Weatherford Explains Dislike of Mike Westhoff
Steve Weatherford talked about his prickly relationship with former Jets special team coordinator Mike Westhoff on WFAN with Boomer & Carton, and the former punter for the Jets had this to say.
“I didn’t get along with Mike. Mike was a really difficult person to play for. He’s a guy that kind of harped on the negative a little bit, and life’s short, man. I’m trying to have fun. And nobody works harder than me, so you can’t say anything like that. It was just difficult. . . . I don’t know exactly why we didn’t get along, but it was a mutual parting of the ways.
“I liked being a New York Jet, and everybody treated me well there, but I felt like there was just maybe a little lack of respect. I’m 30 years old, I’m a father of three and he just didn’t treat me that way. It was frustrating because I wanted to be great for him, but he made it a very difficult workspace.”

Weatherford’s thougths have some basis, Westhoff is well known for his saltiness and so it’s a fair argument to make. But when a punter decides to run it on 4th and 18 in his own territory and didn’t even know the distance, or when that punter turn into a postseason shankapotomus in two crucial games averaging just 36 YPP, can one blame a special team coach for “harping” on such matters?
