Opening Statement…
Alright, (it’s) a little different atmosphere than Hofstra. (It’s) not quite as far of a trip. It’s still great to see a lot of Jets fans out here and I think that kind of makes it special. You get to say a few words to some of the fans and that’s always a good thing. I thought (in) the practice today, clearly the second (team) defense dominated the practice. You know (Aaron) Maybin probably had about six sacks or something like that. It’s not to be unexpected, but I would still like to see that second offense pick it up a little bit. Overall, I like what we did. I thought (Mark) Sanchez looked good today, he made a couple of big throws, and that was good to see.
On Wayne Hunter and Calvin Pace missing practice…
Wayne came in, he was in meetings today, but we had a conversation and it was a personal thing and that’s the way it’ll remain, and it was excused. Calvin Pace had to get a wisdom tooth removed so that’s why he missed practice.
On if he was concerned about the reaction Hunter would receive from fans at today’s practice…
No, I wasn’t.
On if the personal reason had anything to do with his performance in the preseason game…
Again guys, it’s personal. I’m not going to get in to (the discussion) with Wayne and I. I’ll just say he was here for meetings and I was ok with him missing practice today.
On if Hunter will be back in practice tomorrow…
Yes.
On if Calvin Pace will be back in practice tomorrow…
Yes, I believe so.
On if he expects Hunter to play with the first-team on Sunday…
Yes.
On reports that the team is looking at bringing in another right tackle…
With all due respect, Chris (Mortensen) is not a part of any discussions I have had with Mike Tannenbaum. I don’t know where a source comes from. One thing we will always look at it is if there is a player out there that we feel will help our football team, then we will explore that possibility. With that being said, I am not saying that we are looking at a right tackle or we are looking at whatever, but honestly I am pretty happy with the roster we have. We are going to have some tough decisions on this roster with being able to keep all of our guys. We are going to end up letting some good players go and that is just the way it is. I like this team. Obviously, it hasn’t shown up on the scoreboard yet but it will soon.
On if he has spoken to Hunter…
If I have a (private) conversation with a player, that is the way it is going to end up being. If they choose to tell you about what is said in one particular meeting, then that is one thing. Any time I have a conversation with a player individually, I don’t share that.
On if the team is looking for another right tackle…
Again, if there is something out there, at this time people are looking to move a player or this player, but right now to say that we are in the market for a starting right tackle, I don’t believe that to be an accurate statement.
On the kicking competition…
Both of these guys are nailing it. Both of them will kick in this league this year, there is no doubt about it. Only one obviously is going to kick for us, but it is great competition.
On who will make the final decision regarding the kickers…
That is a New York Jet decision and that is the way it always is. In any decision we make, we will always be lined up. That is the way it always is. In theory, does Mike have the final say of the roster? Yes. But again, we are always lined up
On how Hunter is handling the public scrutiny…
Well, I just think sometimes it is more difficult here, you know. Obviously, I’ve had my share of it as well. It’s not easy. But again, we support each other and that’s the way it will always be.
On injury updates…
It’s good to see Santonio (Holmes) out here, running more individual routes. We got him in a red jersey so we don’t want him to get hit by any player or coach, for that matter. But he’s doing well. Hopefully, he can play this week. Jeremy Kerley looks pretty good out here running the routes. So I’m happy about him. As far as the injured guys, Chaz (Schilens) with his ankle is actually doing well, but I don’t anticipate him playing. Ricky Sapp, both of them have high ankle sprains, I don’t think either one of those guys will play.
On why Brandon Moore took a large amount of reps off…
No, we want to do that, we want to put Vlad (Vladamir Ducasse) in some at right guard, some at left guard, and rotate him in. He’s playing really well. But clearly, with Brandon Moore I mean, he knows, as Tony (Sparano) always says, he knows, he knows. Like, he knows the system as well as anybody. We know what Brandon can do for us, what he is. He’s our starting guard period. But, we want to get Vlad some more reps and that’s what you’ll continue to see.
On if Kenrick Ellis not getting suspended was a relief…
Well again, with Kenrick, I’m really excited about how Kenrick’s playing and I’m glad to hear that.
On Demario Davis’s progress…
(He’s) doing really well. I tell you the thing that jumps out at you is how he’s playing special teams as well. (He) really works at his craft. This one’s going to be a good one, there’s no doubt. (He’s) very coachable. In fact, we did a special teams drill he just did an okay job at it, but he wants to be great. (He) came in with Mike Westhoff and Ben Kotwica spent extra time with them, and then the next day, came out and looked terrific. So, he applies what you teach him in the classroom, he takes it to the field to try to get better, and this guy I think is going to be a tremendous player for us.
