Folk Feeling Ready for Rock Solid Year

When asked about his kicker this week, Rex Ryan called his play “phenomenal” so far this season.  Two years ago when Nick Folk came to the Jets, there were questions about just how steady he could be after he had an inconsistent season in Dallas.  Folk’s first season with the team was solid with a serious run in the playoffs, not to mention a kick that was a key to their 17-16 win over the Colts in the playoffs.  This past summer, the Jets had Folk on the roster, but did put him through a legitimate competition with veteran Josh Brown.

Folk’s kicking was more up and down last year … most notably at the end of the season when he had a number of misses in a close period of time.  According to Folk, he’s returned to a training style this offseason that he thought yielded better results two years ago versus the lockout shortened 2011 offseason.

This year, Folk has returned to a workout regimen he used two years ago but went away from last year. He has placed a larger emphasis on weight lifting with his legs to keep their power longer and further into the year – like a pitcher trying to maintain his velocity.

“I think some of those kicks last year, I was put into some tough situations,” Folk said. “I talked about that with those guys. We had a 61-yarder, we had a 50-yarder in Buffalo. Take away those kicks and I had a pretty good year I thought. I just want to keep it rolling and have a good finish to this year.”

It seems to be working so far for Folk, but he started the year well last year then tailed off in the end.  Let’s hope that as he indicates that his “old is ever new again” workout routine this year will yield more steady results.
