The Jets reportedly were targeting these two elite defensive players, but now they’re both off the board.
S Jairus Byrd will sign a six-year deal with the Saints (Schefter, March 11).
CB Alterraun Verner will ink a four-year deal with the Buccaneers (Rapoport, March 11).
Bent, TheJetsBlog.comDespite the rumors, I don’t believe there was anyone directly linking the Jets to having interest in signing Byrd, to whom the cap-strapped Saints somehow found a way to give a $9m a year deal, according to reports.
As for Verner, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News suggested on twitter that the Jets were “never considered serious suitors” for him and “not in the same financial ballpark”, so maybe the reports of serious interest there were overblown too. There was some concern that Verner would be a better fit on a team like Tampa where he might not be required to play as much press coverage, so he should fit in well with the Bucs. It was a surprise to see Verner accept a deal for less than $7m a year, but this could be a good sign for the market as the Jets continue to search for a cornerback.
