Who Will Shake Loose?
Daniel Marcus , theJetsBlog.com
In light of the recent rash of injuries that has plagued the Jets roster and a lack of depth at certain key spots, I’ve been scouring rosters of teams from around the league to see if and where a quality player may shake loose. Below I’ve compiled a list of teams with an over-abundance of players at certain positions that also happen to be positions of need for the aforementioned New York Jets and who might be available come cut-down day.
Seattle Seahawks:
Too Many of What?: Wide Receivers
On the Roster: Sidney Rice, Terrell Owens, Braylon Edwards, Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Ben Obomanu
Breakdown:
Well if it isn’t our old friend Pete Carroll. The well-traveled Carroll has stock-piled an army of quality receivers that goes six deep, I would expect at least two to be looking for another job come cut-down day. It’s a lot tougher to tell as to who it will be, because it doesn’t appear as though there are any locks, especially with the oft-injured Sidney Rice, a talented veteran and former first-round pick making his own comeback from an injury in Braylon Edwards, and a 37-year old loudmouth who couldn’t even keep a job in the AFL named Terrell Owens on the roster.
Who’s Shaking Loose?:
This is just my best guess but Obomanu looks like the first one and the second one is really up in the air and I’ll shock the world here by saying that it could very well be Sidney Rice and if not, probably Golden Tate.
St. Louis Rams:
Too Many of What?: Offensive Tackles
On the Roster: Roger Saffold, Ryan McKee, Joe Long, Barry Richardson, Jason Smith, Jose Valdez
Breakdown:
Ok, so they may not be particularly stacked but this is a situation that bears watching, especially at that Right Tackle spot, where it looks like incumbent and former #2 overall pick, Jason Smith is being supplanted by free agent addition, Barry Richardson. Richardson is listed ahead of Smith on the depth chart and if he keeps it up, it could mean that the Rams will likely move Smith either by cutting him or trading him.
Who’s Shaking Loose?:
Things do not bode well for Smith at this point and that could be great news for all those who are not big fans of Wayne Hunter, which I can only assume is a convincing majority. If the Rams choose to cut ties with him, I would consider it an early Christmas present from Schotty.
