Does Stevie Own Some Beachfront on Revis Island?

There aren’t many receivers who get the best of Revis, but with a Week One matchup looming between Darrelle Revis and Stevie Johnson, the question is getting raised.  James Walker asks on ESPN whether or not Stevie Johnson has Revis’ number.

Johnson doesn’t have elite speed, but he is a solid route-runner who can make tough catches. Several of his receptions against Revis last year were in tight coverage.

Some Bills fans in the AFC East blog have gone as far to say “Johnson owns Revis.” That’s a stretch. But Johnson has done relatively well against Revis compared to other receivers. Hearing this, expect Revis to be very motivated to shut down Johnson.

But if Johnson is able to continue his success on Revis Island, it could be a big key to Buffalo winning on the road Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Any Bills fans who believe that Stevie Johnson “owns” Revis are fooling themselves.  There’s no doubt that Johnson has had some of the most yardage and touchdown success in the league with Revis in coverage in recent years, but Pettine and Ryan made a point last year of playing Revis “off” of the not very speedy Johnson in an effort to get the Bills quarterbacks to throw his way.  The 2011 game that Walker references was one where the touchdown came on an indefensible ball based on where Revis lined up and even though Johnson had eight catches, only one was for a touchdown and he only averaged six yards per catch during the game.  During one of Johnson’s frequent drops, Pool botched a pass-off from Revis and David Harris couldn’t make the play on another in a clear trap play.

With LaRon Landry and Bell playing in the secondary this season, I’m excited to see what the Jets do.  I get the feeling that any real estate that Bills fans think Stevie Johnson own on Revis Island will be returned to their rightful owner.
