Well, we all knew this might be coming…
Two league sources have confirmed that Shaun Ellis is likely to face a one-game suspension following his arrest in November for marijuana possession. Ellis would miss the season opener against the Houston Texans, where the Jets will already be without Calvin Pace. Mike DeVito would replace Ellis, according to the current depth chart.
The Jets defense cannot really afford any injuries that week. Currently, Kris Jenkins is dealing with a strained calf and Bart Scott and Darrelle Revis are working through hamstring issues.
The only bright spots are that it gives some young players a chance to gain even more reps than the Pace suspension alone would have afforded them and that they can perhaps use Ellis’ roster spot to ‘stash’ a player on injured reserve without exposing him to waivers first.
It’s only one game, but can the Jets win without Ellis or are they destined to begin the season in an 0-1 hole?
