As we’ve done in years past, we’re doing our Roster Countdown series of posts as we get ready for the regular season. See the full list of players we’ve covered so far here.
Background: Reuland was a blue-chip recruit of out Mission Viejo, the same high school that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez attended. Reuland went to Stanford, a school which has a history of NFL tight ends (Teyo Johnson, Alex Smith, Coby Fleener) and Reuland seemed to get lost in the shuffle when he came out last year. Not only did he compete as a senior against Fleener, but this year’s two drafted tight ends from Stanford, Zach Ertz (2nd round to the Eagles) and Levine Toilolo (4th round to the Falcons). When the Jets picked him up last year, it was thought that he would solely be used as the team’s blocking tight end, but he’s proven that he can catch a pass or two as well.
2013 Projection: The top to bottom depth of the tight end position for the Jets is not on par with what most teams around the league might have and that is concerning. Winslow is an upside pickup much like Garrard was, but can he remain healthy after not being able to play last season due to pain in his knee? Cumberland has shown some promise as a pass-catcher, but his blocking still needs to improve and this was supposed to be his year with Dustin Keller leaving for the Dolphins. Hayden Smith and Reuland are the next two on the depth chart and the team will likely only take three players at the position into the season. Reuland will be competing for a spot should Winslow be able to make it through camp.
