

RB Maurice Jones-Drew (JAX) — The Jaguars running back is also on the Jets’ “Person of Interest” according to Mehta.

CB Alterraun Verner (TEN) — Brian Costello from the New York Post reported that the Jets are interested in the emerging young corner.

CB Vontae Davis (IND) — Draft insider Tony Pauline reports that the Jets are “going hard after Davis“.  Davis was re-signed by the Colts.

CB Captain Munnerlyn (CAR) — Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that the Jets are “interested in Munnerlyn“.

S Donte Whitner (SF) — The former 49er is on the Jets’ Persons of Interest list, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.  Whitner was signed by the Browns.

S Chris Clemons (MIA) — Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the former Dolphin is “on the Jets’ radar“.

S TJ Ward (CLE) — Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Browns safety is “also on the “Persons of Interest” list“.  Ward has signed with the Broncos.

RETURNING PLAYERS

K Nick Folk — Folk has been franchised by the Jets. The kicker tag is worth $2.9 million.  Folk was signed to a multiyear deal on Tuesday.

DB Ellis Lankster — The Jets re-signed Lankster to a two-year deal worth appromixately $1.6 million.

DB Darrin Walls — The Jets signed Darrin Walls to a two-year deal worth approximately $1.9 million.

TE Jeff Cumberland — Friday night the Jets agreed to terms with their tight end on a three year deal worth a maximum of $5.7 million with $1 million guaranteed.

LB/ST Nick Bellore — The Jets tendered RFA Nick Bellore at the lowest rate worth approximately $1.4 million. The Jets have right of refusal to match any offer sheet within five days.

PLEASE send us any news or notes we’re missing that you’ve seen (with links) at thejetsblog@gmail.com!

Seriously with the cap room the Jets have and only really Mohammed W looking to get paid in the near future, the Jets better start making some moves! The draft can't be the answer, considering how poorly they draft outside round 1.

Well Byrd and Verner signed! Great to see the Jets building a better team!

i actually wouldn't mind getting  Revis back although we prob won't cause he'll want an insane amount of $$  but if  the jets can bring Revis and cro back and maybe move Cro to S??

Glad to see the Jets haven't panicked. The Tanny days are behind us at last.

Is it me or did the Jets front office forget today was the start to FA??

We should have signed some star players by now with the large cap we have!

So, Tuesday. Folk. Jets panic on the Internets. Prol'y be "same old Jets" stories firing up from the beat crew soon. Idzik certainly has some stones to keep calm.

It's been fun, but tomorrow Idzik had better get serious and pounce. If he really wants someone, he can't procrastinate while they sign with someone else. Hopefully all the homework is done, the offers set and he won't hesitate. He's already proven he's thoughtful and deliberate, but now it comes down to a combination of craftiness and speedy execution. You don't want to overpay, be used by the FA to get a better offer or lose your targeted man to  another team, so it's a delicate dance. Can Idzik get jiggy or does he have two left feet? Practice is over: the music starts tomorrow. :)

Wheres sproles, Mccluster a guy like that, that we can stick any where and he can hit the home run on any given play or get big chunks of yards in the slot or out of the backfield or in the screen game. Burleson, we need veteran leadership and hes a good # 2.

My ideal free agency/1st rd n 3rd rd of draft

Sproles or MCcluster

Burleson

Jermichael Finley

Any Guard that's legit enough to play on our line.

1st Rd. Watkins trade or 1st, 2nd, and a 5th rounder to get him.

3 rd. Skov MLB Wisconsin (Compares to David Harris) Since none of you gave a damn about Cro earlier who cares about harris save even more money for now the empty corner spot along with safety and guards we have to fill.

Bring back Colon to start and be a vet leader that we desperately need. With our defense if we get a corner and safety if we get the right skill players and Geno learns a lot this off season in a weak AFC were a win NOW!!!! Team like I said all last year theres no such thing as a rebuild in the NFL!!!!

Give me Verner, Whitner, McCluster, Tate, Howard and Asamoah. We can afford that.

My offseason plan

Sign Verner at 10 per

sign tate at 6-7 per

sign any of the solid veteran guards out there at 4-5 per

bring back howard

whitner tweet hinting at jets signing? If so release landry, bring back reed...jets safeties whitner allen reed draft pick bush

sign or draft a pass catching option out of backfield by rd 3 sproles? Deanthony thomas?

draft wr no matter what rd 1 since an impact guy WILL be there, prefer taking the upside of a 6'5 benjamin personally

sign a vet for the pass rush, interested to see jared allen in a jets uni if price isn't high

First 5 picks in no order besides wr rd 1, then another wr rb olb and safety

bring back sanchez on the cheap as backup

Was doing some thinking earlier and if we were to go balls in and go after the best receiving option/ game changing player we can possibly scoop up for 2014, what would we have to do/ give up. So I thought Sammy Watkins. You got to figure your jumping into the top 5 for him, which is pretty heavy and its going to cost you. I really dont know how to gauge how many draft picks it would cost to jump to 5, so i used the Draft Value Chart on Walter Football (Dont know how accurate it is give it a look http://walterfootball.com/draftchart.php ) and apparently we would have to give up every pick we own in this draft just to receive the 5th overall pick and yes that means our 2 thirds. That sounds absurd, but once again I don't know how accurate this chart is but what I do know is that adding a guy like Watkins to the team and taking care of everything else via FA would be BALLSY. And generally just superbly stupid considering how deep this draft is that the skill position players. But what if we did that? What if we went balls in for Watkins? What would it cost us and would it be worth it? Just an idea I had that I wanted to throw out there see what you guys think.

I just just talk to my buddy Sir Barks A lot. and he say The NY Giants are very interested and are willing to pay good money for Verner..

If Ware hits the open market I think that changes everything, putting that man on the edge of this line is a game changer! Our GM is smart he wants to see what shakes out in the market over all. If this off season we walk away with Ware, Verner, Roberts & a good OG I will be happy as heck during the draft watching us fill out our other needs.

I just read down the board where Bent said the Jets like Dickman better than Finley, Pettigrew and Chandler.

I have to admit that surprises me, but I never doubt Bent's sources.

dobermite

With Verner we get five years younger at the position and we won't have to be concerned about a possible degenerative hip, and this kid can flat-out ball too. 4 Years 40 Million, he's worth it and he's only 25, so we'll get four top level years.

As for what else I would do, Asamoah, Schwartz or Beadle, again we get younger and healthier than Colon.

Then I bring in another TE; Finley, Pettigrew or Chandler, and Hakeem Nix on a one year deal. He said he's open to taking a one year deal so he can raise his stock for next year and I would give it too him, then draft a WR in RD 1, Cooks or Lee, then an edge rushing OLB like DeMarcus Lawrence or Trent Murphy in RD 2 and a FS like Keith McGill in RD 3, and with our second 3 I take another WR, perhaps someone ike Paul Richardson or Brandon Coleman.

Lastly, instead of paying top dollar for Byrd, I re-sign Crow on the cheap and move him to safety.

Thats my plan, whose down with it?

Completely disagree. It pays to approach FA with caution and not over pay.

@Indiana Jones today was def disappointing....but until they miss out on Verner, or dare i say Revis, then i wont flip out.......still plenty of quality players out there...

Speedy execution and FA is more often than not a bad combo.

dabronx

@D'Apostraphe Lewis  - If the reports are true regarding Howard asking for 7M+, then I'd let him go. There are plenty of better OT free agents out there who would cost just as much or a smidgen more. - Eugene Monroe, Veldheer, Collins, Saffold, Albert.  Howard was rated #47 by PFF offensive tackle rankings. He is a very good pass blocker and decent rushing blocker. He is not elite and is not worth #1 RT money.

The Jets 1st, 2nd and 5th won't get Watkins. Makes more sense to move up and get Evans.

I agree 100 percent to trade up for watkins

Kirk Michael

And brother after all the cuts we can afford a lot after our resignings and the draft

signings well still have 30 mil give or take I believe

Kirk Michael
Kirk Michael

Yea forgot the defensive side of the ball ofcourse I want whitner, clemons as a back up if cant land him. Verner im not sold on becuz I cant wrap my head around cutting a guy for so called "cap space" then paying a younger guy more. But another thing I'm worried getting into long term deals with Verner and Whitner because were gonna need to sign Mo which would be the best time after were done with all of our fa,draft, etc because were gonna have coples after he blows it up and I have a feeling hell be alittle different about doe then Wilk and Big Rich is only gonna get better and two years from now hes gnna wanna his doe and if Dee works out n G works out were screwed. So Idk about 20 mil on to players in the dback field.

No on Benjamin. Not a first round talent.

dobermite

The chart is accurate, Mike, its the real chart NFL GM's use. It was established precisely because teams usually deal picks while the draft is in progress, sometimes while they are on the clock, so there is not much time to haggle over what constitutes a fair price. Therefore the GM's agreed to establish an actual value chart for draft picks and use it as their guide when trading picks. The trade is not always dead on accurate according to the chart, but its definitely the guide they use and its usually pretty lose when PICKS ONLY (and no players) are being exchanged. That said, to trade up from #18 to #4 or #5 it would cost the Jets somewhere in the area of our 1st RD Pick (#18), our 2nd RD Pick (#49) and both of our 3's.

Of course the Jets could always offer this years 1 and next years 1 if they don't want to get wiped out of this draft entirely, and that would be more likely, though we would probably have to throw in one of our 3's in this years draft to ice the deal. So we would swap 1's, give them one of our 3's, and our #1 next year.

@dobermite  I don't know for sure they definitely like him better, but they are certainly interested.

@dobermite  you had me right up until you said:  Lastly, instead of paying top dollar for Byrd, I re-sign Crow on the cheap and move him to safety. .......but I'm with you! lol

Kirk Michael

@Jaime Rios Cruz I hear ya and what tthat does it allows us to resign talents like Wilk, Coples, Rich, Snacks, etc. but I think we need a few vet players hopefully Barnes comes back strong I heard it ws going. He played like a beast those 3-4 games but Landry also a vet, colon back would be nice, if were considering brick and mangold vets, but two or 3 would be even better n if I had to choose it would be colon, Whitner, and Burleson n then just draft a Ebron, Benjamin, and to get our little fast, quick, shifty, etc I.e. odell, cook, freeman, someone like that if we cant get MCcluster, Sproles, Hawkins, etc.

@scott g @Jon_Plon  you don't make the probowl as a one trick pony. He's a good young CB that would've fit very nice in a Rex Ryan's D.

If the Jets could land Watkins I wouldn't complain.Trade up for Evans makes more sense. Won't be as costly. Or Lee at 18 works. Any of those 3 is a big upgrade at WR.

Cro was bad last year

Kirk Michael
Kirk Michael

When we would of got good enough play out of Cro for four years cut him today save the 5 mil restructure and then have enough doe to sign two of those youngings and sign whitner. I prefer whitener over verner. If Idzik helped find browner, Sherman, etc all in the later rounds maybe he can find us one.

mustang66

b .ecause w e have the extra four picks I would be very tempted to switch number ones give up next year's one and one of these years 3 to get Sammy Watkins..we can get extra players through free agency by securing us your number one receiver without paying 10 million year for the first four years with Sammy. it would cost 10 million year to get what really is a number 2 receiver in Decker. wat kins would get about 2 Mill the first year leaving us eight million extra toward free agents and sinning Mo

@happycoco Yeah I realize I should have stopped at Paul Richardson or Brandon Coleman in the 3rd, I should have just ended it there. :-)

@Disgruntled - Okay we can scrap the Crow idea, I'm only lukewarm on that one anyway, but the rest is good, right?
