Berry Grateful for Chance to Play With Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Troubled cornerback Aaron Berry is getting a second chance with the Jets and one that he says he’s looking forward to taking full advantage of in the coming days.
There’s no doubt that Berry, who spent the last two years in Detroit, is a talented cornerback, but two arrests this past July underscore that he has been troubled in maintaining his focus on football. But in Berry, the Jets are taking a calculated risk in signing a player who if he’s able to stay out of trouble off the field, can create problems for wide receivers on it.
“[I’ve got] a second opportunity a lot of people don’t get, I will take full advantage of it and help this team win some games,” Berry said on Wednesday following his first practice with the team.
On Monday, Jets head coach Rex Ryan talked about giving Berry this second chance, saying that he has made mistakes himself. After doing their research and vetting the player, the Jets felt comfortable in signing Berry.
When he arrived at the team facility earlier this week, Berry did meet with Ryan and he seems to understand the significance of the chance the Jets are giving him.
“He pretty much told me that he’s a guy who feels everybody deserves a second chance. He wants me to come in here and respect everybody in the locker room, just be disciplined,” Berry said. “If they take me in, I need to make sure I don’t make the same mistakes as I did before.”
He could be a tremendous fit for the Jets. A physical cornerback, Berry likes to play on the line and jam receivers, something that neither Kyle Wilson nor Antonio Cromartie have shown a willingness to do. He excels in man-to-man coverage, which is also another tremendous fit for the Jets.
“The scheme they do is man-to-man and that’s what I did relatively well in Detroit,” Berry said. “Just put me out there and play man – that’s what I do best.”
As far as if other teams had interest in him, well, Berry certainly left that open for debate.
“I was told not to answer that,” Berry said.
