As we’ve done in years past, we’re doing our Roster Countdown series of posts as we get ready for the regular season. See the full list of players we’ve covered so far here.
Position: Defensive Line
Height / Weight: 6’5” 305 lbs
26 23 / Experience: R
College: Iowa State
Background: McDonough attended Valley High School in West Des Moines and was noted for many accolades and all-conference teams even then. McDonough then attended Iowa State as a defensive lineman and was selected to Phil Steele’s College Football Preview 2012 second-team All-Big 12. An amazing feat considering the number of allergies and illnesses he battled back from during his time in college which caused him to lose upwards of 70 pounds. While at Iowa State, McDonough finished with 89 tackles, 5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. McDonough impressed during his pre-draft process where he put up 37 reps on the 225 pound bar.
2013 Projection: Ryan loves strong, hardworking defensive linemen and while McDonough didn’t have the storied NCAA career due to his illnesses and allergies, but he sure seems like an upside player. Rex Ryan jokingly referred to McDonough as Mike DeVito (who wore the #70 before him) so while he might be hard-pressed to make the roster, he seems like a good candidate for the practice squad in his first year with the team.
