Clearly Rex Ryan is already taking a more hands-on approach this year.
As Connor Orr from the Star Ledger writes Ryan was at SMU today to personally work out the 6-8, 277-pounder Margus Hunt:
As The Star-Ledger reported last week, the Jets have significant interest in the defensive end. At the conclusion of his workout, though, Hunt said he was surprised Ryan worked him out as an outside linebacker … However, this isn’t out of the ordinary for Ryan. When the Jets were after Quinton Coples last year, Ryan went down to North Carolina’s Pro Day and worked Coples out as an OLB as well as a defensive end, where he ended up playing in 2012.
Hunt recorded eight sacks last season and blocked 17 kicks during his career. Based on current projections, he might be a guy the Jets would consider taking with their second round pick. They reportedly have an upcoming visit scheduled.
It’s a busy couple of days for the Jets staff – Yesterday, GM John Idzik was at North Carolina, DC Dennis Thurman was at Texas and OL Coach Mike Devlin was at Louisiana Tech. DL coach Karl Dunbar was at LSU today, while QB coach David Lee was at USC.
