Let’s not anoint this kid the next best thing since sliced bread yet [...] He’s not that highly skilled of a pass rusher [...] If you’re highly skilled, you should be able to rush the passer, right?… Was he defensive player of the year in college? Was he an All-American? You’re comparing him to a first-ballot of Hall of Famer? … [He's] a run stuffer in a pass-first league.”

Sapp is a HOF'er and 100% right about the Jets & NY media getting ahead of themselves, but that's normal media BS. However, Sapp is wrong with all the college award & college  performance baloney. There are just too many variables wrt college play that make it bogus. If excelling in college was an indicator of a future NFL HOF'er, then Tebow would be in the Super Bowl and not trying to find a sandlot team to sign him as their starting QB.

Sapp is just so salty about how broke he is

He's not completely wrong. He does have to step up his pass rushing and it is way too early to say he's as good as any HOF. But, his reasoning is terrible. Because he didn't win some award that people vote on in college, that's why he's not that great in the NFL? So, I guess Samuel L Jackson is a bad actor since he's never won an Oscar.

What really matters is that SR keeps doing what he is doing and improve on his weaker areas. He no doubt, has all the tools to be one of the best D lineman in the league. His first season as a rookie was beast: and the scary part is, that he will get even better with technique and experience. What Sapp says doesn't mean anything at this point. In a few years the verdict will speak for itself.

Even though Sapp is a cornball and he probably said that all strictly for the pub, Im kinda glad he called out Sheldon. Boss Hogg seems like the type to use this as motivation to get better next year and show people that he's even BETTER than Sapp. Keep talking Warren.

I worked on a commercial with Warren a few years back.... and he was as pleasant as could be. Funny, self-depracating, said how much he liked Rex when i told him I was a Jets fan and i how I still vividly remember the draft when they chose Kyle Freakin Brady....

i'm sad to see him saying stuff like this, but it gets him in the news.. gets him tweeted about.... he becomes a story... and for a lot of these guys, particularly guys like Warren - big personality guys - they don't do well without the spotlight.

On another more manly front, Incognito fires Back :

"With respect to Martin’s claim that had no “tools” to deal with the non-existent bullying, the truth is just the opposite. Jonathan Martin is a professional athlete with millions of dollars, an agent, a lawyer, a union representative, a player personnel advocate, a mother who specializes in labor law, and his teammates and friends. Jonathan Martin had more support and love around him than almost any other person in the world. He never once indicated he was uncomfortable with the interactions between teammates and friends. Rather, Jonathan Martin was a full participant, who at times led some of the exact same pranks and gags and text and email exchanges he now claims, “crossed the line.”

@juunit

Sheldon Richardson's rookie sack total: 3.5

Warren Sapp's rookie sack total: 3.0

And I don't want to hear about Sheldon playing more, that's a product of how good he is. Sapp made a big jump to 9.5 in Year 2, so Sheldon would need a similar jump to 8+ sacks, IMO, to warrant a continued comparison, but I also think that is a very achievable milestone for the Baws.

Good observation....I am sure that is the toughest part of retiring for some of these guys.

@Brendan ...while being held. I can't overstate the man-crush I have for Sheldon. This line will be even more special next year. Boooyah!

@Hanknaples I don't know how you can possibly use "Manly" and "Incognito" in the same sentence. The guy is human trash.

@Hanknaples I find it shameful you find ways to support this a-hole on a rival team and continuously find ways to bash Rex and co. Who cares. This is a post about a guy that will outshine Mr. Sapp in due time. How about an insightful comment about our very own short yardage td master and all around beast.

Brendan

@Hanknaples Hank, if you ever come into a post about Sheldon Richardson with this garbage again, I will take all that good will we've built up the past weeks and light it on fire.

Not up in here, Hanker, NOT UP IN HERE!

Now as a penance, please say something nice about Mr. Hogg.

@Brendan@juunitYou may not want to hear more about Sheldon playing more, but whem you compare stats that is key. Ever hear about the asterisk next to Roger Maris' name?

WRT to Sheldon, I'm a big fan & believe he's the most promising draft choice we've had in a long time, including Mo. That does not mean he'll be better, but it does mean he had an extremely impressive rookie year. I only hope both of them have fantastic careers, our future draft choices have impressive rookie years and our other players step up.

joemustgo
joemustgo

@a57se@Steve ElliottThey way his "career" is progressing, he's going to wind up going on one of Dennis Rodman's "cultural exchanges" to N. Korea.

@Bytor @Brendan Throw in a healthy Coples for 16 games and....let's just say I will be insufferable watching Jets games next year.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bytor @Hanknaples The only relevance Incognito has to this discussion is the sad fact that he is likely out of the AFC East next year (if he comes back) and he won't get to be utterly embarrassed by Sheldon.

@frustjetfn Playing time is valid when it's elite playing time and not Brian-Winters-starting-for-the-future playing time. Sheldon would start on 32 out of 32 NFL teams, that's what my point is. The fact that he played so much and would have played that much anywhere in the league is why playing time counts for him.

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@a57se@frustjetfn@Brendan@juunitI wasn't debating that and wished our other rookies showed 1/100th of the skill that Sheldon exhibited, but playing time is NOT a valid plus for our other rookies b/c there were other considerations driving it. The best that can be said wrt Geno, Milliner, Winters & Bohanon is that we hope they show development this year b/c of it.

a57se
a57se

@frustjetfn@Brendan@juunit

He did say it was especially important if the player was an elite level performer which Sheldon clearly was.

there is no debate that he should have started all year.

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@Brendan@frustjetfn@juunitYou jumped the stark with that last remark: "Playing time as a rookie should be viewed as a positive"

Wow! Again too many variables. Geno, Milliner, Winters, Bohanon, etc. all played more than performance warranted due to desperation, low expectations for the 2013 season, rookie development and the politics of a GM's first draft class. Just because Geno was given 16 starts doesn't even mean he's a proven NFL quality starter. - That argument is specious.

idothis2
idothis2

@Brendan@frustjetfn@juunit Also, SR was playing with a dinged up shoulder so he couldnt throw(literally) Olineman around the way he did in the early part of the season and yet he still played like a man down there in the trenches

Brendan
Brendan

@frustjetfn @Brendan @juunit When comparing rookie seasons? Playing time is a category, especially if the player in question is an elite-level performer. Sheldon played at an elite level for his entire rookie season. Sapp didn't.

You can try and use playing time to knock down Sheldon's #'s, but that'd be ridiculous, since playing time as a rookie should be viewed as a positive.

idothis2
idothis2

@Brendan@Marcus Armstrong i thought Coples would come away with 3 sacks in the Saints game. he looked like he was applying more consistent pressure throughout the season than anyone else on the DL

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong Jets fans still hate on the guy. It's either out of sheer ignorance of his role (thinking he's a 4-3 type of OLB) or refusal to change a stance...I dunno. But Coples is improving and each day he practices in that defense the more comfortable he gets and the more he just goes out there instead of thinks. I couldn't be more bullish on Coples this year.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong @juunit @Brendan I compiled the #'s based on PFF's stats, but over the final half of the season Coples sacks+pressures+QB hits was top-10 for all 3-4 OLB and 4-3 DE's. If that's indicative of the future....yeahhh buddy.

Marcus Armstrong
Marcus Armstrong

@juunit @Marcus Armstrong @Brendan Good point. He had 5 after the bye/when healthy this year (8 games).

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong And it's completely reasonable, IMO. Wilkerson will get his by being a pure force of nature, Coples will easily get his on the edge if he stays healthy...the only question mark IMO is Sheldon. I think it's only a matter of time before he's a consistent near-double-digit sack guy from the interior, and his relentlessness means he'll scrape up sacks just by being around the QB on some plays.

I think 24 from those three is not only attainable, but depending on how the offseason goes it could end up being probably.

If this is what the defense looks like when it's built in Rex's image, I'm ready to sign up for a lifetime of Rex.

We are now in the right place....a thread about two players bickering and tryin to bully each other, only it's girly stuff compared to Incignito vs. Martin !!!!

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples Hank, I don't defend Martin. I don't even talk about him (or Incognito). You brought this up the other day and I even acknowledged that Martin did some shady/questionable things on his end, but that those things don't make Incognito a better person, he's still a scummy racist meathead.

Hank, this isn't important to me, nor will it ever be. The dirtiest player in the NFL (Incognito) turned out to be a dirty person, no shock there. Martin didn't handle things the way he should have, but that doesn't excuse Incognito's racist behavior.

If you insist on talking Dolphins, at least talk about something we'd like to hear about: their new GM hire.

@Hanknaples I just have no interest in bringing up the Incognito story again, that's all. He's a Dolphins headache, not one of ours.

Would you care to re-try posting your thoughts on the Hickey hire? Maybe livefyre is feeling less cranky today.
