What does the NFL playoff picture mean to the Jets?

Santonio Holmes, Phillip Adams

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

The playoff picture is finally coming into focus and the Jets seem an unlikely candidate, with one Wildcard spot seemingly up for grabs in the AFC, let’s take a quick look at the teams that are the most likely to be in the mix for that one remaining playoff spot along with the Jets.

For sake of ease, we’re cutting off (most of) the discussion at six wins.

RAVENS
W/L: 7-6 CONF: 6-4
Remaining Opponents: at Lions (7-6), vs. Patriots (10-3), at Bengals (9-4)
Our Thoughts: Other than the Chargers, this is the toughest remaining schedule for any single team. The Ravens might be able to coast with just one win here and still beat the Dolphins because of the Ravens win over Miami earlier in the season.

DOLPHINS
W/L: 6-7 CONF: 6-3
Remaining Opponents: vs. Patriots (10-3), at Bills (4-9), vs. Jets (6-7)
Our Thoughts: The biggest hurdle here comes this week against the 10-3 Patriots. The Pats can be susceptible to the Dolphins and the loss of Gronkowski makes the job that much more difficult. The Jets could be the last defense to keep the Dolphins out of the playoffs if the Ravens start to tumble.

CHARGERS
W/L: 6-7 CONF: 3-6
Remaining Opponents: at Broncos (11-2), vs. Raiders (4-9), vs. Chiefs (10-3)
Our Thoughts: Unless the Chiefs try to rest some players in the last week of the season, there seems almost no chance that the Chargers would get two more wins out of this schedule. The Chargers conference record is the real problem for them. Aside from them winning three straight while the Ravens drop two against New England and the Bengals they are essentially already out of it.

JETS (6-7)
W/L: 6-7 CONF: 3-7
Remaining Opponents: at Panthers (9-4), vs. Browns (4-9), at Dolphins (7-6)
Our Thoughts: It’s amazing how much those Bills and Dolphins losses hurt this team, even winning one of those games makes a huge difference.  For the Jets to get back into the playoff hunt the improbable needs to happen. The Jets need to win out to beat out the Ravens, who can’t win more than one game. Or, assuming the Ravens don’t win another game and the Dolphins and Jets emerge with eight wins, they would need to beat the Dolphins — who have to have already lost one game (Patriots is most likely) prior to their Week 17 matchup. It’s not impossible but certainly there’s a lot of contingencies that would have to take place for the Jets to truly be back in contention.

In the weeds: Look out for the Titans. The 8-5 Cardinals are getting hot at the right time, but the Titans somehow can beat Arizona this weekend, they might be home free to eight wins with the Jaguars and Texans the only teams remaining.

The Panthers are not the Raiders and although Rex will get the D formula from his Bro Rob, Geno isn't even close to a rookie version of Drew Brees. The fact is the Jets are trying everything in the book to limit Geno's mistakes, while a more talented rookie in year 1 (like RGIII, Luck or Wilson) starting his 14th game would be harder to defend. Geno is so raw at this level that he is just beginning to understand when to pull the ball down, move up in the pocket, slide around to avoid the sack and run if the D gives it to you. And there are many other skills that won't be addressed & hopefully developed until / if he has gotten another year under his belt.

I see Rex riding Ivory and Powell long and hard and putting in as many gimmick plays as possible. However, if Geno stares down his receivers, throws high or into double coverage and doesn't see and account for blitzers, I don't see Carolina dropping 2 out of 3 INT's like Oakland. This game can get ugly fast, if the O can't limit mistakes.

Taking a second look at playoff picture....eight losses and your done.  Dolphins and Chargers may be done by next Monday.  The Ravens last second win kills us, especially when they won on the back of a phantom pass interference call on a Viking LB....sometimes it pays to whine all the time like Harbaugh does....the biggest hurdle is the Jets beating Carolina this weekend, even more so than the Ravens losing 2 out of 3.

Man, Eli and Geno are duking it out for the Interception Crown.  Eli's got the advantage, though, because he plays full games.  I'm guessing Geno will jump into the lead this Sunday by throwing 4 before half time.

This format really sucks when you get into 3 people discussions. Have to go all the way down to see the most recent stuff? Can't this be tweaked & look more like the version we were just using?

Interesting.  The picture should be much more clear by next Monday.  We need all 3 teams ahead of us to lose, which is improbable, but not impossible given their opponents.

The bigger issue is beating The Panthers, imo.

As the artist formerly known as jetsman24, this is my first time on livefyre. Don't see what SNY saw in it but whatever.

Anyway, I can see the Jets beating Carolina if we can run the ball effectively. If Ivory gets going this could be a repeat of the New Orleans game for us, and them.

Luke Kuechly will pick Eugene off at least once. Boom! Opposite of bashful. Lufhsab!

@Ceifus Hornswoggle You're so precious. I'm just happy you've been here all along and didn't choose to come here after a win and trash the team or anything.

Very interesting stat.....I believe the 4p.m. games tend to come against better competition as well.

@ww85 It's already being tweaked, originally it would populate any reply to the bottom, it's not doing that for me anymore. Remember, even Disqus hit a point where it wouldn't seed comments anymore and they'd just lineup in a row after a couple initial replies.

@jetfuel Panthers are #1 rush D. I don't think running lanes will be open at all. I also don't think Ivory will be crushing through closed doors all game. We will have to air it out. Holmes will need to play like he did against Buff.

If we beat the Panthers, then we don't need the Dolphins to lose, because we'll need to beat them week 17, and at that point we'll have the tiebreaker over them.

@Brendan @ww85 Let's hope this gets better. The argument below about Gordon is close to impossible to follow & see who is insulting who.  I'm sure they can improve this. Just not pleasant.

or is it Spentmiles?

Or are they the same?

I don't know.

I think we need a translation post by Bent where he lists posters by their old names with their new ones so we know who we're dealing with!

I'll give you a hint.  Yesterday, I was at Captain D's, buying food for a homeless family that I'd hit with my Cadillac.  While standing in line, I heard this tremendous lip smacking and grunting.  I turned around and there, sitting at a table by himself, with a pile of shrimp the size of a truck tire, was none other than Geno himself.  I told the homeless family that I was too busy to buy them food and walked away as they wept and threw themselves at my feet.  I said to Geno, "Nice game!  You are really progressing."  He didn't even bother to wipe his hands as he picked up his cell phone and started texting.  Thinking he may not of heard me over the sound of his generous masticating, I said, "NICE GAME GENO!  I HOPE YOU PLAY WELL AGAINST THE PANTHERS!"  He looked up at me, so calm and collected, and said, "I ain't got no time for fans, no go'on."  Enraged, I picked up his tray of shrimp and smashed him over the head with it.  He tried to throw his drink at me, but it sailed over my head and was caught by one of the stinking vagrant children who ran passed Geno and out the back doors.  Geno just sat there pouting, his delicious shrimp scattered about him.

@ww85 @Brendan Yeah, it does get a bit messy when you have multiple people going in on the same discussion.

If I remember correctly, the Pettine game plans were always huge but they only scaled it back when Leonhard got hurt. Schotty's play sheets were notoriously long and confusing with 20 word calls........

Rex would go over the D- game plan withe Pettine but I don't recall him ever trimming plays with Schotty.....Schotty would do that with Sanchez, though. that is typical that the QB and OC go over the call sheet and dump whatever plays the QB doesn't like.

Brendan
Brendan

@ww85 @Brendan @DarrolRayFanClub @jetfuel I think Rex knows MM is a professional offensive coach, the same way Rex is a professional defensive coach, and I assume Rex is aware that Marty would take to his defensive-minded head coach dictating his offense the same way Rex would have felt if Brian Billick told him how to call his defense.

a57se
a57se

Rex was chided (Collision Low Crossers book as source) for NOT talking to Schotty about what he wanted from the offense as Rex preferred a hands off approach. According to the book Rex realized that he should have talked to Schotty about the offense more then he did and made sure they were on the same page......

I have no idea what any of that means for today and his relationship with MM.......

ww85
ww85

@jetfuel @ww85 Who do you think drove us to like 8 completions a game? Maybe it was MM. Just felt like Rex to me.

ww85
ww85

@jetfuel You think Rex will let MM unleash his attack? I doubt it. The Jets will probably try to keep it close & then when we are down by 14 start airing it out. Which will be too late. I'd love to be wrong & see some 1st down 8 yard out routes. Massive risk for pick 6, but I think it's about the only route that will be open against this pass D & these linebackers.
