What happened at Training Camp today?

SNY’s Andrew Johnston and Leonard Orman are at Jets Training Camp, and here’s their dispatch of what they saw and heard from Tuesday’s camp…

Orman:

  • Geno Smith is doing a good job of working with what the defense is giving him; “He’s rarely forcing balls into coverage.”
  • Calvin Pryor did not participate in practice. He rode a bike on the sidelines. Meanwhile, Jace Amaro worked on the side, but not on the field.
  • During a passing drill, Stephen Hill beat Dexter McDougle deep for a long completion from Michael Vick.
  • Dawan Landry had a good practice, picking off Vick and later getting a sack.
  • Willie Colon participated in 11-on-11 drills.
  • Demario Davis is “very vocal” on defense.
  • Tajh Boyd has been struggling at camp, but Matt Simms hasn’t been much better.
  • Greg Salas had a very good practice, as did Trevor Riley, who made a few good plays on special teams.
  • Nick Folk nailed a 50+ yard field goal near the end of practice.

Johnston:

  • To come…

perhaps it's time to take this down:

"Johnston:

  • To come…"

Was surprised to hear Francesa say a Geno-Vick permanant rotation could work for the Jets.    He cited  the Redskins of old (Sonny Jurgenson) as a template for it.  He did say Vick would be the reliever.

Damn it Johnston, you've had all day!

Thats all that matters. That, and no real injuries.

Cimin noted something that I saw as well.  Hakim is working with the safeties, while he still has a white jersey and WR number. He also works with the WRs and is on STs.  Anyone know what's up with that?

Stephen A. Smith suspended because of his comments.

For one week.

Is he FINALLY learning?? You think you think??

Well, he can't catch. And aren't DBs just receiver wannabes that couldn't catch?

@SackDance99

Like with McKnight? Kinda sounds like they're trying to find more uses for him to justify giving him a roster spot.

@Brendan And yeah, Coples looks lazy and uninterested...amirite, Manish?

@juunit That suspension is half of what Ray Rice got...think about that.

@juunit

They should have suspended him for two regular season games.

@Hanknaples You make it seem like he's spent the 4-year period learning the NFL game that Sanchez did.

Rookies struggle with forcing throws (and so do veterans, btw). Acting like he "finally" is getting it after just one year is misleading. This is the expected trajectory of a young QB that you plan on when you draft a QB high.

@Hanknaples  Geno took a beating on the boards here last year, but he could be a steal, was considered best QB in the draft by most teams, with better talent this year we could see what he may be really able to do

@Wilkershakes If you ever meet him, make sure you pronounce his name "Mah-NEESH" or he'll correct you.

Plus it's during what amounts to be sports radio offseason, when everyone is on vacation anyway. It's like suspending Rice for a preseason game. He'd rather hang out in south beach anyway.

@Wilkershakes @juunit If you think about it, it's pretty harsh. I'd say knocking your fiance unconscious is more than twice as bad as blaming victims of domestic abuse, and yet SAS got a full half of what the wifebeater got.

You..... are telling me.... THIS?

Me...the one that has been arguing what kind of an AIR HEAD Sanchez was/is from the moment we gave up 5:1 and you apologizing for him???

Hanknaples

@marcus81

Geno is on the brink of being a good QB. He is in fact a very good leader and his head seems to be on straight....which to me is the most important trait in a QB.

I'm actually pulling for this guy but I don't think he is to start if the Jets want to give the Pats a run for their $$ !!

I still expect the Vickeno to get a full run this year !!!

juunit

@marcus81 @Hanknaples

Don't really agree with that. He was considered the best QB by most people on the internet. The teams clearly disagreed with that ranking. Hence his making it to 39.

@SackDance99 @Wilkershakes

If I ever do meet him, I will continuously mispronounce his name as it's phonetically spelled, just like the old blues song, "Mannish Boy."

@Brendan @Wilkershakes No kidding.  'Get off your ar$e and do a lap, you fat piece of...!'

Seriously though, I only figure MM is taking the picture because Coples looks like he's ready to rip someone's heart out and eat it.  I love it.

@__fense @Wilkershakes @juunit He didn't blame the victim. He said people should learn not to provoke people into situations. A sentiment I agree with.

@__fense @Wilkershakes @juunit That was my point.  2 games is nothing for what he did.

tsjc68

@juunit @tsjc68 I hope the suspension memorandum referenced how Stephen A's comments "provoked" ESPN's suspension.

Brendan
Brendan

@Hanknaples My comment had everything to do with Geno and little to do with Sanchez.

My point was Geno is learning on the curve you hope for in a young QB. Acting like he should have figured that out a long time ago isn't reasonable.

And for the record, he did figure this out, in the final four games of the season last year. This is just a continuation of the play we saw from him at that time. The question wasn't "will Geno learn how to stop forcing it?" it was "can Geno keep doing what he did in December to give this team a chance to win every week?"

marcus81
marcus81

@juunit @marcus81 @Hanknaples  teams interviewed him and supposedly he had a diva image coming into the draft that hurt his stock, he has very good athletic talent, he just has to be a good decision maker to be a good QB

What is the proper punishment?

SackDance99
SackDance99

@tsjc68 @juunit Let's just also note ESPN's hypocrisy here.  SAS exists to be provocative and ESPN has him on with Skip specifically for that purpose.  But, when he finally crosses the line, ESPN disciplines him at a time when he's also rumored to be taking his act to SiriusXM.  What a joke.

Hanknaples

@Brendan

" The question (is) "will Geno learn how to stop forcing it?" (so he) "can Geno keep doing what he did in December to give this team a chance to win every week?"

There I fixed that for you !!

@Disgruntled Jets Fan  As far as I know he said, even though the man is completely at fault, you still got beat up, or worse, so maybe you should try to avoid that.

Same way Limbaugh didn't say McNabb wasn't good because he was black. He said McNabb wasn't good, and no one told him because he was black.

Perception is reality and these guys should avoid saying anything that could be taken the wrong way.

__fense
__fense

@Hanknaples @Brendan That doesn't make any sense. Why would he have to learn something different in order to keep doing the same thing he was doing months ago?

Or forced to watch William Devane doing his buy gold commercials and Progressive Insurance commercials with Flo.  24 hours would be torture. 12 for both.

@__fense @Brendan

Because a HABIT (good or bad) becomes INVOLUNTARY and it takes constant reinforcement to break !!

Brendan
Brendan

@__fense Yeah..what?

Anyway, Geno is on the path we were hoping for. And with more explosive players around him he can reserve his risk-taking for players actually worth taking risks for. What a concept!
