As we’ve done in years past, we’re doing our Roster Countdown series of posts as we get ready for the regular season. See the full list of players we’ve covered so far here.
Position: Offensive Line
Height / Weight: 6’5” 308 lbs
Age: 22 / Experience: R
Background: Aboushi attended Xaverian High School where he started all four years on the defensive and offensive lines. Rivals named him the third best offensive lineman in the state of New York and 23 at overall at his position. At Virginia, he began to blossom as he gradually saw his playing time increased. He earned ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors in 2010, 2011, and 2012 as a full time starter. As a senior, Aboushi earned All-ACC honors and graded out above 90% in every game while averaging 10 knockdown blocks. He was drafted by the Jets in April with their fifth round selection.
2013 Projection: By all indications, Aboushi’s skill set appears to be best suited at right tackle or guard in the NFL. The Jets, in recent years, have prided themselves on having versatile lineman and Aboushi is no exception as he was moved around during mini-camp and OTAs. Regardless of his position, veterans Willie Colon, Stephen Peterman, Austin Howard and D’Brickashaw Ferguson are ahead on the depth chart and fellow rookie Brian Winters is generating a considerable buzz from the coaches sans pads. Aboushi is almost certain to make the roster and barring an unforeseen meltdown or injury to the starters (/knocks feverishly on wood), he will spend much of the year working with Coach Devlin on improving his technique and adapting to the next level.
