Buzz: Jets interested in RFA WR Hawkins?

Per TheJetsBlog’s Jake Steinberg, the Jets may have interest in another free agent receiver:

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

Hawkins is a 27-year old converted cornerback and stands just 5-7 and 175. However, he ran a 4.34 at Toledo’s pro day in 2008 and is excellent in the open field. The Jets were rumored to have serious interest in Tavon Austin in last year’s draft and Hawkins is the same kind of player.

Last year he caught just 15 passes for 217 yards (including three catches in the Bengals’ postseason game), but that’s because he missed the first half of the season with an ankle injury. When he returned, he played just 124 snaps with the Bengals already deep and playing well at wideout so he was actually pretty productive when called upon. In the previous season, he had a breakout year with over 50 catches and four touchdowns.

Hawkins is also an excellent contributor on special teams, where he excels as a gunner. Adding him to the roster would prevent teams from triple-teaming Ellis Lankster, which was actually happening in a few late season games. Hawkins also has the skill-set to return kicks and although he has never done so in an NFL game, he has practiced with the return units while in Cincinnati and has kick and punt return experience both in college and in his two years in Canada.

The Cincinnati Enquirer did state recently that the team “isn’t expected to let him get away”. However, the fact they only placed an original round tender on him surprised some people. For a Bengals team that already has AJ Green, Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones all on rookie deals, they will have to weigh up whether matching an offer sheet for Hawkins is wise. They do currently have almost $30m in cap room and would have five days to match if the Jets did sign Hawkins to an offer sheet.

From what we hear, this won’t be the only receiver the Jets intend to target this offseason. Manish Mehta of the Daily News seems adamant that they will target Emmanuel Sanders, although I’m not sure that a top three of Sanders, Kerley and Hawkins makes sense because they need some size.

Can someone tell me why FS Stevie Brown wouldn't be a great bargain signing (If he proves health, of course)?

Saints shopping RB Pierre Thomas and WR Lance Moore to other teams, per sources, and even could be open to trading RB Darren Sproles also.

Now I wouldn't mind getting Sproles.Perfect...

NY beat currently praising Minnesota for arranging film session with local media.

Wut?

Not going to call it a "filibuster" or a "waste of time" and suggest he's just avoiding the tough questions?  These guys are so freaking hypocritical and ungrateful it's unbelievable.  Still angry over the response to that.

Draft a receiver first, sign this guy and tate. Improve the OL we make playoffs its that simple.

A WR core of say Tate Nelson Hawkins Kerley LEE/ODB/Matthews (pick your dream 18 pick)  is an insane improvement over what we had last year.

Today's daily hypothetical.

Still on the board at 18 are:

Barr/Beckham/Gilbert/Lee/Ebron/Clinton-Dix/Dennard

Who ya got?

@jake100

I've yet to hear any reasons for concern.

In terms of "news" on Howard, there's an article on the Jets official site with comments from Ian Rapaport about how the Jets have made it a priority not to let him hit the open market and he congratulated Lankster on re-signing which is hopefully a good sign.

@Bent  What a group of scumbags. They should just lock the doors to the media room and drop in a horde of locusts.

@JCuratola3  I know people have written him off, but don't leave Hill off that list just yet.

@J. Smooth  Ebron for sure.  Hopefully land Jordan Matthews (I'm praying) or Davante Adams in the 2d.

Lee or Ebron

@J. Smooth

Dennard/Ebron/Beckham/Lee/Barr/Gilbert/Clinton-Dix, in that order.

Beckham/Lee could be swapped, they're interchangeable in my mind.

Edit: Dennard only if they don't bring in a top-flight guy like Verner/Shields.

Can someone tell me why FS Stevie Brown wouldn't be a great bargain signing (If he proves health, of course)?  I have not heard him mentioned once this offseason, anywhere or by anyone.  I am curious if anybody knows why?  Thanks

@a57se @Bent  No, but it shouldn't be that way.

We strive to give you guys access to great coverage and an opportunity to improve the coverage you get was taken from us due to selfish, hypocritical and ungrateful people.

@Brendan @Bent  To add further context, Woody Johnson actually contacted us to say he was pleased we enjoyed it.  Then at the next presser, they didn't include the film footage in what they aired on the site (instead having Rex point meaninglessly off screen).  Shortly afterwards they got rid of it.

I got more insight from that one time we actually got to see his breakdowns than anything anyone in the media said all year.

Screw the media, arrange a film session for season ticket holders and PSL owners.  Lock out the media.

@Brendan @BentLet's face it being critical of the Jets in this market is gold for NY beat reporters.  NYC has folks from all over with allegiances to other teams, Giants fans and Jets fans, most of whom just love to criticize every move the team makes.  The press is just playing for the majority....

JCuratola3
JCuratola3

@Brendan woops.. didnt mean too. No i have def not written him off. The guy did make improvements last year. Maybe with a little push this off season he will learn how to play more aggressively and i think that is what will do it for him.

@harold  Ebron (and don't want to put myself through the tough task of ranking the rest of those players behind him).

He creates the biggest matchup problem, and we could get some very good WR prospects in the 2nd and 3rd round. Hard to say the same with as much certainty at the TE position.

@nesboogie My most-wanted guy up until he might've jumped into the top 10 was Evans, but I would like them to draft a WR, OLB, ILB and take the best available lineman in one of the middle rounds. I honestly need to see how FA shakes out before knowing what I'd want in the draft.

A Liam Neeson movie but that's not important right now.

Actually, I'm talking about when Rex was talking the media through some film footage in his pressers and it was great but the media did nothing but complain it was a waste of time and an excuse to avoid (pointless mind you) questions about Sanchez...so they stopped doing it.

@Bent @a57se

It's a tossup between whose taught me more about how the English perceive their neighbors... Bent or Jeremy Clarkson.

Bent

@a57se  It's commonly said that the origin is untrustworthy welshman, but I think that's a myth.  Nobody seems to know for certain where it came from.  Maybe Raquel Welch was notorious for it.

And yes it can be either.

As a general rule, we don't associate Welsh people with being un-Lannister-esque but we do associate Scottish people with being mean or thrifty.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bent Oh, right, well then I'd be a welsher. I'm also not making this up when I say not even 30 seconds after typing "(used to)" I knocked over my thing of water all over my keyboard.

Something I've always wondered and perhaps you know the answer: does "welshing" on a bet have any connection to Welsh people? Did it start out as a derogatory phrase used by English people?

@Brendan @BentIn most other towns, where the pro team is idolized, a media friendly guy like Rex would have a regular show on local TV or cable.  In NY, he would be mercilessly criticized for "bypassing" the media.

@Brendan  I mean, Brendan actually spending money!  That would be worth seeing.

@Bent I would pay money to watch Rex break down film. I'm not even close to joking.

Brendan

@williamg1 He hasn't given reason to think otherwise, but Sanchez ignoring you for an entire season followed by an injury-plagued season isn't really going to get you off on the right foot.

Hopefully he comes in healthy and focused.

JCuratola3
JCuratola3

@Brendan Yupp .. if he can put it all together.. still though this team will never meet its potential unless qb play is at least average. Hopefully Geno AND Hill take the leap.

Brendan

@JCuratola3 Ha, I figured it was just an oversight, I was only joking.

But in regards to Hill, this is it for him. Sh-- or get off the pot time.

jma020

@J. Smooth @jma020  Unfortunately MAtthews is probably going to be gone by the time we pick 2nd.  I think he has almost no bust potential, and apparently has very good character and work ethic.  Not to mention a little Jerry Rice blood.

juunit

@a57se @jdb4

He caught around 72% in 2012. It's not like he has bad hands. He will still make the occasional dumb drop, but that's pretty much any WR, especially when they're targeted as often as he is.

You can watch his press conference from the combine. When asked about his down year, he said injuries played a role, but he owned it as well and said he was trying to run before he caught the ball, that he has to do better.

Assuming his knee is structurally sound, he's a no-brainer at 18. Although as an FYI, the knee wasn't his only injury this season. It's just the one that is potentially worrying about his future ability.

harold
harold

@Brendan

He is 29 so I think three years, maybe four at the most.  So 4 years 20-22 million should get it done.  At most 6 million APY.  But I think that would be in abidding war.  With so many CB's available I don't see that being the case with the mid-level guys.

@juunit @Bent@SackDance99@Brendan@harold

I concur.  This idea that we pass on Lee because we can get quality in the next few rounds is silly.  Take Lee and get the other quality as well in the next few rounds.

I'd hope the Jets are aiming to get 3 wide receivers in this draft... regardless of what they do in free agency.

juunit
juunit

@Bent @juunit@SackDance99@Brendan@harold

Any more? I'd say it's been that way for a while. Before this season, he was the consensus #1 WR in the entire country. Then he got hurt/had a bad QB and now he's the forgotten man. If it means he's forgotten all the way to 18, then please everyone, erase him from your mind.

juunit
juunit

@SackDance99 @Brendan@harold

Tsk, tsk, Sack. I legitimately believe Lee might be the best WR in this draft. Getting that level of player at 18 is the furthest thing from idiotic.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  If that's the deal I give him a more serious look. I though he'd be a little bit higher than that APY and looking for more years.

harold
harold

@Brendan

I think he will be in the 3 years/15 million range.  I think that is a steal for a player of his caliber.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  Yeah, I thought we discussed this? I might have replied to an old post that you didn't see.

I like Brown as a player, he's an above-average CB, but I worry about giving him a big contract because of the front seven he played with in SF.

harold
harold

I agree with you both.  Those guys are long-term Starters IMO.

I think Lee is a better Kendall Wright.  I think Ebron could develop into a Vernon Davis type guy.  I think he will run at his Pro Day and blow up.

Brendan
Brendan

@SackDance99 Yeah, I wouldn't be thrilled if that's how it went down. I like Lee a lot and think he has potential to be a very good starter at the next level, but I think there are a lot of guys in this draft like that. Agree with your post completely.

harold
harold

@Brendan

Did you ever look at Tarell Brown's stats?

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Brendan @haroldMcShay has Lee, Ebron and Dennard still on the board at 18 and has the Jets taking Lee.  That would be monumentally idiotic.  Jets can still get a quality WR in the 2nd round, but there would be nothing like Ebron or Dennard in the 2nd round.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  Right, if they sign Verner or Shields or Munnerlyn or whoever...we're probably not looking at Dennard there. But if they haven't shored that up yet, or brought back Cromartie, they might look for a top-level CB prospect.

If they sign a new CB to start, then I vote Ebron as well.

harold
harold

@Brendan

I like Dennard a lot as well, just think we will get our CB in FA, but if not that choice becomes a little harder.

Brendan
Brendan

@J. Smooth Yep. I think people get too wrapped up in the straight-line speed and athleticism. Dennard is an excellent football player and Rex would love him, imo. Can play man, transitions well and has a good football IQ.
