Buzz: Did Jets release Santonio Holmes or not?

While this is a transaction that is seen as practically inevitable, there are conflicting reports today on whether Santonio Holmes has been released.

Following an earlier report from Turn on the Jets that he had been released, the New York Post’s Brian Costello checked into it:

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

We’ll wait for official confirmation, but this may simply be a case where a decision has already been made but the paperwork has yet to be filed rather than an erroneous report.

Even if (or when) Holmes is (or was) released, the small possibility exists that the team is open to bringing him back at a much lower salary, but most of the media seems to be operating on the assumption that this won’t happen. The team has remained typically tight-lipped on the subject.

Business has obviously picked up over the last couple of days though, so this is probably just another transaction you can expect to hear confirmation of in the days to come.

Jimmy Graham just tweeted that he's "shocked and disappointed" that Darren Sproles was released.

Tad ironic, no?  Does he even realize that if they're going to give him the contract he's demanding, Sproles will be the first of many to get released?

I'm probably the only person on the blog upset that Matt Cassell is going back to the Vikings...

Supposedly Darren Sproles will either be traded or released.. He fits the mold of a pass catching rb that MM covets. I wonder what it would take to aquire him in a trade.

After the 2010 season I wanted the Jets to go after Vincent Jackson. Ideally trade Holmes to San Diego. Most on TJB told me that was unnecessary and preferred to keep Holmes. Never liked Holmes.

Honest question. I apologize for being nieve. If the jets say restructured Holmes deal what's the difference between that and cutting and resigning? Same with CRo? Sanchez?

Why did the Steelers take out the trash.

@Brian_Bassett should Jets try to trade for Darren Sproles? They traded for Chris Ivory last year, would be a good 1-2 punch, no?

The sooner the better..

@Bent  That's gotta be him playing the fans a bit, no?

@Marvel  Unless there's any Vikings fans that have stopped by.

Sproles won't be the same guy playing in cold NJ weather outdoors catching passes from Geno that he was indoors in a dome catching passes from Drew Brees.

He's a good player....but I don't see him as a tough cold weather running back.

@jake100  Equating a guy who mentored young receivers and was by his own coach's admission a "great teammate" to cancer is really reasonable. Thanks, Joey.

@Pat d  It would've been hard to trade Holmes when he was an UFA.

@j3tsfan29  It's just easier sometimes.  Depends on the contract and the dead money implications.

If they cut Cromartie for example, there's a big dead money hit, whereas if they extended his existing deal that would continue to be spread over his remaining contract.

The Jets have plenty of cap space so the timing of payments is likely less crucial this year.

@Pat d  It was a Sistah Souljah moment. Faced with Tones weed habit and Big Ben's rapes, they decided to make an example of Tone.

@JimmyShnoogen

 Sproles is getting cut
, if the price is rite ofcourse u add him. but that wouldn't affect my draft plans as far as ow goes.

When it comes to player personnel decisions the players themselves are not to bright. A recent survey of current players had Peyton Manning as the #1 player to build a franchise around. Really, you are going to build a franchise around a player that has 1 or 2 years left in the league.

That's a good point but if Sproles can't put put up receiving numbers with the jets then what rb possibly could

@Brendan @jake100 I dont think he looked like a very good teammate in that huddle during that last drive against the Dolphins or sulking on the bench after he was pulled for being a dic_! Yeah, he had some good moments on hard-knox mentoring the young guys but I'm not sure I'd classify him as a good teammate!

What's up with the love affair with Holmes. He gave up on team during key game. And he is the only player that just handed the ball to the other team when injured.

I agree with you Brendan. Holmes was the team's best receiver in 2010 by far and there is no way the Jets make it to the AFC championship that season without his game winning scores. He was a great receiver when healthy and as you said a great mentor to the younger receivers.

It is naive to think Holmes who was one of the few talented players on a very poor offense is to blame for the Jets offensive problems and embarrassing play at the end of 2011-2013.

The front office under Tannenbaum did not draft enough good talent on offense and relied way too heavily on free agents leaving the cupboard bare....

The result was an inept offense that lacked talent not to mention the fact that the team never had a competent OC prior to Morninweg. It's no wonder Holmes was frustrated at times....

The fact that Holmes is a jerk made the decision alot easier

I really don't care who they get.

@Pat d  Yeah, but I think a guy in the middle of a contract dispute with a team will be aware that people being cut might have something to do with his contract dispute.

I guess I could be giving Jimmy too much credit.

@Pat d  It is amazing that you think "he...just handed the ball to the other team when injured" is a thing.

The NFL is full of "jerks." Not everybody in the locker room is going to get along and this has always been true. Many Super Bowl teams had guys who hated each other or quite simply had different personalities.

Why is Holmes a jerk? Because the NY media says he's a jerk. The media isn't exactly filled with classy guys with good intentions....

People draw all these conclusions about Holmes based on his relationship with a corrupt media ....but the fact is that many of the players in the Jets locker room enjoyed him as a teammate. The fact that a few didn't isn't a big deal... Anybody who has ever played sports knows the dynamic of a locker room

@Bent @williamg1@Brendan@Pat d In the end it was all about the money. It will also be about the money if the Jets get rid of Holmes. Do not think you can judge Holme's play based on last year. He was coming off a bad injury and having a rookie QB did not help.

Bent
Bent moderator

@williamg1 @Brendan @Pat d

Plus they knew he had a suspension coming and saw that he would walk at the end of the year for nothing because they didn't have the available cap room to spend $10m per year on another receiver.

They also had confidence that Antonio Brown would pick up the slack and make him expendable.

The fact he was a one year rental presumably affected his value.

Weed is the least that is wrong with Holmes. In fact I find nothing wrong with the weed.

@Brendan @Pat d  Tone took the fall for Big Ben. They couldn't cut their franchise QB, so they got rid of him.

@Pat d  What trash? He got caught with blunts. Big Ben raped someone and they kept him. They clearly weren't taking out the trash by making him their franchise QB.
