Buzz: Rams making a run at Alterraun Verner?

Right now the Jets are perceived as one of the teams with an inside track of Titans CB Alterraun Verner, but now that Rodger Saffold has made his intentions clear to sign somewhere else, are the Rams about to get into the market for Verner?

Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com writes that Verner is a legitimate possibility for the Rams.

… should Saffold depart, his money could be funneled somewhere else. That somewhere else could be spent on one of the league’s top available defensive backs.

Headlining that list is Tennessee cornerback Alterraun Verner. League sources have confirmed that the Rams’ interest in Verner is very real and with Saffold out of the picture, the Rams can probably find a way to work him on to the pay roll.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Verner would be familiar with Rams coach Jeff Fisher, since the corner played for Fisher in Tennessee.  Could the availability of the Rams money coupled with familiarity with Coach Fisher make the difference for Verner?

And why was the best player and biggest contributor cut first. I wanna throw this holmes jersey out already and see Sanchez goneeee and I would love Harris to be cut to.Dont understand this b/s

People here need to calm down. You have no faith in what this team can do. All because the Rams show interest in the same player that the Jets do you assume that they will pick the Rams over the Jets? Could he, yeah. But you all are acting like it's a guarantee that he does. Just calm down and wait for it to play out

what I tell u, well be having fun watching kyle Wilson get burnt next year or champs old ass getting burnt. That's why you don't close negotiations with a 29 yr old corner who can still play, wow he was injured and it affected his play last year its football its gonna happen. Hes 29 turning 30 not 39 not turning 40, his hip would had been fine. We shouldn't devalue the safety position and we should do whatever we can for Whitner.

Bent,

Breno Giacomini was acquired by the Seahawks from Green Bay's practice squad in 2010 when Idzik was in the Seahawks' front office.  Is he a potential Howard replacement?

@Kirk Michael  This stuff isn't exactly rocket science.

Cro knew he was going to be cut. The team likely approached him about a paycut. Cro said no (which is his right). The team said bye. Cro took it like a professional and here we are.

It's weird when fans get hard feelings even though the players don't.

Brendan
Brendan

@Kirk Michael  There's no rush to cut any of them. See if you can trade them first.

@Kirk Michael  Cromartie priced himself off this team, not the other way around man.

ASAP, then go after a corner that can play after we lose verner.

@Brendan  I think he's talking about Cro, who the Jets can always re sign with a restructured deal to gain more cap space

@a57se If you actually looked into it instead of writing off the idea entirely because of where it came from, you'd see it's not a terrible hypothetical.

You're acting like the guy we presently hope is re-signed to play RT was lighting the world on fire before the Jets signed him off a PS.

@a57se @SackDance99  Don't think there's that much difference between them to be honest.  Giacomini's more of a zone blocker though.

Don't really want to talk about replacements at the moment.  Hoping this gets done.  If not, there's certainly more options out there than there were when we were stuck with Hunter.

SackDance99

@Brendan @SackDance99He had 3 false starts against the Giants...maybe they took him out as that game was a blow out and his replacement got rung up?  Also, 2 of the PFR penalties were in the post-season, so maybe PFF didn't count them?

Brendan
Brendan

@SackDance99 I'm also interested why PFF and PFR count penalties differently. I trust PFF adjusts their penalty stats based on what they see as the culprit, not who the refs peg (since they're wrong sometimes).

Does PFR just take the ref's call? What else could be the reason for a 3-penalty spread for Breno?

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Brendan @a57seHey, he's right, I should've read his comments like in Bible study and found that he did say 4 false starts (dumb) and 4 holding penalties...but, given the fact that he was injured, I think his full healthy season in 2012 might be a better indication.  As for a "finesse" guy; he has the reputation that's opposite.

SackDance99

@Brendan @SackDance99Never checked the FO stats before...can't get better than no. 1.  I really brought him up because the idea that it's "Howard or the sky will fall" is just loony.  There are plenty of guys that could step in and either play as well as Howard or exceed his production.  Like you, I want Howard back, but a guy like Giacomini is more than an adequate replacement.

@SackDance99 This guy should hire you as an agent. You're doing a helluva job selling me.

@a57se These one-line factless replies do nothing to improve your standing in a discussion, 57. That's what "show your work" is about. You say things, then just abandon the thread when the discussion gets into the details.

SackDance99

@Brendan @SackDance99After reading up on him, he's sort of a classic late bloomer.  Drafted by the Pack more for potential because of his big body and athleticism.  Brazilian kid from Malden, MA...meaning he's likely a tough SOB.

Brendan
Brendan

@SackDance99 If I had to guess this is the type of player that Idzik would keep tabs on. Everyone can't be above average.

It's an intriguing name to add to the mix, for sure, but I think we all hope for continuity's sake that Howard is resigned on a reasonable deal.

@SackDance99 @Brendan @a57se  Breno's listed weight is all over the place, from 303 to 318.  He's slightly smaller and more agile than Howard though.

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Brendan @a57seActually, Howard and Giacomini have similar pedigrees...guys who were TEs who got converted to OL and are huge 6-7, 320 lbs plus.  Both don't bend all that well as run blockers, but are good pass blockers.  And, Giacomini's known to be a world class aggressive a-hole on the field, an animal who loves to earhole LBs and DBs in zone blocks.  He'd lend a different attitude to the offense.

SackDance99
SackDance99

@a57se @BrendanWhere's your proof that he was the "weak link" on the Seahawks' OL?  And, what were the 8 flags for?  Holding calls are the only ones that could support your thesis of weakness.  There are others, like hands to the face, going downfield on passes or unsportsmanlike conduct that would show aggression...not bad for an OL.  Some could be false starts, which would be dumb, but not indicative of weakness.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Haha, you are the best.

Howard's grade was -10.2 for run blocking. That was 68th out of 76 ranked tackles last year. Dismiss it all you want so you can continue a predetermined narrative, but your point about run blocking whiffs entirely since Breno was 37th.

Howard was much better in 2012. So, emphatically stating one way or the other is not based in the realm of fact.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

No this is the point where you should go find someone else to argue with.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se This is where I should probably point out that Howard's run grade was not good last year.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

Howard is a decent player....Giacomini is a decent player who commits too many penalties.

I don't want a finesse O'line and Giacomini is a finesse player. He was the weak link in Seattles' run game. They know what they are doing in letting this guy go.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se The point is, it may not be detrimental to the team. Howard wasn't elite last year, he's promising. There's a huge difference there.

a57se
a57se

@SackDance99 @Brendan

I wasn't trying to insult you, sorry if it came off that way.....I could picture Idzik bringing in 'HIS' guys to the detriment of the team and it is that idea I was commenting about.

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Brendan Yeah, Giacomini was the RT in the NFL's best run offense.  So, he's a downgrade?  Plus, my point was whether Idzik may like him or not...that's why the word "potential" was used.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Strange. Those two aren't the same, but they've got Mangold right. They have Brick with different # of penalties also.

Either way, Breno gets flagged more, but acting like that automatically equates to "worse player" isn't right. By that logic, Colon is worse than Winters.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Can you provide the link to whatever database you're using? Like I said, PFF has both men lower than what you listed above.

And yes, singling out one thing that Breno did worse than Howard is cherry-picking, that's the definition of that phrase, actually.

To reiterate, I want Howard, but dismissing SD's idea like that is bush league.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @a57se

Cherry picking???

the guy was flagged 8 friggin times....that is not cherry picking.....that is a physically overmatched finesse player.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se Now you're cherry-picking things to focus on.

Howard had a lower PFF grade, shall we act like that tells the whole story, too?

I also have no idea where you pulled those #'s from, PFF has Breno with 5 flags and Howard with 2.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan

The guy was flagged 8 times last season...4 holding and 4 false starts...Howard was flagged once each for Holding, false start and ineligible downfield.

We don't need a penalty machine.

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Bent @SackDance99@a57seThat might make sense.  Then, Mangold would have to worry less about his backside and could concentrate more on play side (assuming a traditional strong right base set).  Thing is, RGs are usually maulers and that doesn't describe Winters....

Bent
Bent moderator

@SackDance99 @Bent @a57se  Oddly enough there were some suggestions that Winters would move to the right if they got Asamoah or Beadles.

Bent
Bent moderator

@SackDance99 @Bent @a57se  More, yes, but not exclusively.  Maybe they would transition more in that direction if the personnel suited it.

SackDance99
SackDance99

@Bent @a57se@SackDance99Don't the Jets run more zone blocking with MM and wasn't Howard first used in Sparano's more drive blocking offense?  So, might Breno be a better fit for the "running WCO" that Seattle runs and the Jets covet?
