As we’ve done in years past, we’re doing our Roster Countdown series of posts as we get ready for the regular season. See the full list of players we’ve covered so far here.
Background: Spadola is a Jersey prospect, hailing from Howell, NJ, just about an hour from Florham Park. Spadola was named a “Super 100 Athlete” of New Jersey and was named an All-Shore Team honoree while in high school. Spadola was a big part of a successful Lehigh program in the Patriot League which has only had six losses in the last three seasons. Spadola finished his career at Lehigh with the school’s second highest overall receiving yards and receptions. In 2011 Spadola set a single season Patriot League record with 96 receptions for 1,614 yards and eleven touchdowns. Unfortunately, 2011 was also the season in which he was suspended in the FCS quarterfinals for a Twitter message with a racial slur — something that Spadola owned and was contrite about. As a senior, Spadola contracted mononucleosis and was unable to play in two games while being adversely affected in three more. As a result, he was unable to break his junior record totalling 57 catches for 571 yards and four scores.
2013 Projection: As currently constituted, the receiver position has room for at least one, and maybe two undrafted or reserve/future players to make the roster. While Holmes, Hill and Kerley’s roster spots seem secure, the group gets cloudy behind that trio. Spadola was ranked by PFW as the highest graded offensive player in the Jets UDFA class and might have dropped in the draft due to playing in the FCS, his production as a senior, and the suspension. Overall he’s a capable productive receiver with something to prove. Spadola will need to prove his value to the team on special teams first and foremost, but could have some upside as a receiver given some time to adjust to the NFL game.
