Buzz: Jimmy Graham received non-exclusive tag

News broke today of an interesting development in the Jimmy Graham saga. For those not keeping score at home, the Saints placed their franchise tag on their pro bowl tight end earlier this week, albeit with the looming threat of Graham filing a grievance to say that he should be treated as a wide receiver and therefore receive a higher sum. The Saints don’t have a very good cap situation, so they will have been relieved to hear the recent news of recent cap hikes, which might mean they’re well positioned to extend him long term. The latest development is an interesting one though…

This would allow a team to negotiate with Graham and, although the Saints could match the offer, if they chose not to they would lose him and receive draft pick compensation instead. It opens up the possibility that a team with more cap space than the Saints could offer him a contract with front-loaded cap hits that could be difficult for them to match.

So what do you reckon, Jets fans? Would it be worth a shot? Answer the poll below and elaborate in the comments.

th inking about this for the past five six hoursI've come to the conclusion that you have to make this deal if possible. How often do you get a chance to pick up a player of his caliber. When you think about it you're really only giving up one draft pick because it looks like the Jets will be picking at tight end at number 18 this season. So for whoever we would get next year I believe this guy, Graham is worth a Ebron and whoever we pick up next year. If the salary cap didn't rise to such a ridiculous point that the Jets haveapproximately 60 million in room I would probably feel the other way.

No way Idzik gives up 2 first round draft picks.

The Jets won't get a better receiver than Graham with this year pick and since next year the Jets will make it to the playoffs, YES YOU MAKE THAT TRADE.

Apparently the Pats have put Amendola on the trading block!

I really want Calvin Pryor in the first. I know we need receivers but this draft is deep at receiver.

Can we trade 18 for 32 and 64 via the Seahawks, and then do this?

What about Sam shields doh. Does no one else agree we should go after this guy?

So is this Vick talk for real or is it media made?

You can either trade way back with say Seattle for the 32nd pick and package the 2nd and 3rd and move up to the 49ers spot (30th?). Just because it's 2 first round picks doesn't mean they have to be high ones. Also we could work out a trade with NO, say a 1st and a 3rd.

There is no debate.  Jimmy Graham is neutralized by press coverage.  Screw him.

On another note I say we let cro go and go after Sam sheilds. He's younger 26 and more productive than cro at this point in his career. He also ran 4.23 at combine so he can stay with any receiver.

Go watch the Seahawks - Saints playoff game and tell me he is worth two #1's and top WR pay...

Hopefully the second first round pick would be the 32nd

@Marcus Armstrong  It's theoretically possible.  However, you do that and then the Saints match and suddenly you have those picks and would have to use them in the draft, losing the 18th in the process.  I mean, maybe you then would trade up, but in essence this is a plan that in practice involves several steps and compliance from the player and another team which can get derailed.

@lagoo

You are pretty late to the party....

lagoo

I think the fact is we're getting another qb to compete with geno. I think we would go after mccown first seeing as he's used to being a back up. Less drama.

@Marvel

I think it is Vicks agent trying to generate as much buzz for his client as he can....

You trade this years 18 and hope you go far in the playoffs and only give up 32 next year.

Woah that's awfully bold. So if Kyle Wilson just presses him it's gg?

@Tooned In

We once held Keyshawn Johnson to 1 catch for 1 yard... Steve Smith to 1 catch for 5 yards. You can scheme out a player but if the other team knows that then they have an advantage.

@Tooned In

Or watch how Talib abused him in the Pats game

lagoo

Dude not many people looked good against the hawks this year. They also sent two guys at him almost every time.

lagoo

Was there already a debate over him?

@Pat d  Nothing says you can't trade back this year and get more picks while giving up the pick in compensation... I think that's what Atlanta did for Abraham and then we got Mangold at ~28th spot.

@Pat d

Yeah because that is such a likely occurence!

@lagoo

Well if he's on the Jets he won't have the luxury of facing Wilson, will he?

Tooned In

@reprocity @Tooned In  Keyshawn was considered elite? Steve Smith ever have any other receivers than Steve Smith? Was it a playoff game when these things happened?

Tooned In

@lagoo  If he is elite then the least he could have done was show up. He was gutless in that game.

Too late now.  I MUST HAVE HIM!

lagoo

Looks like he would fit in better than I thought anyway it won't happen and I can't afford to keep making this fictional signings

lagoo
lagoo

It won't happen but that depth at d line would be great he could spell any of the front 3.

lagoo

Red Bryant is fat. I'm pretty sure he's much heavier than 323 listed. I would say he's pushing 340. But all those stats were in Seattle different d. Anyway I'm pretty sure you stick red between mo and Sheldon he'd do swell.

Bent
Bent moderator

@harold  Right on ... but I'd expect him to want to start somewhere rather than get a depth role with a team like the Jets.  He's definitely good enough to start on most teams.

harold
harold

He could be a NT in passing situations.  But he not suited to be a everydown NT.

Lastly we have Mo and Sheldon who we can play at NT on pass downs who are much better options.  He is a DE and would be a good depth player if Douzable leaves.

Bent
Bent moderator

@lagoo  He's a defensive end.  In 561 snaps this year he played just 29 as a 4-3 DT and literally NONE as a nose tackle.  He was a defensive end or standing up on the rest.

Muhammad Wilkerson isn't a nose tackle, but he's 315 pounds and he actually DID play at nose quite often - 121 snaps (exclusively in nickel/dime packages though).

lagoo
lagoo

I think being over 320lbs kind of makes you a nt.

Bent

@lagoo  Red is not really a nose tackle.

lagoo

I guess the jets don't feel the same about tj.

lagoo

Yea I agree but red Bryant and snacks would be a way better duo. For a fair price I would do it and it doesn't hurt he was a captain.

Already have in TJ Barnes....this guy is 6'7" and 364 lbs.......

@a57se

@lagoo

Kenrick Ellis and Snacks is the best NT duo in the league.

lagoo

Oh well hope we go after him. Bad move by the packers. I would also love to get red Bryant to back up snacks.

@lagoo

Frankly, I just believe the money would be better spent  on a defensive player like Worilds or Orakpo and build the offense through the draft and add a low cost receiver in free agency

lagoo
lagoo

I can name any other mediocre cb. I think press with a safety over the top is a better approach ie seattle

lagoo
lagoo

I'd agree. I hope it doesn't happen but I can't say I wouldn't be excited if it did.

a57se
a57se

@lagoo

It just makes him NOT worth 2 first rounders.

lagoo
lagoo

When the hawks want they can take any one player out the game. Doesn't make him gutless.
