WR Evans placed on injured reserve

The Jets placed rookie wide receiver Shaq Evans on injured reserve Tuesday, when he had season-ending shoulder surgery (Jets, Aug. 19).

Rex Ryan said earlier this month the injury, sustained Aug. 5, was bad enough that season-ending IR was a possibility for Evans.

The Jets took Evans  in the fourth round of May’s draft. He was the Bruins’ leading receiver in 2012 and 2013, when he was named All-Pac 12 honorable mention.

It’s been a tough month for Jets rookie receivers. Jalen Saunders, the other receiver the Jets took in the fourth round, had what was described as a “medical event’ while driving his car Friday morning. The team has been mum about the health of Saunders, who didn’t play against Cincinnati Saturday and is out for Friday’s game against the Giants.

I think this was a split draft, either we took help now type players....Mcdoggle, Armano, Prior, Saunders or folk they knew were long term development guys, Boyd, Doz., George, Dixon etc that I think they knew would not make team, but hope to have n practice squad.....it will be interesting to see how many they can squeeze onto that, hope they don't get claimed by other teams.

Interesting guy for me is Reilly, he's a bit old to look at as a project I just wonder if he has a spot on this team, the LB situation is going to be the hardest to call, the starters are clear but it's packed behind them, even if they keep 9 you have guys like Davis, Garrett, IK, George, Reilly, Edds, and Barnes going for 3 spots...intersting

Idzik is lucky he at least drafted Pryor and IK.....2 for 12 ain't bad....

Heck maybe he'll go for 3 for 12 if Amaro graduates NFL kindergarden

Doesn't he have to clear waivers before going on IR?

Is there an IR limit?

One of the things that stood out on tape was how his shoulders looked so susceptible to injury.

How Idzik could have missed that is beyond me.

Arrghh.  I was so hoping for Manziel.  I hope Hoyer gets dinged and the Browns are forced to play Johnny.  Mike deserves a third degree burn.

About half of the picks came in the sixth and seventh round.  Do you expect immediate starters?  I don't think you have a clue.

@bradysucks Hitting on 25% of your draft picks is pretty good, especially if the 1st and 2nd rounders are considered hits.

Yes.  However, I believe teams have the option to put them on IR but still have them count against the roster limit until the 90-to-75 cutdown date after which they would not be required to pass through waivers.  The Jets must have taken this option which would mean that tweets like this one are incorrect:

With Evans to IR, #Jets roster down to 88. Will go to 87 when they IR McDougle. Have to be at 75 by next Tuesday.

Claiming how this past draft should be graded, before preseason is even over, is extremely premature. 3 years from now we will know. My prediction is that at least 6 of these 12 picks will become starters/ solid contributors. But we will revisit this question in January 2017.

@Bent @a57se  aren't teams able to retain players that are put on IR? I know the Pats just picked up someone else's injured player but don't know if that player was also released

That player was waived/injured, which means they have to clear waivers to revert to IR.  Obviously the team in question needed to free up a roster spot and took that risk.

Evans has been added to IR but will still count towards the roster limit until the 27th so he doesn't need to clear waivers.
