CB Dimitri Patterson suspended for ‘remainder of preseason’

Jets cornerback Dimitri Patterson, who didn’t show for Friday’s exhibition against the Giants, has been suspended for the rest of the preseason, the team announced on Twitter Tuesday night (Jets, Aug. 26)

The team said it would not release more details about Patterson’s punishment, which reportedly will include a fine. He can return to the team next Monday. The Jets, who play Philadelphia Thursday in their preseason finale, open Sunday Sept. 7 at home against Oakland.

NFL teams have to make their final roster cuts by Saturday.

That's like being suspended from school, but not recess.

ah cmon guys he just wants to win like santonio.  Get stephen a. smith on the phone he'll make excuses for him.

It is a sad situation to say that Mr. No Show and Wilson are our best healthy cornerbacks. Idzik is looking...hard, I'm sure!

So, their idea of punishment was to give him exactly what he wanted. Geniuses!

Patterson wins this year's Santonio Holmes Award for "Signing A Big Contract, Then Getting As Close As You Can To Blowing Off The Pain & Boredom Of Camp & The Preseason And Just Showing Up For Opening Day…"

Dimitri writes that he's humbled by this, and wants to thank all the little people who helped him… the Jets trainers, his agent, his teammates who never noticed that he was gone, the ticket takers at Disney World...

Well he must of had a pretty good reason I guess.

He's going to hear about this from his teammates for a long time...  No way Richardson doesn't ride him non-stop.  Wouldn't be surprised if he eventually shows up to the stadium in his Jovan Blecher jersey.  Might be easier than listening to Sheldon for nine months.

I'd imagine he'll speak to his teammates. From what I read, it seemed like he was liked, and this was out of character. If Mo Wilk disappeared for two days, would anyone think cutting him was a good idea?

He's getting cut...last thing you would want is to play him vs eagles, have him get hurt, and have to pay him....he's done. ..moving on...

Either we are just that desperate at CB (even though we only lost a rookie for the season), Idzik just refuses to admit mistakes/regrets, or both.

All are indictments.

The Jets should take a look at Charles James, the CB the Giants just cut. Supposedly he had a ton of INT's in camp and a lot of players were upset with him being cut. He is a beast on special teams too.

lol ,great message. Skip a pre season game  and we will punish you..... by making you miss a pre season game.

This is a joke, and makes us look like a joke. Bet this clown starts week one. PATHETIC.

THIS should bring the team together.

Wow, That's just too harsh, good thing preseason has only one game left otherwise I couldn't imagine how Patterson could cope..lol

I wouldn't send my laundry out if I was him. I wonder if Elvis Patterson trademarked "Toast"?

Extra punishment amounts to scrubbing skid marks off Rex's pants for rest of season.........

So basically keep him hostage for now, and if they find someone better after roster cuts they'll release him.

@levi

Maybe his zipper was stuck.  Now he'll come back and lead the league in interceptions.

@carlhungus That makes no sense.  They would just cut him before the game.

@carlhungus

He may only get cut if Idzik can come up with a replacement on a waiver claim after cuts or via a trade.  Otherwise, they almost have to keep him.

Just a thought...One thing we might keep an eye on is Idzik maybe looking to pick up a CB from Seattle.  A...they have a top notch secondary overall, so talented guys may still get dropped, and B. Idzik may be familiar with some of the guys Seattle cuts and be comfortable bringing them in.

Ex-Giant Terrell Thomas and rookie FA Thomas Wolfe were among Seattle's cuts to 75, but that still leaves them with 8 CB's on the roster.

Or maybe he had/ has a plan at CB, just like every position, and the team is fine with their CBs. The beauty is we get to see if it is a good plan or a bad plan when the games start for real.

When your desperate this is what happens. Obviously something transpired between Patterson & the team/coaches but bank on no explanation coming. Now people are begining to see the problems of Idzik not being able to hire his own HC. If we have a losing season & Idzik cans Rex, is the clock ticking on Idzi?? or does Idzik get a free pass & then his time clock starts ticking? Not fair to Rex, you know that Rex wanted Revis. Rex is a blitzer, loves his exotic blitzes, which he could have tailored around Revis's style of play...

@Marvel_ every guy on the jets is going to forget his playbook and not want to work with the guy playing next to him because dmitri patterson was not punished harshly enough or cut.

Floyd Toucanet
Floyd Toucanet

@Marvel_ who cares what he does in practice really?? never understand why fans get upset about this. if he can produce on the field I could care less if he misses practice or had a personal problem and missed a preseason game. you really think another player is going to be like "well dmitri patterson went AWOL and is still on the team so i don't feel like playing week 1, I think I will stay home."

Oh, you think you're clever, skipping school, huh?

WELL YOU'RE SUSPENDED! FOR A WEEK!

@roadyhorns  We may never know the truth about what happened but I just think it must be justifiable if this little suspension is how he is being disciplined.

@t__k @carlhungus true, but it covers them in case someone gets hurt against the Eagles and they have to keep him a week or two..

"It just kind of shows you that, for whatever reason, he doesn't care that much -- at least to come to the game and show guys that you're there for them," slot receiver Jeremy Kerley told Newsday

You should probably lecture Kerley about how he's supposed to feel.

Amazing!   I realize Idzik's between a rock and a self-made hard place re the CB situation, but a one-week vacation is the last thing Patterson needs.

Wonder if TaskMaster John found out why little Dimitri skipped school!

@Bernie Lyons No Bernie, the objective is to have the most upstanding citizens on a team. Who cares about wins or losses.

@johnnyl65 What I meant is he isn't free to possibly be picked up by another team and played on the last preseason game.

@levi @roadyhorns Or they aren't confident in his replacements and need him for Week 1.

Pete 57

You don't know that. In my limited discussions with you, you seem to think you know something no else knows. You can say whatever you want but the truth is we don't know what happened, and just as likely as what you think, it's very possible that the reason he has for being away justifies his punishment. I can't understand why you have a problem admitting you don't know everything and that you could be wrong about anything.

williamg1
williamg1

@hazard2012 @juunit @Marvel_ Precedent has been set: if you skip a game and/or practice, and don't inform the HC, GM, agent or positional coach, don't return the HC's phone calls, you will be suspended for 1 week.

Either that, or Idzik plans on enforcing team rules differently, based on how bad the team needs you. Apparently, we need an aging, hurt, and possibly backup CB.

juunit
juunit

@hazard2012 @juunit @Marvel_

I'd think the fine is the real punishment. I'd also think there are certain teammates who will not like him now.

williamg1
williamg1

@Pete 57 In my limited discussions with you, you have proven to be poorly-informed. What we know:

-He ate a pregame meal w/team

-He attended pregame meetings

-HE DID NOT SHOW UP FOR GAME

-He did NOT inform the HC

-He did NOT inform the GM

-He did NOT inform his positional coach

-He did NOT inform his agent

-He did NOT return calls

-He did NOT show up for practice that weekend

There isn't an excuse for any of this. Since we have things called "cell phones," complete with text message and email capabilities, this is called desertion. Please feel to inform yourself.

Pete 57
Pete 57

@Pete 57 If he has/had a plan, he wouldn't be reinstating a guy who deserted his team.

Unless of course having D'Mitri Patterson on the team is part of his plan, which it is, then this is exactly what he would do.

johnnyl65
johnnyl65

@williamg1 A precedent has been set unfortunately you or I or the press have any  idea what that is since Idzik ,Rex nor Patterson revealed what the purpose of the absence was.

@johnnyl65 @juunit

This is true. But Harrison Ford never finds that out until the end of the movie.
