Buzz: Jets to target QB McCown in free agency?

Per a report in the New York Daily News, the Jets could be in the market for some “Geno Insurance” when March 11th rolls around:

The Daily News has learned that the Jets are eying Bears quarterback Josh McCown in free agency to provide a viable alternative in case Smith regresses. McCown, coming off an impressive season that included five starts in relief of an injured Jay Cutler, is expected to draw a fair amount of interest when free agency begins on March 11. The Jets, who are expected to release Mark Sanchez next month, believe McCown would be a quality backup.

The report also reveals that a move for Michael Vick is unlikely and that Matt Schaub is not an option because he isn’t interested in a backup role. There’s also a suggestion that the release of Mark Sanchez is inevitable despite the fact multiple sources have reported that the Jets recently met with his representatives. That’s apparently on the basis that John Idzik would have “little to gain” if Sanchez remained with the Jets and outperformed Smith.

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

The 6’4″ McCown, who will be 35 by the start of training camp, is a true journeyman in the purest sense of the word. Since being drafted in the third round of the 2002 draft, McCown has been on seven different NFL rosters, starting a total of 38 games. Last season he posted a quarterback rating of 109.0 while throwing 13 touchdown passes and just one interception. However, that was the first time his quarterback rating at the end of the season was above 75.

The Bears were 3-2 in the five games McCown started and 0-3 in the other games where he saw action. However, he put up good numbers in a Bears’ system which has some similarities to that of the Jets. At this stage of his career, McCown is a game manager type, no longer possessing the athleticism that was part of the reason he was drafted so high. However, that’s arguably an ideal skill-set for a potential backup.

McCown played for the veteran’s minimum last year, with a small signing bonus and a partial guarantee.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

I like the idea of the Jets adding a player like McCown, it provides a borderline token competition with Geno Smith, but also allows for some teeth at the backup quarterback position.

In truth though, the teeth that McCown could provide off the bench are duller than we might expect.  To Bent’s point about McCown’s time in Chicago, he had a high rating compared to his prior years in large part due to two things.  First, McCown benefited from the dynamism of a Marc Trestman offense.  Second, because McCown was throwing the ball to Alshon Jeffrey, Brandon Marshall, Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte.

 In ALL the Speed and Agility tests as well as verticals, Beckham Jr.  leads the way while Benjamin is completely outclassed.

Mike Evans numbers are very impressive when you take into account his size while Lee is the closest to Beckham at a comparable size. Watkins falls in the middle.

Jadeveon 21 reps, Vernon Gholsotn 37 reps lmao

Waste of resources. Trestman is an offensive genius and the bears had receivers who were capable of out leaping the defenders. I would prefer Shaun Hill at a much more reasonable contract

What if Bortles is there at 18 do we grab him ?.

I think it's still safe to say that we like Evans, Ebron, Lee, or Beckham, at 18.... (I'm counting Ebron as a viable WR here)

Can't wait!!  (smiles)

It is way overdue that the Jets have a quality backup QB on the roster.  Have never understood having shaky starting QBs (Sanchez & Smith) without viable backups.

So Clowney could only manage 21 reps.....do we take him when he falls to us at 18?

Brendan, nice job by West, he is impressive looking.

Marquise lee with a 4.52 official may become this years Kendall Wright. He is growing on me as pick. I see him in the same vein. He has been productive despite some limitations. So Lee can be our Wright not bad.

If my man Andrews doesnt run better he may be 7th rounder. Good for us not so good for him.

@Nick Congello  I don't think it's a given that Hill's contract will be less than McCown's.

@jpi22le22  No way bro, no QB can succeed with what we had last year as weapons and pass protection.

We draft WR and TE and then go secondary, and OLB..... then maybe a G, RB or QB.

I'm good with Geno and two viable backups for 2014.

Don Banks

@DonBanksAccording to 2 OC's I spoke with, UCF QB Blake Bortles threw okay, but may have confirmed Sunday that he's not a day one rookie starter.

I know we need receivers (playmakers) but do we let a talent like that pass

21 reps is not going to make Clowney drop

kniff

@a57se  The Jets weight program could toughen him up significantly. I would grab him at 18 if Evans (or insert your favorite WR here) wasn't on the board...

@a57se

Tell you what. I'll be OK with drafting him if he falls to our first compensatory pick, whenever that is.

@harold

I'd take Beckham and his 4.43 instead.

@harold  I've basically seen every game he's played, and he's a football player. He's everything that Stephan Hill isn't.

4.76? Seriously?

@kniff @jpi22le22  Y I agree...we sign a vet as insurance, get Geno some weapons, and then if it doesn't pan out next year will be a good QB draft.

jpi22le22
jpi22le22

With this draft being loaded with talented wr's we could get a good wr and te along with Bortles and fa. Why not ??

jpi22le22
jpi22le22

Cam also threw horrible at the combine . Could be because of his unfamiliarity with the wr's . That's why a lot of these Qb's don't throw because of looking bad

jpi22le22
jpi22le22

But that doesn't mean that he wouldn't become one eventually maybe even a great one . He must have something for numerous analyst saying he could possibly go # 1 in this years draft . I would think the Jets brass would have a hard time trying to sort this one out if that was to happen

@nesboogie @a57se

Not that I'm arguing for the importance of the bench. But, JPP also has been in the league 4 years and only lived up to his name in 1 of those seasons.

@nesboogie @a57se

an he wasn't saying he should be taken no. 1 overall, nor did he have work ethic questions like Clowney....

@a57se  Which brings up a dilemma ... Clowney and Ebron available at 18....what to do??

Hmmmmm.

I like Evans and Lee over Beckham. I also have seen every one of Lee's games. This is football not track.

Marcus allen ran a 4.78. The difference he won Heisman. Ran 4.69 2nd time. Still never touted him as a fast guy just a football player. That why I said he needs a year to develop NFL level functional speed and conditioning. Although I think he can be a contributor from day one

juunit

@Bent @juunit@jpi22le22

Not if we trade for a 2015 first with all our extra draft picks this year! Then, we can finally go with the vaunted 2 QB formation run out of the jumbo shrimp set.

juunit
juunit

@jpi22le22

Because Bortles has lots of work to do to become a good NFL QB. And next year there might be as many as 3 QBs in the draft who would all be worthy of a #1 overall pick.

@jpi22le22  Bring on McCown to compete with Geno, Get two more FA studs for Defense, and then go hog wild picking Offensive starters and depth...

Bring that gang green to camp and get ready to be astonished!!

@jpi22le22  Sure, was just sharing that information without comment because it was of relevance.

@Brendan @Bent  My recollection is that we tried a few examples of simply x divided by y and it didn't really work (not that I can remember what the flaw was) so we were working on introducing some other variables to see if we could identify a pattern.  Hopefully Marcus still has the baton because I don't...

Brendan
Brendan

@Bent Will do. I'd actually be really interested in figuring something like that out.

Bent

@Brendan @Bent  I recall having an involved discussion about coming up with a formula for reps over arm length with Marcus, but I can't really remember what we concluded.  Ask him about it next time he's around.

Brendan

@Bent Ha.

I also forgot he didn't even bench at the combine, but just (insert long-armed OL/DL) and the point is the same.

rstysanchz

@a57se @juunit  if he does drop to us and we pick him ill guarentee it will be labeled as a bad pick from the media

juunit
juunit

@a57se @juunit

The bench might be the most useless of all the things they do at the combine. But it just adds to the idea that he's a lazy POS when his honored athletic freakness can do one whole more rep than 173 pound Dri Archer.
