Free Agency Watch: All Quiet on the Free Agent Front?

Brian Bassett , TheJetsBlog.com

With the soft-start of free agency today, the news is picking up! Here’s some of the latest information about the Jets, and a couple notes from around the league.

Stay or Go? – According to a source, the Jets are working to make signing Mike DeVito a priority per Manish Mehta of the Daily News.  It’s a smart move when the Jets might have some questions about the middle of their defensive line this year.  DeVito isn’t a proper nose, but he can rotate inside and outside in the Jets system and that makes him valuable.  Knowing DeVito’s temperament, he probably will try and give the Jets promises to get a deal done soon the benefit of the doubt, but you can’t spend promises and we gather that Mike Pettine might push Marrone and the Bills to make a play for his former lineman.

Run Revis Run — Revis began running on a treadmill for the first time since his injury this past Thursday.  It’s a small milestone for any team interested in trading for Revis, but a milestone nevertheless.  It’s unfortunate that this seems to be the situation that the Jets and Revis are in … but Revis and Woody Johnson seem entrenched with their stances.

Brandon Moore

Moore Interest Elsewhere — According to the man himself, the Jets have barely contacted Brandon Moore about a potential return.  It’s assumed that Moore’s costs would be too high for the Jets to hang onto him this offseason based on their lack of cap space.  According to Michael Wright of ESPN Chicago, the Bears are a team that has interest in Moore.  Don’t expect him to be back in New York in 2013.

No no … We INSIST — According to Rich Cimini on ESPN NY, the Jets are “insisting” that Santonio Holmes that Holmes take a reduction in salary.  Beyond his contract offset clause (he can’t double dip if he gets cut) Holmes wouldn’t be particularly motivated to help his team since he probably realizes the money will dry up quickly after 2013.  Santonio wants to be perceived as a contributor and leader … here’s his chance to prove it and Idzik’s first real Mexican contractual standoff.

News Beyond the Jets

Mike Wallace ❤s AFC East — Up until now, the Dolphins were the main team in the AFC East that were talked about in relation to Wallace, now the Patriots might have some interest, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald tweets.  It’s true the the Patriots offense needs an upgrade, but watching more than one AFCE team want to jump into the Wallace sweepstakes while Revis is seemingly being pushed out of New York doesn’t seem to be happening just by chance …

Broncos Are Looking — While they didn’t nab him, the Broncos hosted Dunta Robinson for a visit on Friday, but Robinson ended up signing with Kansas City.  If anything, it indicates that the Broncos are looking for veteran corners … now it’s a major leap to then assume that they would be interested in Revis, but you never know.  Factor in that the Broncos are looking to create cap room by restructuring Dumervil and there might be some smoke.

It’s Elementary Watson, You Won’t Be Back — The Cleveland Browns hired a former Tight End to be their head coach, so it’s understandable that a lot of the higher profile veteran TEs are being mentioned in relation to the Browns.  According to the CPD, Chudzinski is looking to move away from veteran TE Ben Watson, but it remains to be seen who will fill his slot.  Could Dustin Keller?  Chud has coached the likes of Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey and even Kellen Winslow II.  While Keller is more H-Back than inline tight end, could the Browns be a team to make a play?
