Only a week ago Bart Scott was fielding interest from a couple of teams and told reporters he would weigh his options. After doing just that, Scott opted for retirement and accepted a deal to joined CBS’s That Other Pregame Show which is set to debut on September 8. Scott will be joined by former Oakland Raiders CEO Amy Trask.
Released by the New York Jets in February, Scott told The New York Post that he had been considering playing in the NFL this season until he got the offer from CBS.
“This was a tremendous opportunity that I didn’t want to pass up,” Scott told the newspaper. “It’s something I could be doing for the next 20 years.”
Scott, 33, had 732 tackles, 25 sacks, six forced fumbles and four interceptions in 172 career games for the Baltimore Ravens and Jets.
It’s unfortunate Scott’s playing career ended on a sour note. He was a productive player for much of his career but, his play visibly and statistically declined the past two seasons and his behavior off the field was constantly under criticism.
Even so, his contributions to the Jets cannot be understated. He was a key part in marshaling in Rex Ryan’s defense and helping players throughout the years learn the complexities that came with it. The defense has been ranked in the top ten league-wide four years running.
While he may not be able to duplicate his famous “Can’t Wait!” interview, his bombastic personality is made for TV and as a former player with a knowledge of the Xs and Os it will be interesting to see what he can bring to the show. We hope Scott enjoys retirement and wish him the best with CBS.
