The Star-Ledger has reported that an MRI of safety Eric Smith’s surgically repaired left knee was negative after he was injured making a tackle yesterday. He only suffered a sprained MCL however, it appears the Jets may be without Smith for the remainder of the preseason as the injury heals.

Contrary to popular belief, the Jets could use Smith’s presence as the safety situation is still uncertain. LaRon Landry’s health continues to be number one priority and the Jets have been diligent in preserving him as much as they can. Rookies Josh Bush and Antonio Allen are still relatively unknown commodities and while the latter has shown promise, the Jets could still use that veteran presence that has been deferred from Jim Leonhard to the injured Smith.
